Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1977 volume:

m SUMMONS Keep me from going to sleep too soon Or if I go to sleep too soon Come wake me up. Come any hour Of night. Come whistling up the road. Stomp on the porch. Bang on the door. Make me get out of bed and come And let you in and light a light. Tell me the northern lights are on And make me look. Or tell me clouds Are doing something to the moon They never did before, and show me. See that I see. Talk to me till I'm half as wide awake as you And start to dress wondering why I ever went to bed at all. Tell me the walking is superb. Not only tell me but persuade me. You know I'm not too hard persuaded. -Robert Francis LEGACY The year has made her will: she left to me A private purse: Silver and copper from the dogwood tree, White gold from a torrent, amber from a pond And, for my sadness1 sake. Mountains in a bluescape of beyond. It might be worse: These will be useful when I lie awake. -Christopher Morley 4 DREAMS Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow. Langston Hughes 'inflETHpi DONE TOO SOON And each one there Had this to share They had sweated beneath the same sun Looked up in wonder at the same moon And wept when it was over For being done too soon For being done too soon. • • FOOTBALL 77 The 1976 Football Season began with high hopes and great expectations. Proba- bly the best crop of Senior Athletes were finished their last year with hopes of win- ning season. However, the best laid plans of mice and men sometimes go astray as after the Blackhawks 24-6 Boulder, in- juries took their toll. The Blackhawks were from the smallest B school in the state and when someone got hurt there was no one with enough experience to replace him effectively. During the first half of the second game at Plains, three of the front five offensive line were injured with freak injuries and Blackhawks prospects began to fall. It was a tribute to the team, that after the injuries, the desire to play still remained throughout the rest of the season. The team will always miss the talents of Ron Matthew, Jeff Swenson, Rollie Matthew, Wally Remick, Kevin Kratzer, Wendell Weaver and Gerry Wood. . v. front Row-be ft to. Considered a rebuilding year, the girls promptly earned the respect of coaches, opponents, and fans. At the Divisional Tournament, the girls won their first game against Drum- mond, before falling to a powerful Phillipsburg team. The girls defeated Flo- rence in the third game. Playing for third and fourth place honors, the girls lost an exciting overtime game to the Corvallis Blue Devils. BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY The boys' cross-country team had an exceptional season in that we had a very young team with only one experienced runner and yet managed to take sec- ond at state. Though our rivals to the north, two-time and defending state champions Bigfork, beat us five times dur- mg the season the youthful Blackhawks showed steady and rapid improvement and beat the Vikings at state This united and inspired effort was good enough to capture the second place trophy for Seely-Swan in spite' of the fact that we had two sophomore and three Freshmen on our seven man team. Those athletes making points at state and thus winning a black letter were Dean Dellwo Don Guizzo Bob Baier, Wes Rammell, Carlin Rammell, and Jaylund Rammell. 18 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY The girls Cross-Country team completed the 1976 season by placing fourth at the State Cross Meet in Helena, October 30th, The girls who competed for Seeley-Swan were seniors Cheryl Gobert and Joan Lester, who placed 11th for an individual award; and freshmen Dora Morris and Lesley Pagett. Special recognition goes to Cheryl Gobert and Dora Morris for consistantly working hard during the long hours of training and for their cheerful co-operation for the entire season. It started with twenty-five band members who struggled to play well at football games as well as girl's basketball games. The chorus of about eighteen voices with over half freshmen were stretching their vocal cords with hopes of singing well for the Christmas Concert. The Christmas Concert past with a good feeling of a job well done. The Boys basketball and wrestling season had the pep band hopping to play often and when the pep band season was finally over, we had played for thirty-two games. Our next concert was our Spring Concert and all the soloists and ensembles for the District Music Festival performed. The twenty-five piece band, which didn't grow much in size but definitely in quality received a II (Excellent rating) for an overall rating at the District Music Festival and a I (Superior) rating for sight reading. The Chorus re- ceived an overall rating of I. The small ensembles and soloists did well at the Dis- trict Festival. We received one III (Good rating), five II's (Excellent ratings) and five I's (Superior ratings). The triple-trio of nine girls sang Let There Be Music at the State Music Festival and recieved a I rating; also Lesley Pagett played a piano solo, Bagetelle No. 1 and received a I rating at State. Our final concert, a Pop Concert which involves pop- ular music, ended the year with beautiful sounds that showed the progress of and musicianship of all the S.S.H.S. musicians. The season looked promising from the outset as we had five good tough Senior in the line-up, and a good determined young wrestlers in each of the other seven weight classes. We began the season in November by winning the Mission Tournament and Duals with Bigfork, Darby and Florence. In early December we won over Chester and Fairfield in a double dual. The following day we won the Fairfield tournament with eight schools competing. We had our first set back of the season here. AsWendel Weaver injuried a knee and was sidelined for a month. As the month of December progressed, we won duals with Thompson Falls. Mission and Carvallis. In January we won duals with the Religate J.V., Frenchtown and Plains. During the Plains match Wally Remick injuried a knee which was to keep him out of action for a few weeks. During the following weeks workout Bert Mecham pulled a muscle and we went into the Stevenville Tournament much the worse for wear. During this tournament Wayne Cahoon, had to drop out of action because of a sprained wrist. How- ever, when the dust had settled at the end of the tournament, with sixteen teams competing we were only 12 point behind the first place team. Then, on January 20, the Japanese Cultural Exchange Team moved in. We I earned a lot from this experience. Mainly that the Blackhawks are no match for the Nation of Japan. They caught us in a mid season slump . . but it didn't make that much difference as they had us outclassed in every way. Jeff Tanner was the only Blackhawks to register a win. This did prove to be an interesting experience for the Community, however. The gym was packed and excitement ran high. We then finished the regular season with a win over AHee and our only loss of the season to Superior. This was a hard loss to take as we would have walked away with it, had we been full stre right. Monday of Divisional week found all varsity members back an the mat. The ffu bug was about whipped and we saw moral rise sharply. Even though Wendell, Wally and Wayne were still some- what hampered by injures we felt as a team, that we were -eady to win the Divisional. We predicted a dogfight right down to the wire between Thompson Falls, Superior, and Selley-Sawn. Little did we know of what was to came. The 1977 Western Divisional Class B-C Taurnament at Darby proved to be the scene of action for the greatest display of wrestling skill ever witnessed n our Division. When the dust had settled from this tournament, the Blackhawks were 90 6 points ahead of the second place team. We brouqht home our 6th Divisional Champ- ship in 11 years. At this point there was no question as to whether or not we would be in contention at State . With seven Divisional Champions, two runner ups, one third place and one fourth place we knew we had a good shot at the big one. Our Divisional Champs were: Curtis Gehrke,Jim Richards, Jeff Tanner, Carlin Rammell, Bert Mecham, Wendell Weaver, and Malcom K ester son. Wes Rammell and Wally Remick placed second, Wayne Cahoon placed third, and Peter Meyer placed fourth. We went into the State Tournament at Havre in fairly good condition physically. Wendell, Wally, and Wayne were not in top form because of the njuries they had sustained during the season, but they all earned valuable points during the action. Mentally we were in.top form. We knew we could win The big one if we made a maximum effort. The first two rounds went well and we were holding a comfortable lead going into the semi finals. We had bad breaks in this round Aje to the pairing set up. We were meeting kids here who we should have met in the finals and as a result we only advanced two wrestlers, Curtis Gehrfce, and Bert Mecham, into the finals Jim Richards, Jeff Tanner, and Carlin Rammell advanced to the consolation finals. Again, when the dust had settled at the end of the T ournament, the Blackhawks were holding the State Championshi p Trophy. It had been an exicting tournament and went right to the wire. We were very proud of our team. Each of the eleven team members scored points and it took them all to win it as we were only two points ahead of Chester and Four and one half points ahead of Big Sandy. Five wrestlers placed: Carlin Rammell, took fourth, Jim Richards and Jeff Tanner took third, Curtis Gehrke second, and Bert Mecham First. Jim Richards, who had been a State Champion for 2 years lost a heart breaker in the semi finals. He lost by 1 point to the 1977 Champion. J im walked off the matt with his head up and took the loss like a man. We were all proud of Jim as the real purpose of our program is to help make men out of boys. Summing it all up, it was a great year. Assistant coaches Anderson and Gillespie, made valuable contributions. Mr. Anderson wrestl ed his heart oU getting the heavy weights in shape. As Bill Mackie put it, For a little guy that Mr. Anderson s pretty tough. Kevin Erickson was a good dependable manager, Debbie Draeger, did a fine job as statastician, and our cheerleaders: Dawn Wood, Tammy Erickson, and LaRae Conley were the best ever. Back Row Ass't Coach Mr. Foust, Head Coach Mr. Baretta, Geoff Foote, Bob Farra, Kenny Wood, Steve Johnson, Tom Walker, Curt Hoehn, David Friede, 56 The track team of 1977 was our strongest team ever. We began our competitive season on March 26th when we followed the snowplow out of town in order to get to Corvallis for our first meet. Led by an excellent group of seniors we made respect- able showings in every meet in which we partici- pated. We ended the season in Billings at the state track meet when we placed 7th out of forty teams. At the state meet in Billings Kevin Kratzer led the team with 5 points with a 3rd place finish in the 100 yard dash, 5th place in the 220 and was part of the relay team which tied the State Class B Record in the 440 Relay. Bert Mecham broke the school record and took second in the State with a 150 ft. throw in the Discus. Bob Farra qualified for the finals in the high hurdles but failed to place due to a little hard luck on the last hurdle. Don Guizzo, Jeff Swenson, Gerry Wood and Kevin Kratzer made up the 440 Relay which finished with a 2nd place at the State Meet. In the divisional meet a week before at Dorn- blazer Staduim in Missoula, the team finished a solid fourth. Kevin Kratzer took 1st in the 100, 3rd in the 220, 5th as a part of the mile relay and 2nd as a part of the 440 relay team adding a total of 10 4 points to the team total. Bob Farra scored 8Yfe points for the team with a 2nd in the pole vault, 4th in the high hurdles and tied for 3rd in the high jump. Gerry Wood scored A points by taking 3rd in the high hurdles, 4th in the lows and being a member on both relays. Bert Mecham won third in the discus while Don Guizzo was part of the relay teams and took 5th place in the 440 yard dash. Jeff Swenson was part of both placing relay teams and sophomore Jim TeaFoe took 5th in the low hurdles.
