Stuart M. Weintraub May 27, 1937 — February 10, 1987 Death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because dawn has come. Friends don’t die. Stu was my colleague and friend who has died. Death comes to other people not friends. Friends are supposed to be there forever. Stu was my friend and now I will have to try to accept his death. For twenty one years, he was always there constant and steady, caring and dedi- cated, always positive and ready to help. During our long association, I never heard him speak negatively about anyone regard- less of how negative or cruel they might have been to him. I don’t recall him ever criticizing or raising his voice even once and boy there were many occasions in which I deserved it. In times of frustration and disappointment, he was always there to be a sounding board offering advice and comfort. As the corridor filled with smoke from one of his numerous explosive demonstra- tions (God, how he loved to do them), he would emerge from his room with a big smile cheerfully offering his condolences to Mr. Corriveau who had to use his room the next period. When someone needed an appliance repaired, it always had a way of ending up in room 120. When Mrs. DiOrio had someone in trouble with A-V equip- ment, Stu was on the job. In our early days at SHS, I remember Mr. Frazier and I eating lunch with Stu as he described how he would like to invent this or that device to deal with some un- usual problem he had thought up. During our prep period, he would sit there and dream up experiments we could do in Sci- ence 9 as I would feverishly try to copy them down. He was Seekonk High School’s Thomas Edison. He gave of himself self- lessly expecting nothing in return. Because he was alow-keyed kind of guy, I took his friendship for granted and never told him how important it was to me. It took his death for me to realize how mean- ingful that friendship was. Last night as I sat at the wake, I saw numerous students come pay their respects and farewell to Mr. Weintraub. I couldn’t help but feel that they were trying to say the same thing to him that I’m trying to say now. Oh Stuart, how much we will miss you. What a void you will leave in all our lives. If there is sucha place as heaven, you must be there. Good bye my friend. You will be sorely missed.
