These ex- periences were not, however, endured alone. We shared them with a very special person, who four years ago was as new to Seekonk High as we were. A person who came forward to advise a class that no other would dare try and represent. A class that de- served only teachers and disciplinarians but no friends. From a whole crowd emerged one person who would take the challenge and make things work. Over the past four years, this person has changed as much as we have. We have seen her change from Miss Jenson to Mrs. Fantozzi, and she has seen us grow and mature. A simple ‘thanks’ does not seem enough to express an appreciation to someone who so tirelessly and single-handedly took charge of the Class of ‘88 and did so much for us. We have enjoyed several Spirit Weeks, dances and other class functions that would never have ma- terialized without her hard work and dedication. It is for this hard work and dedication that the class of ‘88 is pleased to dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Karen Jenson-Fantozzi. We leave with fond memo- ries and great admiration and respect for her. The Seekonk High School Class of 1988 is now fading into perpetual Memoryland. Just think; no more classes, no more books, no more having to push and shove and be beaten sense- less trying to worm your way to the front . Of the slush puppie line. And papers, and tests, and quizzes, out the window for good — unless of course you're col- lege-bound. Four years in one spot can sure cramp one’s imagination, yet none can say that not one person didn’t at least laugh, or smile, or feel lonely, or sad, or even a bit frustrated at times. These are all natural emotions for vacil- lating semi-adults. Now we're at the crossroads, the looking-back time. i Do you remember: Mr. Hurly and the camping trip? How about the school store? Or those hour-long homework assignments miraculously completed in ten-minute homeroom periods. And Mr. Dias, Principal 1? And whatever hap- pened to those fluorescent clothes into which many girls invested huge sums of money, only to have seen the style fade faster than anyone could buy a Relax T- shirt or even say, “‘Relax?’” There were the preppie fads, and New Wave fads, and even Murphy fads. Our class was also unique in that our generation expe- rienced many crashes. First, there was the tragic 1986 Space Shuttle loss which rocked the nation and devastated NASA’s quest to explore the last and greatest frontier known to man; later, in the autumn of our senior year, we also witnessed Stock Market Crash II, a Black Monday we’ll surely all remember. There was also Bopal, Chernobyl] and the advent of mankind’s new red death, AIDS. In sports, the home team was nearly always on top. First, our beloved Red Sox miraculously pulled off a pennant victory only to have it skip through the legs of then first-baseman Bill Buckner in one of the best-known blunders in World Series play: winners and losers. Even our Patriots, charging at the whites of everyone’s eyes, pinned down the AFC Championship only to come up against one of the strongest teams in NFL history, those shuffling Bears. And how about our very own Celtics, the pride of the Commonwealth? They are the NBA standard, against whom all great teams will be measured. Lakers may come and go, but the Celtics will always be on top. We saw the likes of Doug Flutie, Marvelous Marvin, Vinny Paz, Pitino, the Friars and the Final Four. Even in our own backyard we’ve seen some of this state’s best high school athletes and teams. The number of cham- pions our class has witnessed in four years, espe- cially this our senior year, is a credit to our athletic staff, and especially us, the graduating Class of 1988 We all experienced the proms and dances, the house parties and summers on the Cape, the weekends in Newport and the ritual biannual perusing of Boston markets. These are a given for New England natives like ourselves. SAT’s and Achievements were taken. Some performed stupendously, and others did not. Some of us have plans for college, and others do not. We may all look back on this and think that we all took the expected course in life. This is not tragic; this is what we are all about. Our history is documented here on these pages, perhaps a copy of classes from the past, or even a blueprint for those yet to come. Nonetheless, Class, we’ve made it. How and for what significant reason remains to be seen. The Seekonk High School Class of 88’s Senior Supper was held on November 10, 1987 at the luxurious Johnson and Wales Inn here in town. The theme of the supper was, ‘Our future’s so bright, we need sunglasses.’’ We were, in fact, provided with sunglasses which most wore proudly. Cigars were also consumed by the hundreds, but these were not included in the ticket price. After finding our friends and sitting down, Mr. Hurley, our eighth grade role- model, helped us reminisce and bask in the nostalgia of our Junior High years, mainly in viewing excerpts from the 1984 camping trip. Soon, we were all eating a scrumptious exotic dinner, when the Dee Jay arrived to rock our socks off. His music ran the gamut from Modern English to The Cure and even Janet Jackson, suiting everyone’s tastes. Three hours of food, dance, and general jubilation is probably the best way to describe this night. If you enjoy good eats, friendly people and dancing till you drop, then you will always remember this great time you shared with the 200 plus closest friends you could ever hope to have. The Junior Prom Months in advance, we began to plan for the Junior Prom. Young ladies bought dresses, shoes, pocketbooks, jewelry and much more, while the men rented tuxedos, reserved limousines, visited flower shops and made other important arrangements. After the weeks and even months of preparation, the Big Day finally came. Most of us went to school and managed to get through the day. We raced to Gus’ house, ran to the bank, flew home, jumped into the shower, and then spent several hours getting ready in front of the mirror. After getting mom and dad to put their camera away, we finally left our homes in borrowed, rented or newly purchased cars. Taking 95 to Mansfield, we arrived and took our seats. We pro- ceeded to take our pictures before some students got upset about messing up their hair. We ate and then began to dance and celebrate life. The beginning of the dance featured a break from tradition; a Seekonk Junior danced the first dance with a chair. It was rumored that if he would do so, someone would pay the rental fee on his tuxedo. Throughout the evening, we danced to tunes from the Beastie Boys to Bon Jovi. Eventually we had our Prom Queen, Kerry Silvia, and her court lead us in a dance to our theme, ‘’This Is the Time,” by Billy Joel. We also celebrated a part of history by wit- nessing former principal, Mr. Dias, be crowned Burger King style as our Prom King in honor of his upcoming retirement. Although we all had a truly great time, one question remains un- answered: Who was that child in the white sweat pants, without a date, wearing five bow ties? Yes, the night was a true success that held memories that we will cherish forever, starting from noon the next day. ( Very funny, Wes). The Important Statistics please . . . The Date: March 17, 1986 The Place: The Cafeteria Emporium The Price: Unknown The Mission: To live in rapture fora moment, then leave to get some fast food and rootbeer. The Result: Some cried, some smiled, no one died, and everyone wanted to remain longer in this state of party ecstasy. Of course, these facts do not capture the details that memories do. They will not recall the dancing cir- cles, or the slam dancing rounds, or even the lovely pastry, nor will they bring back the musical genius of Dark Illusion, our very own high school band. What they do enable us to do is return to a more peaceful time, when knights were knights, and kings were kings, when people laughed, and little midgets played joyfully in the sands of great Ulysses. Starting with the freshmen football team, it has not failed to live up to that advanced billing. We have sent legion numbers of teams to the state tournaments, stocked our trophy cases past overflowing, seen individual performances beyond any expectations, filled the local All-Star teams with Seekonk faces, repeatedly had All-Staters at every level and collected several state titles. The names of our students have been seen daily in local newspapers. The next two pages are a tribute to two of the best. Without downplaying the significant achievements of our other star athletes (see the last three pages of the Sports’ section) these pages are set aside to make note of these two remarkable athletes. If there is one question that anyone in the Seekonk school system can answer without fail, that question is: ‘Who is the fastest?” That answer has been the same since Jason Swepson enrolled at the Pleasant Street school. His speed is legendary to those who only heard about it but it draws an even greater appreciation from those who have witnessed it. Images of Jason carrying the ball on the football field will last forever. Jason ran around, through, and even over gridiron opponents, and his feats in track have been even more remarkable: he has run a 10.6 second 100 meters and a 9.7 100 yards. In the newspapers in his senior year, his name was no longer just Jason Swepson, it was ‘Jason Swepson, State 100-yard dash champ.” The only thing that could stop him was an injury, and even that only slowed him for a few weeks. When he was young, he watched his brother play football and he decided then that football was what he was going to do. His final goal is to play in the National Football League, something that is well within his reach considering that he has yet to fulfill his potential. played in six-and-a-half games. students in school history. 92 That he has not reached his potential is perhaps the most astounding thing about him. His status in the minds of his fellow students is “amazing,” but it must be considered that in his sophomore and junior years, he was a secondary runner for the football team, and when he was finally let loose his senior year, he suffered a knee injury. He covered over twelve-hundred yards in his final season, yet he only He considers his injuries a letdown, but realizes that they helped unify the team. When his leg was finally healed and the team all worked together, he culminated his high school career with a 200-plus yards effort in a long sought after win over rival D.R. Along with his opening day 290-yard performance against Old Rochester, that Thanksgiving game ranks as his most satisfying moment. When he entered Seekonk High as a freshman, Jason held enormous talent. This talent was shaped and molded by his coaches, Mr. Mooney in track and Mr. Colangelo in football. They helped him reach beyond himself, not just as an athlete but as a person, contributing to make Jason one of the most widely respected from a Class of Many i Heather Grimshaw Like Jason, Heather is a very pleasant person while also being a star athlete. In both cases, one finds a person with numerous accomplishments coupled with genuine modesty. The words “Tam the best,” or anything to that effect is the last phrase one could ever expect to hear from these two. It seems that since they are both self-motivated individuals, they see no need to brag about what they have accomplished; the only person they _ need to impress is themselves as a result of the individual standards each has established. Indeed, this is the part of their story we all emulate. Heather has been named to Boston Globe All-State teams _ four different times. In this her senior year, she was bestowed the additional honor of being named the Massachusetts Runner-of-the-Year after winning the state meet under frigid weather conditions. The most personally satisfying race for her was her victory in the 800 meters at the New England Meet where she beat a long time nemesis. She is the most sought- after runner from Seekonk since Chris Mullin. What makes Heather so special as a runner is her mental toughness coupled with her talent. She realizes distance run- ning is a mental game, and this is an understanding which she tries to share with her fellow runners; how one feels while one runs is all in the mind; that the winner of the race isn’t much different than the people who finish behind her, just faster and more focused. In addition to this positive attitude, Heather is further aided by her lack of inclination to be satisfied with her past accomplishments; like the best runners, she is only satis- fied when she is working toward even bigger accomplish- ments. Heather and Jason have one last tangible in common: the influence of Coach Frank Mooney, whom they both credit with not only helping improve their performance on the track but also in making decisions about life. This, along with strong family support, has shaped Heather and Jason into outstand- ing students, two individuals who represent the largest group of talented athletes in Seeknonk history, the Class of 1988. All com sidered, Homecoming 1987 was a success. 118 AGAIN This poem's form is taken from E.L.P. SPIRIT WEEK Welcome back my friends to Spirit Week again! We’re so glad you could attend. Come Inside! Come Inside! | There out on the floor, the teachers block the door, Watching tug-of-war; . So intense! So intense! | First the Senior team on the B-Ball court will gleam, | And show they are supreme. What a game! What a game! j | Come Inside; the games have just begun. i Guaranteed, the seniors have it won. | Rest assured, the stands will make you sore; After that, the majority will be bored. Right before your eyes, the kids will eat the pies. ; The winner's lifted high; don’t ask why .. . Just a pie! Just a pie! Next upon the stand, will you please extend a hand To our fancy high school band? Way to go! Way to go! Once it’s time to go, a student's spirit grows; Empty out the rows, Let’s go home! Let’s go home! 123 Foreign Exchange Students Soren Thomsen When I came to America, I had a rev lation. A total of 114 Juniors and Seniors gathered to dance the night away at the Holiday Inn in South Attleboro. Students, usually clad in jeans and sweatshirts, presented themselves in the latest styles of evening wear ranging from either classic velvet dresses to strapless bubble gowns, or dinner jackets to tuxedos. This New Year celebration in- spired everyone to ‘get a little crazy,” and we saw di- mensions of people’s characters we had never seen be- fore. For instance, who could forget John Larkin’s hot dance moves or Frank Capecci’s revival of the 60’s while “Twisting the Night Away?” Much thanks goes out to the faculty who contributed to the excitement and put up with ‘typical’ high school dance occurrences! The night of Friday, January 29th will certainly be a vivid memory for years to come. Once again, the innovative Independent Study Program turned the entire community into a classroom. The program, now in its twelfth year, allows seniors to leave school one day a week to volunteer their servic es to businesses and institutions in the area. The program gives students a chance to explore areas of potential interest as well as the op- portunity to experience and learn lessons which just cannot be learned from a book. Independent Study: Community As Classroom Over the years, the I.S. Program has been popular for students with diversified back- grounds and interests. All of them, however, agree that the program is a unique and val- uable experience. Students this past year could be seen in law offices, hospitals and campaign headquarters where they bene- fited from first-hand experience while attain- ing personal growth. If indeed the greatest way to measure a student’s knowledge is to assess how well he or she applies that knowl- edge, then clearly the Independent Study Program has proven to be that testing ground. . Daryl] Jasper _ Martin Elementary School This experience has been ex- tremely valuable to me. It gave me the chance to take on responsibilities _and prove that I was able to follow through with them. I also enjoy the respect that I receive from the kids. It's different that the respect I get from my peers. They kind of look up to me because they know that I play on the basketball team. Besides working with the groups, I have had the chance to work one-on-one with some of the kids who were having problems in a certain subject. Their improvement makes me feel good. My experience has been extremely rewarding and has given me a chance to get a feel for what my future may hold. Jo Anne Leclerc Bradley Hospital: Pre-School Program For my project, I act as a teacher to seven children. I play with the children, sit with some of the more active ones and sometimes we work on computers. We do works heets on some basic things like colors, num- bers and letters. lam so happy I have gotten the ch- ance to do this; it has really made a difference in my life. Sometimes I come home looking like I haven’t slept in days. It is exhausting, yet it is worth it. I look forward to my Wednesdays. I feel like I’m really helping these children and making a difference in their life — not to men- tion everything they have taught me! Frank Capecci Rhode Island Public Defender’s Office For my Independent Study, I vol- unteer at the Public Defender’s office in the Garrahy Court Complex. My job then is to interview the defendant referred by the judge to the office. The interview requires me to request financial and personal information, as well as, the facts dealing with the criminal case at hand. Although my project was intended to teach me solely about the court system, it has taught me much more. I have met a whole different type of people. My work has forced me to become more open minded, less judgmental and to open me to a part of life I had never been exposed to before. Ilearned a lot about myself and about people in gene ral. This has been an extremely valuable experience for me. Sarah Eirman Mount Hope Day Care Center My work at the Center is primarily with three to four-year-olds. I par- ticipate in “group time,’”” where we play in the block area or with table toys. I also take the kids outside at break times and help serve their lunches. While this is all important and enjoyable, the most important aspect of my work is to comfort the kids. Many of the kids are not ac- customed to being cared for by people other than their parents, and helping them adjust is an extremely important task. While leaving school once a week can add to the daily pressures, it also provides a much-needed relief from day-to-day work. The program also provides me with great personal grat- ification. Peter Jennings Massachusetts Conference United Church of Christ During the time I spend at the cen- ter in Framingham, I work on various projects from putting out mailings to calling up nationally renowned church figures in order to ask them if they would like to attend special events, I chose this project because I felt I could continue to work on the same things that I work on while serv- ing on the State Council for Youth Ministries. This project is very rewarding. Many times there are direct results from whatever effort I put into it. I think this has been worthwhile be- cause it not only introduced me to the long days of a Boston commute, but it also taught me lessons about myself that would not I think the program is certainly worthwhile, and I would encourage other students to par- ticipate. . 4 My “i ' € = seid rT oe Heather Grimshaw Rhode Island Hospital For my project I chose to work with hospitalized children. While at the hospital, I would do a number of things. I would give individualized attention to certain children. I would also visit kids in the play room and visit the bedside of those children confined to rest. I chose this project because I would like to become a child psychologist. Working with children who are des- perately ill teaches me how to work around children who are not healthy. This project has prepared me in simple ways providing me with an education I could not receive any- where else. I’m really happy I chose to work at the hospital. Not only did I learn several meaningful lessons, but I believe I grew a lot, too. 137 ee SSS Science Department Features Fairs and Speakers ‘ PRESSURERS a a | oe Senior Chris Vartanian (above), who finished second, presents his project at the February Science Fair to Mr. McAuliffe, while (below left) Alison Boldt’s project on ‘Ecological Relationships in an Aquatic Ecosystem” received first- place honors. HOW WELL BO - HOUSEHOLD, PROBUCTS Z | 4 FICHT ° BACTERIA | Guest Speakers Visit SHS Guest speakers always seem to enhance a lesson or topic, and this was the notion that lead to the recruitment of local lecturers to appear in many science classes throughout the school year. They spoke on a variety of topics which included lectures in cancer treatments and one in biomedical systems. One lecturer, Mr. Dussault, a biomedical engineer who re- sides in Seekonk, lectured to about 55 students in early Jan- uary. While he primarily focused on career choices in biomedi- cai engineering, he also fascinated the group of fifty-plus students with information about biomedical engineering. These lectures clearly enhanced the science classes this year. s , a a. % Wa he Juniors in Mr. Corriveau’s Chemistry class listen to M. Dussault speak on Bio-medical careers. Student Scientists Excel The sciences were very active at SHS this year, and February was the monthin which budding student scientists show- cased their talents in a Science Fair held in the small cafeteria. The Fair was intended to give students an opportunity to experiment on their own and gain an independent interest in | the sciences. It represented experiments and studies conducted by students in the three major branches of the sciences: biol- ogy, chemistry and physics. Students’ projects were judged by science depart ment teaching staff in several ways, most notably: scientific method, record keeping and documentation, approach to the experiment and public display. When the judging was completed, Seniors Allison Boldt and Chris Var- tanian won first and second-place honors respectively. Allison’s project ex- amined the close relationship between sea animals and aquatic plants, while Chris showcased his experiments in aif pressure. Junior Kara Stutz’s experiment on fighting household bacteria took the bronze medal. MONEY Oe McDonalds. . . Then and Now Remember the days when Seekonk’s only attractions were Ann Hope, McDonalds and a huge six-theater Showcase Cinema? Everything was simple then; rare was a traffic jam. Finding a parking space close to a store was only difficult during the two weeks preceeding Christmas. During our grammar school years, this is all our town had to offer: Route 6. That says it all. With easy on off access from Providence, Bar- rington and Swansea, people started to dis- cover this area of Seekonk as a neat little shopping haven. Thanks to a good economy, Seekonk’s expansion began. The order may not be correct, but it seemed to start with a huge food warehouse calléd Heartland. They offered a new concept in grocery shopping twenty-four hours a day: no frills and super- low prices. Then came the Seekonk and Bay- berry Plazas. Add to that many restaurants ranging from L.L. Evan to Dunkin Donuts. Meanwhile, some of the older businesses either expanded or were renovated. McDonalds remodelled its interior that con- tains two drive-up windows. Ann Hope expanded its sports and automotive depart- ment, and the Showcase added four more theaters that sometimes shows up to twelve movies. A few years after it all began, Seekonk hosted the huge Seekonk Plaza com- plex, and Route 6 was packed with stores. Although Seekonk was multiplying, as freshmen, we limited ourselves to the Showcase and McDonalds. Our sophomore year held little change. We were just starting to make friends with students who had cars. It was our junior year that we shed our skin. A 3 x 2 piece of plastic with our picture on it opened the door. We were released. Cars, music and cruizin’ were the only hip things. By our senior year we had taken this all for granted. Route 6 has changed froma barren strip of farmland to a bustling retail center. In much the same way, we have also grown. No longer do we order Happy Meals. Now we order Big Macs. As Route 6 and the Class of 1988 continue to grow, we can be assured that it will always be “ a good time for the great taste of McDonalds.” Best Wishes to the class of 1988! You did it!! — Uncle Frankie Love and best wishes for all you do in life — Auntie Diane To a “Saint Mary’s’’ Parish stand-out, Tom. . . Froma St. Mary’s Parish stand-in, Fr. Bill Tommy: As you look to the future, never forget your past. Always remember family and friends as they were in the best of times. A sunny outlook is not a cure for all the world’s ills, but it sure makes life a lot more fun. Leave the Pessimism and grouchy attitudes to the scrooges of the world. Try to always treat others as you yourself would want to be treated. Strive for the best, but settle for your own personal best. Second or third is better than not trying at all. Nev er let anyone discourage you from trying; unless of course it’s trying to shoot yourself in the foot. Half the fun of succeeding at something is getting to where you want to be. You'll edge forward and slide back; climb up and fall down, run and slip out, but sooner or later if you keep trying you'll make it every time. You meet a new challenge you'll learn something that will broaden your view on life and enrichen your attitude and character. In the end you will be able to look back at your life and never be sorry for anything you've done. Life will owe you nothing and you will be at peace with yourself. — Best of luck!
