Some were unfamiliar ones, those that drift past us; the ones we never really knew. But the others, the familiar ones, stay within our minds and hearts. When we entered the high school, we were inexperi- enced freshmen, but we did have a guiding light. Mrs. Horton was that light. She steered us through our first year of high school and stayed with us for the next three years. A ‘‘Thank You” is too simple and does not convey what we feel. So we, The class of 1989 dedicate our yearbook to you; Mrs. Linda Horton. We leave from here with memories of you helping us build our future. Thank you. Mrs. Linda M. Horton Mrs. Linda Horton: Math Teacher, Computer Sci- ence Teacher, Senior Class Advisor, Math League Advisor: Thank you IN APPRECIATION Mr. Gravel After the departure of Mr. Gravel, it seemed as if the handling of our class was Mrs. Horton’s. We were lucky to have Mr. Hartley to fill his shoes. Though it is not easy Senor has helped greatly; giving us guidance and help through our senior year. Not only is he great as an advisor, he is also a superb teacher. He has won the Spanish Teacher of the Year award and a free trip to Spain. He has a mixture of intelligent guidance, fantastic teaching and a terrific sense of humor. We were very lucky to have him help us. And so we thank you Mr. Robert Hartley. Along with Mrs. Horton, we have had other teachers that have helped us along. We cannot forget anyone who helped her or us. Mr. John Gravel also met us in our freshman year. He brought ideas to our class and was always willing to help. Unfortunately, Mr. Gravel left us at the end of our junior year. Though he did leave, he stayed with us in spirit. We take the time now to thank him for the help he gave us. Thank you, Mr. Gravel. Sr. Hartley THE SUPERINTENDENT’S BREAKFAST On November 30, all Captains, Student Council and Honor Society members met in the library for an informal breakfast with the new Superintendent, Mr. McLaughlin. While enjoy- ing a light breakfast of drinks and pastries, students were given a chance to get better acquainted with Mr. McLaugh: lin. Issues that bothered the students were discussed; such as smoking in the lavs and the possible discontinuation of the traditional Spirit Week. The breakfast was a success and everyone left the library with a good feeling about the upcom- ing year. Larry O’Connell Kara Stutz Tammy Bray FOUR When our FRESHMEN YEAR began, we looked forward to four years in a new school. It was so much bigger and better than the Junior High! Breaks between periods were longer ... we could go to our lockers at any time... slushes and fries .. . no more filing out of the cafeteria... and everyone felt better about new freedom. After a few weeks, that changed quickly as we found out who freshmen really were. We were suddenly “‘imma- ture’ again, when just a year ago we were the most ma- ture ... the oldest members of our school. We found that we had to wait a few years before we could excel in athletics. Most of all, we had to put up with abuse from upperclassmen. It took adjustments, but we all survived. As the year passed, we took part in our first class activities. The towel sale was a great success ... and of course, Kristen Hicks represented our class in the court as our first Homecoming Queen. Spirit Week? Well, maybe next year. We knew that everything would work out better for us in the years to come. In June, we realized that we had to somehow remember everything we'd learned over the past year for final ex- ams. When the last final was over, we all celebrated the coming of summer and the end of our toughest year while we looked forward to the promising future. y When we finally became SOPHOMORES, we made sure that the freshmen felt just as comfortable, as we did the previous year. A bit of pressure was gone, and we looked forward to being ‘‘mature”’ again. In the fall, we found more success in sports and some of us even made varsity teams. Diana Carey took over as our class representative in the Homecoming Court, and our float was voted the best. In October, the Red Sox went for their first championship in 68 years and in the true tradi- tion, gave it away in game six. Our Class President, Dana Tremblay, and the other officers organized our first class dance ... the semiformal. It was a great success and a preview for the next year’s prom. Spirit Week? Well, just wait until next year. As our sophomore year came to a close, we started thinking about the future. We had to raise money and start organizing our Junior Prom. We were excited about our Junior Year and finally being ‘““Upperclassmen.”’ Finally, we were SENIORS. The year was filled with responsibility. We had to choose colleges, fill out applica- tions, take the S.A.T.’s (sometimes again and again), and do our very best work in high school. A lot of us were team captains as well, and leaders. The year was filled with landmarks ... smoke bombs ... pumpkins... fires. ..mew school records... and first ever tie with D.R. at Thanksgiving. We picked Keri John- son as our Homecoming Queen, and we won Spirit Week by an impressive margin. We put four years of memories into our best yearbook yet. We still had a lot more to come with word from colleges, our hard-earned Senior Prom, and of course, graduation. Some of our friends in high school would be with us for the rest of our lives, some we would never see again. Some of us would go on to college, others to a new job. Most of us would not forget our four years in Seekonk High School, four of the most important years of our lives. In our JUNIOR year, we were relaxed and comfortable, in school. We didn’t have the problems of being under- classmen and we didn’t have the responsibility of being seniors. We took PSAT’s and a lot of that changed as we got buried by mail from colleges. It made us feel important but it reminded us that college wasn’t that far away. We chose Jodie Humphrey to represent us for Home- coming and we had the best float for the second straight year. In Spirit Week we finished a controversial second, but those who thought of our class as immature, quickly changed their minds. That winter we went to the most interesting dance in the school’s history ... The Crystal Ball. Better results came in June as we held our Junior Prom. We wished the graduating seniors good luck, but as we watched them go, we realized that some of our closest friends were gone and soon we would all go our separate ways. Smith, J. Ray, D. Tremblay, C. : iS Anderson, S. Reed, M. Medina, D. Andrade, M. Butler, M. Mello For some it was a first, for others it was not a new experience. It was, however, an exciting time for all. The date was June 10, 1988. The place was Cran- ston Hospitality center. The time was the class of 1989's Junior Prom. From the beginning, whether you arrived in a limo or dad’s car, there was a sense of uncertainty. Being in a tuxedo or formal dress was a first for many. In time, everyone forgot their uncertainty and concentrated on having a crowning of the queen, to the last dance, juniors and or their dates escorts could be seen having one of the best times of their junior year. It was obvious that by the end of the night everyone was looking forward to doing it again in their senior year. Studley’s: S. Smith, J. Ray, C. Martin, T. Mooney, R. Kulaga, L. Palazzi, M. Mello, P. Our Senior Supper was held on November 10, 1988 at the Top of the | Court. From dancing and eating to the traditional smoking of cigars, we made memories we would treasure in future years. We were also given the chance to look back into the past when Mr. Hurley presented our 8th grade Camping Trip Slide Show. It was a night for us to be with our friends we had made over the past twelve years, and talk to those we did not “‘known”’ since Jr. High. We danced to the beats of a wild variety of music played by special guest D.J. from 92 PRO FM; Big John Bina. Some people were psyched when he played ‘It Takes Two”’ for the second time; others were glad to hear the Cure. Everyone’s tastes were satisfied. Aside from the dancing, other activities stole the scene: like the bath- room scandal and our free use of the ‘‘soda’”’ bar. But for the most part, we behaved just like Seniors should and we made the faculty happy. All in all, we had a great time. It was one of our last chances to be together as a class and to create some very special moments. None of us will forget the Dirty Dancing impressions, the interesting buffet (with everybody's favorite ziti’s), the smell of cigars, or simply the fun we had those four hours. Let’s, hope that our futures are as special as these past four years. GOOD LUCK, CLASS OF S9ll! | am a stud Dance Fever Eeeeewwwww! Could it be John Travolta? Are we having fun yet? With seniors: Sue Frechette (Captain Punky), Sandra Green, Becky Perry, Jenn Winn and Dana Tremblay; Underclassmen: Tracy Whitford, Jen Hawkins, Jen Champagne, Melissa McCann, and Betsy Roe. The team was obviously not afraid of hard work. Win after win makes up the roster of this group of dedicated athletes. A big block thrown in the way was the loss of their head coach, Ron Colangllo. The defensive coordina: tor, Hank McDeed, filled his position with his own style of coaching. This style, combined with hardwork, produced an outstanding team, but not enough for a winning season. If the players and the coaches continue to work hard, next year a winning season will not be denied. INSTHESDISiANGEmar Is that a football? Coach McDeed Tri-Captains — S. Smith, M. Mello, C. She is extremely active in both school and sports as a member of the girl’s varsity basketball team. Asa says that the Swedish students are not able to choose a wide range of subjects the way American students are able to do. Swedish tenth graders choose a specific study area such as nursing or social sciences. Also walk in the halls. While Swedish schools have less restrictions, Asa said that American schools allow for more expression of personal views. So, Asa, we, the staff, hope that the rest of your stay in America is as good as the first part. Seekonk High School is glad to have Boris Heininger as our German exchange student. Back home in West Berlin, Boris lives with his mother and two friends. Playing pool, swimming or playing ping pong are some ways in which he spends his time. As for sports, Boris enjoys basketball, handball, and badminton. But Boris sometimes “‘just likes to be lazy.”’ The German school system is different from our own. ‘They don’t serve lunch and school is dismissed at 1:25.” Boris also likes the fact that you can play any sport you want. We hope that you've enjoyed America, Boris. Thank you for being with us. Senegal located in Northwestern Africa. Beatrice lives in Senegal’s capitol of Dakar on the Cape Verde peninsula. New members were inducted into the society toward the end of the school year. In order to be considered for membership, each student must maintain an average of 88 or above until their junior year. Then their credentials are reviewed by board of teachers on the basis of character, leadership qualities and extracurricular activities. The elected officers of the society were President: Larry O’Connell, Vice President: Jenn Winn, and Secretary-Treasurer: Eileen McGovern. Every year, certain members of the society are chosen to compete in scholastic competitions called ‘‘Honor Bowls”’. The first of the 1988-89 Honor Bowls was held at Seekonk High School on Tuesday, October 18, 1988. Among the students competing in this Honor Bowl were seniors: Seth Toback, Derek Harrison, Russ Abell, Andrew Wills, Chris Roberge, Tammy Bray, Jenn Winn, and Rob Tobiasz. The eight students were divided into teams of four. Although the first team lost to Old Rochester, the other was able to defeat Dighton-Rehoboth. In the next Honor Bowl, held on Wednesday, December 14, 1988, the students traveled to Case High School in Swansea for another battle of the brains. Seekonk lost to the home team, Case, but was able to come back and deny Fairhaven the win. Seekonk then traveled to New Bedford to meet up against New Bedford Voc-Tech. and Wareham High School on February 15, 1989. In April they traveled to Apponequet to test their knowledge against the students from Apponequet and Bourne High Schools. It is obvious that the students of the Society worked diligently for three rigorous years of studies in order to gain mem- bership into the Society. 123 SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY Row 1: President: D. The seniors who decide to participate in this program leave the school grounds once a week either for a whole day or half day to volunteer their services to the place of their choice. For many students, independent study allows to them a chance to explore jobs related to a career of their choice, while others find it an opportunity to help those around them and their community. Rhode Island Hospital, Povar Animal Hospital, The Washington Park Shelter, Bradley Hospital, Meeting Street School, Goodstart, Aitken School, Arrow Publishing Co., and Stebbings As sociates Inc. are just some of the places where students volunteer their time and efforts; there are many others. Independent Study is a great opportunity to learn the many aspects of a certain field, giving the student a better understanding of it. While participating in Independent Study, most earn a sense of accomplishment and find it to be a wonderful and fulfilling experience. DRAMA CLUB Row 1: S. Medeiros, N. Caccala, K. Wall, T.
