The football team achieved many firsts this year for our school: third place in conference play, we beat Darby and Eureka for the first time, and placed four boys on the all-conference first place team. Our defensive unit this year was outstanding. In four games it limited the opponents to six points. In no game this year were we ever completely dominated except for the fourth quarter in the Mission game. All other games were not over until the last play of the game, and our team never quit. 12 OFFENSE FRONT ROW: Steve Curtiss, Jack Rich, Dan Farra, Andy Teague, Don Farra, Willard Hahn, Rod Kessler BACK ROW: Hal Sheets, Dan Hamilton, Bruce Callahan, Rocky Houtchens DEFENSE FRONT ROW: Dan Zebarth, Dave Tompkins, Dan Farra, Don Farra, Willard Hahn, Gar Holmes BACK ROW: Steve Curtiss, Rocky Houtchens, Dan Hamilton, Fred Styler, Rod Kessler Sponsered by MACE'S U-STOP 13 Paula Sponsered by BEEF EATERS DRIVE IN Sponser: SEELEY LAKE MERCANTILE Sponsered by MISSOULA TRUCK SALES Queen: Cindy Ziech Princesses: Gina Mace Terry Engdahl Arlyss Vagg 17 BASKETBALL LEFT TO RIGHT: Rod Kessler, Andy Teague, Steve Curtiss, Jack Rich, Joe Hals, Dick Hoehn, Scott Hart, Stuart Cubulski, Dan Hamilton, Rocky Houtchens, Coaches-Mr. Haines, Mr. Baretta, Mr. Gratton, Cheerleaders-Gina Mace, Cindy Ziech, Cheryl Mackie, Paula Ziech, and Kathy Wilhelm. The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks had a quite successful season overall, losing 10 and winning 10 regular season games before going to the District tournament. They came out in third place at District. They then played their hearts out at Divisional, upsetting Loyola and losing a cliff-hanger to Bigfork, ending up in second place with a berth at State. They lost two tough games games there and were thus eliminated from further competition, but sincere congratulations are due to this spunky team that gave it their very best all season. Next year holds promises of a championship team, with most lettermen returning and sever- al more good players coming up from the B and Frosh ranks. 18 F R E S S H Q M u A A N D Cindy Munter Kathy Gratton Peggy Ashcroft TOP L-R: Bob Crodyy, Wayne Slaght, Bill Thompson, Shain Smith, Ted Sanderson, MIDDLE: Mike Dellwo, Randy Munter, Duane Freyholtz, Mr. Baretta coach, BOTTOM: Cindy Munter Katyh Gratton, Peggy Ashcroft Sponser: MACES SALOON B SQUAD TOP L-R: Kevin Wood, Gorden Murphy, Tom Crispin, Scott Mortimore, Mr. Gratton, MIDDLE: Gary Lease, Jeff Osborn, Russ Kessler, Charles Wood, Less Herbert, LAST: Cindy Nagy, Kris Bergset, Debbie Foley Sponser: FIRST NATIONAL BANK 20 Good Luck From GEILES AND KUESTER INSURANCE Look Mom, I got the Ball!!! The year was highlighted with a victory over Deer Lodge and two wins over Ronan during the Divisional Tournament. All the hard work seemed worthwhile when the team came home with the 3rd place trophey from Divisional. Our Team consisted to girls from all four grades-Senior-Naomi V annoy; Juniors- Stefani McPhee, Cindy Ziech, Cindy Nagy, and Melody Anderson; Sophomores - Cindy Ogden, Kathy Wilhelm, Laura Cahoon, and Mary Hultman; Freshman-Martha Cahoon, Chris Owens, and Cynthia Owens. The managerial duties were handled by two very competent senior, Teny Engdahl and Arlyss Vagg. 25 Seeley Swan Girl's Basketball Record CONFERENCE Anaconda 55 Seeley Swan 40 Seeley Swan 27 Phillipsburg 19 Seeley Swan 53 Alberton 5 Deer Lodge 43 Seeley Swan 28 Seeley Swan 69 Stevensville 16 Seeley Swan 44 Florence 16 Seeley Swan 52 Deer Lodge 44 Seeley Swan 41 Stevensville 16 Anaconda 44 Seeley Swan 24 Seeley Swan 2 Victor 0 (forfeit) Conference Record 7 wins 3 loses Non - Conference 2 wins 2 loses Over all Record 9 wins 5 loses DIVISIONAL TOURNAMENT RECORD 3RD PLACE Seeley Swan 44 Ronan 43 Anaconda 34 Seeley Swan 21 Seeley Swan 39 Phillipsburg 21 Seeley Swan 33 Ronan 32 DIVISIONAL TOURNAMENT HONORS Laura Cahoon 2nd team center NON - CONFERENCE Ronan 45 Seeley Swan 30 Seeley Swan 54 Bigfork 43 Kalispell 43 Seeley Swan 30 Seeley Swan 42 Bigfork 24 7m in Missoulo This page sponsored as a school service Western Montana's Fomily Shopping Center WRESTLING LEFT TO RIGHT: Jerry Ashcroft, Jeff Bennett, David Munter, Dick Lewis, Dennis Lease, Joe Kelly, Mr Mecham, Zane Meyer, Keith Kratzer, Don Farra, Dave Tompkins, Bob Mantei, Mr Gillespie, Warren Gehrke, Greg Foley, Jeff Paterson, Jim Shiner, Mike Richards, Gar Holmes, Lee Skaw, Fred Styler Cheerleaders: Lori Whitcraft, Melody Anderson and Cindy Slayton. Wrestling 1972-1973 Wrestling hit an all time low at Seeley-Swan. The team didn t place at either Divisional or State tournaments. This was the first year since trophies have been given out that we didn't bring home a trophy of some sort. Three wrestlers did make it to the State Tournament, but we failed to place any of them. Warren Gehrke did an outstanding job and lost only to older boys by very close scores. The other two were Dave Tompkins and Fred Styler. The prospects for the 1973-1974 season looks much brighter as several team members are returning who have the ability to develope into top wrestlers. There will also be several outstanding freshman coming up. It looks like hard work and the right kind of luck could put us back on the winning trail. Sponser: BISHOP AGENCY INSURANCE 27 s T A T E W R E S T L E R 5 DAVE TOMPKINS FRED STYLER WARREN GEHRKE 28 G I The fall of 1972 found our girl's cross-country team close to the State title. We captured second place at the State Meet in Helena on an extremely cold and windy day. Not only was the second place trophy rewarding, but so were the medals and seven black letterseamed that day. The girls doing all the work to bring this honor to Seeley- Swan were Captain Terry Engdahl, Mary Hultman, Melody Anderson, Laura Cahoon, Martha Cahoon, Kathy Wilhelm, and Sandra Carlson. Junior Varsity were Cindy Munter, Stefani McPhee, Tacky Darlington, Cindy Ogden, and Cindy Slaton. Hultman placed third for a medal and Terry was fifth for a medal. • Keeping the team going were Cindy Ogden and Stefani McPhee as managers and alternates. Congratulations girls for a job well done. Sponser: U-STOP Lnr-1 B O Y S c R O S s c o u N T R Y Sponser: DELA NY’S Seeley, with only one returning veteran, experienced a disappointing season this year, climaxing the season with a last place finish in the State meet in Helena. However, the future holds many bright promises, as we not only have all members of the team returning, but we also have several outstanding Freshmen runners who will move right up into the Varsity ranks. Joe Hals, who was the sole team member re- turning from last year, ran consistently well against quite heavy favorites from the larger schools, and he will again form the necleus of next year's Blackhawk team. All our cross country boys should be commended for giving it a real effort, and it is anticipated that we will constitute a real threat next year. Our 1972 team consisted of Joe Hals, Les Herbert, John Carlson, Kevin Wood, and Charles Wood. Mike Dellwo (NOT PICTURED) Randy Munter, Wayne Slaght, Shane Smith, and Ron Hamm, All Freshmen this year, will doubtlessly add a real scoring punch to the 1973 team. G I R L S T R A C K GIRL'S TRACK 1st in State The Seeley Swan Girl's Track Team finally accomplished their goal and dream of being first in the State for Class B. This goal was accomplished by four individuals whose points totaled 23 and the awarding of the first place trophy. Those four indi- viduals were Mary Hultman with 1st places in the 100, 220, and 440; Cheryl Mackie with a 5th in the long jump; Stefani McPhee with a 4th in the discuss; and Terry Engdahl with a 4th in the mile. Also participating at the State level were Naomi Vannoy, Cindy Ziech, Cindy Ogden, Laura Cahoon, Chris Owe ns, Cynthia Owens, and Cindy Munter. All eleven girls earning the right to compete at State, places at Divisional where they were second to Ronan. Outstanding performances during the year came from Mary Hultman with life time bests of 10.9 in the 100, and .58 in the 440; and Terry Engdahl's gold medal in the mile at divisional. 34 BOYS TRACK Track Season 1973 The Blackhawks were again a young, inexperienced team in the 1973 season. Though we worked hard and improved rapidly we still were only strong enough to take 4th in the district and 9th in the Division. We did have twenty fine lettermen, however, with only one senior on the squad so we should have a much better season next year. Three men made it to the State Track Meet in Billings: Scott Hart in the high and low hurdles, Steve Curtiss in the Shot Put and Dick Hoehn in the 880 yard run.
