Boy's Cross Country We went into the 1977 Cross-Country season fully expecting to win the State Class C Championship. Juniors Dean Dellwo and Wes Rammell and sophomores Bob Baier, Curt Hoehn, and Jay Rammell, all returned from our 1976 State Class B runner-up team so we knew we had a young but very strong group. In addition to that group, were three inexperi- enced but strong freshmen in Randy Frye, Mike Haines and Mitch Baretta. We had several good meets with local A , B , and C teams and showed rapid and steady improve- ment throughout the season. By mid-October, gritty Bob Baier had established himself as our number one runner and also a contender for the state crown. Our peak was reached two weeks before the state meet when we trounced class A Poison, Ronan and Bigfork, and class B Frenchtown to win the first place trophy at the Poison Invitational. Bob Baier ran a tremendous duel with Bigfork's Mark Thompson that day, finally beating the premier Class A runner by 25 yards for the first place ribbon. But then disaster struck as first Dean Dellwo and, at the last moment, Wes Rammell, became seriously ill with the mumps. Without our number two and three runners, the young Blackhawks were obviously out of the running for the State Title. Wes was unable to make the trip at all and Dean got out of the sickbed in time to go to Great Falls and make a courageous effort, but was unable to finish the race. Super Sophomore Bob Baier did his thing and finished fifth out of 128 runners while Curt Hoehn came up with yet another courageous effort and finished 45th even though his glands were already swollen with the mumps. Randy Frye, a long-legged freshman with tremendous endurance, finished 50th in his very first State Meet. The young Blackhawk's scoring was completed with fine efforts by diminative Jay Rammell and Mike Haines, two tiny but tough runners who had amazed area coaches all season by often soundly beating athletes a foot taller than they were. 12 T S’ The combined score of the three sophomores and two freshmen was still good enough to place the Blackhawks ninth out of 22 teams. Further evidence of what might have been was when Noxon placed a solid third in the meet for we had beaten the Red Devils three times during the regular season. . . Thus, after our hundreds of grueling miles of training we were very demoralized by the outcome of the 1977 season but luckily we had no seniors on the team and we will all return to continue our quest for the State Title in 1978. The 1977 football season was a season of many changes. Seeley-Swan High School was reclassified to Class C , had a new conference and was introduced to eight man foot- ball. The team was young with the sophomore class providing most die manpower, but despite their youth they had come to play football. The first game was against highly ranked Superior. The young Blackhawks trailed only 14-6 at half but the team's youth and inexperience proved fatal as the Hawks lost 42-6. The second game was non- conference with Arlee. Both teams played well and it went down to the wire. Trailing 14-12 Seeley-Swan took the ball to the 4 yardline with forty-five seconds left. A Not Pictured: Gretchen Foote Football ’77 fumble on the next play ended the drive and Arlee went home the victors. Three days later the Hawks hosted St. Regis. With the running of Tom Walker the Hawks had little trouble while subduing the Tigers 42-20. The fourth game was a disaster before it started. The team made it to the field ten minutes before the game, due to a myriad of delays. The Blackhawks played with worst game that day and fell 32-8. The fifth game was non-conference against the State Champion Charlo Vikings. As the players were announced to the spectators, it was obvious Charlo had much more experience starting eight seniors to S.S.H.S. 's one senior, two juniors and five sophomores. The Hawks were game with Bob Farra playing his most inspired game but experience usually wins over youth and Charlo won 40-0. Seeley Swan then went to Victor. The game was hard fought but under the leader- ship of Mike Bolam and 55 yd. touchdown jaunt by Jim Teafoe in the waning minutes the Hawks won 33-26. Then one of the four horsemen (disease) fell upon the Hawks. An epidemic of mumps decimated the team and the Blackhawks could soar no more and they subsequently lost to Drummond 27-0 and Florence 46-0. The football wars were over. The Hawks had learned much from that season and they knew that the next season the team would rally gain to fight another day, older, stronger and more experienced. at l; - -X- c - w’ tM-’if”icm .,______ _____ Ma« , Sophomores Susan Davis Bob Baier Richard Benham Kelly Best Tom Brechbill Duane Brumfield Loni Clevenger Ricky Crosby David Dailey Ma rki Doucett Mark Hrickson Stuart Hschenbachei Class Of “80” Gary Freyholtz Geoff Foote David Friede Kevin Frye Debbie Guizzo Penny Hamilton Glenda Hawkins Cindy Hillstead Curt Hoehn Tim Hulett Harry Johnson Steve Johnson Teresa Johnson Dawn Lemons Cheryl Miller Bob Montgomery Dora Morris Toni Nash Shelley Nicholson Lesley Pagett Jaylund Rammell Jeri Tanner Roberta Underwood Dora Vogelsong Debbie Walker Wanda Weaver Kenny Wood i II I UiM wM Front Row Left to Right: Mary Halglen, CindyJjWilLstiadirfheresa foellwo.-jatkie Jungeri, MarilenelFaWar, Cindy McCaffrey,14Celly Btelke ;, Dencie Hoflbpn. A good beginning leads to good tilings. In the fall every musician starts out slow and methodical. Our musical year started with 20 students, 4 being boys in chorus. Our 15 high school band members were the nucleus of the band, and 12, 7th and 8th graders brought the total number up to 27. The big surprise was our beginning high school band with 12 enthusiastic beginning musicians. Later in the year the beginning band members helped us out by playing with the High School Band at the District Music Festival, and the combined bands brought back a well deserved strong II rating. The highlights of the Blackhawks Musical Year were: Nov. 21-22 -Thompson Falls Music Festival attended by Geoff Foote, Cheryl Miller, Dora Morris and John Sterling in the Band, and Kelly Best, Theresa Dellwo, Brenda Farra, Crete hen Foote, Debbie Hansen, and Toni Nash in the Chorus. I suppose that being de- fending State Champions could be an enviable situation. However, with the loss of fine tough Seniors, we knew we were in for some difficult times. We were short two weight classes all season. The low point came when we were smeared by Plains. The high point came with our taking fourth place at the Rocky Mountain Classic in Missoula. We had hopes all season of winning the Divi- sional. However, when Jay and Wes Rammell both went out of the lineup because of illness, our Divisional hopes faded and died. Several wrestlers did an outstanding job. Malcolm Kesterson had a 29-1 record. He was champ at the Stevens- ville Tourney, the Rocky Mountain Classic, the Divi- sional and State Tournaments. Twenty-eight of this twenty- nine wins were by fall. Twenty-five coming in the first period. Jeff Tanner had a 29-1 season. His only loss coming in the finals of the Classic. Jeff won the Mission Tourney, the Stevens- ville Tourney, was runner up in Missoula and took first at both the Divisional and State Tournaments. Wayne Cahoon won the Stevensville Tourney, was runner up at the Classic, runner up at Divisional, and third at State. Curtis Gehrke had a fairly good season. He placed at the Mission and Stevensville Tournaments, at the Classic and Divisional. We had a good turn out of Freshmen. Also, several Sophomores joined our ranks. Most of our boys worked hard and show real promise. We can see an outstanding team in the making for next year. Mr. Anderson worked hard on the mat all season and contributed greatly to the success of the team mem- bers. 36 ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ im 8S H't IB 7 - e v % C (a) Mr. Douglas Vagg, Mathamatics. Though young the team was very scrappy and dependable as they had excellent attend- ance at practices and meets and steadily improved throughout the season. The weather was very cold, wet, and windy this spring and constantly hampered the efforts of the hard-working young athletes. The young Blackhawks reached their peak at the right time when on May 13th they won the District 12-C Track Championship in Missoula. It was the first championship and the first trophy ever won in Boys’ Track at Seeley-Swan High School. The Western Division Class C Track Meet at Bozeman on May 17th was a nightmare that none of us will ever forget. A pouring, wind-driven rain coupled with very poor management of the meet caused the Blackhawks to freeze, suffer, slip and slide from 9:00 A. M. to 9:30 P. M. when our bus got stuck in the mud for an hour before being pulled out by a wrecker. We finally had supper at 11:00 P.M. but were very disappointed as one by one we had all been eliminated in the freezing rain with the exception of senior captain Bob Farra who qualified for state in the High Hurdles and the Pole Vault. Bob went on to win a Black Letter by placing third in the High Hurdles at the State Track Meet and by tieing for second in the Pole Vault. Obviously, with such a young team this year we are looking forward to having a very strong team next year. We have finally won that elusive trophy that we pursued for years, and now we’re going after some more. 5 ‘ Mt' «• : ' • • • «t «■ 4 4 ; -a ■ • • «• 4 : Seeley’s Fleetfoot Farra Senior Bob Farra, Captain Ht. 5’8 Wt. 155 lbs.
