In sports, the home team was nearly always on top. First, our beloved Red Sox miraculously pulled off a pennant victory only to have it skip through the legs of then first-baseman Bill Buckner in one of the best-known blunders in World Series play: winners and losers. Even our Patriots, charging at the whites of everyone’s eyes, pinned down the AFC Championship only to come up against one of the strongest teams in NFL history, those shuffling Bears. And how about our very own Celtics, the pride of the Commonwealth? They are the NBA standard, against whom all great teams will be measured. Lakers may come and go, but the Celtics will always be on top. We saw the likes of Doug Flutie, Marvelous Marvin, Vinny Paz, Pitino, the Friars and the Final Four. Even in our own backyard we’ve seen some of this state’s best high school athletes and teams. The number of cham- pions our class has witnessed in four years, espe- cially this our senior year, is a credit to our athletic staff, and especially us, the graduating Class of 1988 We all experienced the proms and dances, the house parties and summers on the Cape, the weekends in Newport and the ritual biannual perusing of Boston markets. These are a given for New England natives like ourselves. SAT’s and Achievements were taken. Some performed stupendously, and others did not. Some of us have plans for college, and others do not. We may all look back on this and think that we all took the expected course in life. This is not tragic; this is what we are all about. Our history is documented here on these pages, perhaps a copy of classes from the past, or even a blueprint for those yet to come. Nonetheless, Class, we’ve made it. How and for what significant reason remains to be seen.
