It was started as an initiation for the incoming Freshman, usually at the first of the year. The Freshman dressed up in the manner in which the Seniors desired. They performed in accordance to the '71 Seniors' wishes. We had a Fun Day dance and several games for the Freshman to play. (As you can see by the pictures). It was great fun for the 1970-71 newcomers, and for the Seniors. The Blackhawks of Seeley-Swan won the State Class B title for the second year in a row. With Robert Holmes leading the way the Blackhawks rolled up 83 points to favorite Cut Bank's 97 and Shelby's 111. Manhattan placed 4th with 123. Cross Country running demands a tremendous amount of work from an athlete. As coach, I feel we have seven tremendous boys in Robert Holmes (Jr.), KeUy Hart (Sr. ), John Lapka (Sr. ), Sandy Hultman (Jr. ), Kirk Mace (Jr. ), John Mecham (Soph. ), and Leland Skaw (Soph. ). Robert Holmes, because of his high place finishes in 5 meets, was designated captain for 1970. With five boys back and some promising freshmen from this year, we plan to be right in the middle of things next year in the state meet. Sponsor: R. H. SEASON ’70 IN REVIEW Last October, the girl's cross country team captured second place in the B-C Western Divisional Championships held at Seeley Lake. The team included: captain Terry Engdahl, Judi Trickey, Melody Anderson, Annette Bertelson, Cindy Zeich, Stefani McPhee, Nicki Hoehn, and Cheryl Mackie. The girls were coached by Mrs. Baylis and Mr. Haines. In addition to the trophy, Terry Engdahl and Judi Trickey received black letters. Throughout the season, the girls did well. FOOTBALL SEASON-1970 This past season, the Blackhawks showed much improvement and more enthusiasm on the football field. Although the season record ended at two wins and five losses over-all and one win and four losses in confer- ence play, there were several bright moments. The first was a 24-0 win over Big Fork, who had never been beaten by Seeley-Swan, and an 8-0 win over Plains. In the final game of the season, Divisional champions, Mission Bulldogs were nearly upset by the Blackhawks as they squeeked by in an 0-8 battle. For their efforts, the seven following members of the Blackhawk's football team received recognition in District play. The football cheerleaders started out with three new recruits this year: Debbie Sheets, Judy Wilhelm, and Mary Done. Teresa Garland and Nicki McPhee enjoyed a year of being the old pros as both girls were on last year's squad. Cheering for the football team was quite an exhilarating experience. The girls got along and worked well together, as they became weathered with the sport. Putting a pep rally together for Homecoming was a lot of fun for them and their audience. Through rain, snow, wind, heat, and cold, they cheered the boys on, and backed them 100% of the way. Sponsor: 1ST NATIONAL BANK of Missoula HOMECOMING Sponsor: BEDFORD EQUIPMENT CO. Pagett and Company , a special select singing group made up of 14 girls, was started last fall under the direction of Mr. Pagett, with Mrs. George Hart as accompanist. The girls chose black A-line dresses with full sleeves and silver trim as their outfits, and Mrs. William Gehrke Jr. graciously took on the job of making all of them. Thanks again!! After much preparation and hard work, they made their debut at the November meeting of P. T.O., closing with the theme song, California Dreamin' . Practice continued, this time in a Christmas mood in preparation for the Home Demonstration Club Christmas dinner and the grade school Christmas program. Barbara Copenhaver and her guitar, along with a special arrangement of the School Song, made singing for the District Basketball Tournament in Hamilton a highly successful and fun performance. After the basketball season came to a close, work on selections for the District Music Festival was undertaken. Participation in the District Music Festival was another first for the girls of Seeley-Swan, and receiving a superior rating at Ronan caused quite a sensation on the home front. This milestone led to participation in the State Music Festival at Great Falls. Repeating their performance of district, the girls brought home another superior rating and earned their places in the black letterman's club. Next year's group has a tough reputation to uphold and a great deal of work to undertake. top to bottom; left to right: Barbara Copenhaver, Peggy Ashcroft, Jo Ann Turner, Gregg Foley, Beth Busch, Mike Richards, Debbie Sheets, Arlyss Vagg, Gary Turner, Mary Anders, Linda Brechbill, Mr. Vagg, director, Joyce Brechbill, Tammie Ogden, Lisa Hautzinger, Stacey Wentworth, Mr. Pagett, asst, director, Stefani McPhee, John Carlson, Janet Matthew, Carol Kauffman, Cindy Ogden. PEP BAND The Blackhawk Band, organized primarily as a pep band for school activities, had a busy and successful year. They performed at all home football games, all home basketball games, several home wrestling meets and the District Basketball Tournament at Hamilton. They also played at several pep rallies in the school. They concluded the year by playing for commencement exercises. Sponsor: MI SSOULA COMMUNITY HOSPITAL DIVISIONAL WRESTLING CHAMPS— THIS MAKES 5 YEARS IN A ROW! The 1970-71 wrestling season proved to be rewarding, yet frustrating. The team showed real promise early in the season, by drubbing Ronan and by coming within one match of State Champion Cutbank. We went on to beat all comers and by mid-season were regarded by many as the team to beat. At this point, we had men in all 12 weight classes, and it looked favorable for a peak year. About mid season, however, there began a plague of injury and illness. It soon became obvious that we had lost the power that we had shown earlier. We hit our lowest ebb late in January when we lost to both Ronan and Poison. At this time Meyers was in bed with measles, Morris was out with an elbow injury, Melvin Cahoon was out permanently with a knee injury and several other Blackhawks were ailing. With three big tournaments only days away the prospects looked gloomy. We won the Ronan B and C Tourney by a slim 2 points with Ronan crowding us right to the finish. Allen Anderson and John Mecham were our only first place winners compared to 7 from Ronan. The only real high light of the Ronan tourney was when John Mecham pinned his 4 opponents with no points scored against him and won the outstanding wres- tler's trophy. We went into the Divisional ABC tourney at Libby as underdogs to Ronan as everyone was out to keep the Hawks from winning their 5th straight Divisional Championship. When the dust had.settled, however, we led the B-C pack by 4 points to retain the championship. Mecham finished in first place while Meyers, Lapka, and Anderson finished second. Johnson, Mace, Morris, and Murphy all placed fourth. The high lights of this tournament were when Anderson and Lapka defeated Anaconda in the semi finals, when Johnson, Mace, Meyers, and Murphy fired up and really came through with badly needed points in the wrestle back, and when John Mecham pinned Hager from Anaconda to win his Divisional Championship. We took eight men to State and still had a chance to come in second place behind Cutbank. We lacked the drive to do this, however, and the only high light of the State meet was when John Mecham became Seeley-Swan's first State Wrestling Champion. The team finished 4th behind Cutbank, Ronan, and Baker. This was our lowest in 4 years. None of the girls had ever cheered for Varsity Basketball and they learned early in the season that it took a lot of work to get a good squad. They worked hard at being original in their cheers, and tournament uniforms, and were behind the team 100% at all times, as were all the cheering squads. The B and Freshman cheering squads did a lot of hard work this year. They worked diligently at the concession stand, and helped the A-squad earn money to pay their way to tourna- ments. We had some very good individual performances, but as a team we could only muster enough points for fourth place at District and seventh place at Divisional. Twenty-six boys reported for track. Of these, nine made it to District: Dave Neal, Kelly Hart, Robert Holmes, Kirk Mace, Sandy Hultman, Pat Hamilton, Dan Hamilton, Scott Hart, and John Mecham. We had five boys qualify for State from Divisional: Pat Hamilton, John Mecham, Kirk Mace, Robert Holmes, and Dave Neal. Dave placed fourth in the pole vault in State. We broke several records during the year, mostly by underclassmen, so with a little work and determin- ation we could be right at the top next year. Records were broken as follows: Scott Hart.........high hurdles Pat Hamilton.......100 yd. dash 220 yd. dash low hurdles long jump Robert Holmes......2 mile Dave Neal..........triple jump tied record in pole vault top to bottom; left to right: Kirk Mace, Andy Teague, Dave Neal, Joe Hals, Robert Holmes, John Lease, Mr. Gratton, coach, Les Herbert, Jack Rich, Scott Hart, Dan Hamilton, Bill Baier, Dave Tompkins, Mike Richards, Don Farra, John Mecham, Sandy Hultman, Kelly Hart. This got our team off to a rousing start and a hope- ful season. Our season was successful, but there were disappointing days for all the gals. We were District 8-B champs with the following girls being eligible for Divisional: Charlotte Hambley, Lois Seaman, Jean Matthew, Stefani MePhee, Annette Bertelson, Nicki MePhee, Terry Engdahl, Melody Anderson, Judy Trickey, Cherri Smith, Cheryl Mackie, and Cindy Zeich. These girls then be- came Divisional B-C champs at Kalispell with the following earning the right to participate at the State meet in Missoula: Charlotte Hambley, Lois Seaman, Annette Bertelson, Melody Anderson, Judy Trickey, Cherri Smith, Cheryl Mackie, and Cindy Zeich. At State we tied for third with Valier. Taking medals at state were: Charlotte Hambley- 2nd discus; 4th, shot put; Judy Trickey-3rd, 440 yd. dash; Cheryl Mackie-4th, long jump; 880 yd. pursuitmedley relay, 4th; 440 yd. relay, 4th. The relays were made up of Judy Trickey, Cherri Smith, Cheryl Mackie, and Cindy Zeich. Track did not end after the State meet as the girls continued to work out for the summer AAU meets. The following girls became eligible for the Regional Junior Olympics in Bismark, North Dakota this past summer: Judy Trickey, Cheryl Mackie, Annette Bertelson, Mary Hultman, Cindy Zeich, and Cherri Smith. They earned this right by placing 1,2, or 3 in the Junior Olympics meet in Kalispell and if they place 1,2, or 3 in North Dakota, they will participate at the National Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, Colorado. top to bottom; left to right: Mr. Haines, coach, Nicki MePhee, Annette Bertelsen, Lois Seaman, Jean Matthew Charlotte Hambley, Mrs. Baylis, coach, Stefani MePhee, Coaches and Captains Colleen Murphy, Niki Hoehn, Cherri Smith, Janet Matthew, Cindy Ziech, Terry Engdahl, Cheryl Mackie, CTn.rr noi.r Judy Trickey, Barbara Moody, Melody Anderson.
