Weintraub May 27, 1937 — February 10, 1987 Death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because dawn has come. Friends don’t die. Stu was my colleague and friend who has died. Death comes to other people not friends. Friends are supposed to be there forever. Stu was my friend and now I will have to try to accept his death. For twenty one years, he was always there constant and steady, caring and dedi- cated, always positive and ready to help. During our long association, I never heard him speak negatively about anyone regard- less of how negative or cruel they might have been to him. I don’t recall him ever criticizing or raising his voice even once and boy there were many occasions in which I deserved it. In times of frustration and disappointment, he was always there to be a sounding board offering advice and comfort. As the corridor filled with smoke from one of his numerous explosive demonstra- tions (God, how he loved to do them), he would emerge from his room with a big smile cheerfully offering his condolences to Mr. Corriveau who had to use his room the next period. When someone needed an appliance repaired, it always had a way of ending up in room 120. When Mrs. DiOrio had someone in trouble with A-V equip- ment, Stu was on the job. In our early days at SHS, I remember Mr. Frazier and I eating lunch with Stu as he described how he would like to invent this or that device to deal with some un- usual problem he had thought up. During our prep period, he would sit there and dream up experiments we could do in Sci- ence 9 as I would feverishly try to copy them down. He was Seekonk High School’s Thomas Edison. He gave of himself self- lessly expecting nothing in return. Because he was alow-keyed kind of guy, I took his friendship for granted and never told him how important it was to me. It took his death for me to realize how mean- ingful that friendship was. Last night as I sat at the wake, I saw numerous students come pay their respects and farewell to Mr. Weintraub. I couldn’t help but feel that they were trying to say the same thing to him that I’m trying to say now. Oh Stuart, how much we will miss you. What a void you will leave in all our lives. If there is sucha place as heaven, you must be there. Good bye my friend. You will be sorely missed. Charles J. Four years ago Mrs. Steere and our class entered the school together. She brought her fresh ideas and a new feeling. Mrs. Velardo greeted us with previous experi- ence and gave to our class a sense of tradition. With this mixture of ideas we were led on to our victo- ries and successes. Mrs. Velardo and Mrs. Steere bestowed on us much knowledge which we shall carry with us into our futures. APPRECIATION Itis too often that hard work goes unappreciated. With this in mind we would like to recognize Mr. Richard Dias and Mrs. Helen Keough for their lasting dedica- tion to the school. In his 20 years Mr. Dias has developed a high standard of leadership since the high school opened in 1966. Through all of the changes over the years Mr. Dias has excelled admirably. As a result, our school has become a product of high quality under his administration. For this we commend him and wish him luck in the future. Behind the administration is a supporting staff which were responsible for our education. This education, however, did not only include that which is learned from books. Mrs. Helen Keough, as teacher and advisor, has taught us not only the basic facts but also has taught us about leadership and caring. She is appreciated and respected not only by her students but also by the members of the National Honor Society and her col- leagues. As advisor for the National Honor Society she has been able to point out our weaknesses and lead us to our victories. As we look forward to the future with both anticipa- tion and uncertainty, we will always remember these two very important people who helped to guide and prepare us for the future. For this we are extremely grateful. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We would like to express special thanks to Mrs. Diorio and Mrs. Wolfe for their lasting dedication to our school. During their many years of service they have greeted us with enthusiasm and were constantly willing to help. Their caring and guidance will remain with us through the years to come. Thomas H. It was an exciting time for us, because it was the first formal event we had ever attended as a class. At first, we all felt slightly uncomfortable with the girls in formal dresses and the guys in suits and jackets. We didn’t seem to mind, however, when everyone started to dance. The Entertainer rocked us through the night to our favorite songs. In all, it was a super time for the Class of 87 and a night that will not soon be forgotten. “Pll give Travolta a run for his money.” “You look mahvelous, darling.” + 4 it ' “Gross! What’s in the Swedish Meatballs!” This Was the Night! The time FINALLY arrived for our Junior Prom. It seems we had waited forever for this big night. After plan- ning all year we decided it would be held at the Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingston on June 13, 1986. The backdrop of Narragansett Bay and a beautiful terrace was the perfect setting a very special night. With Mrs. Steere’s expert directions we all arrived safely without too much trouble. As we filtered into the ball- room, we lined up for our pictures. Everyone looked so nice: the guys in ties, and the girls in their gowns. At last we were maturing. As the music was playing we began dancing and the night got off to a really great start thanks to the expert “D.J.ing” by the Entertainer. The dinner was served and what a change from our regular lunches at school. Later on in the evening the waiters and waitresses selected the queen, Paula Micheletti, and her court, Rachael Wills, Chrissy Marchetti, Chris Pacheco, and Beth Matonis. After they were announced we all danced to our theme song “This Could be the Night.” Finally the time came to say good- bye! As we were leaving we got our favors and gave our thanks to our advisors, Mrs. Steere and Mrs. Velardo. This was surely a night that would forever be etched in our memories. Joe Medina, Beth Matonis, James Warren, Chris Marchetti, Paula Micheletti, Paul Faria, Christine Pacheco, Keith Andrews, Rachael Wills, Dana Roderick. No! Not another picture. n. v o Ss) aol GS = B oD a fe) = 3 ie) 8) u xs w iss] a B Hey, Freshman Year (1983-1984) We came to the high school filled with anticipation and ex- citement. It would be difficult getting accustomed to a new school, new rules and new people. Luckily, though, through rumors we found out that elevators did not exist. This gave us a slight edge on the upperclassmen. We were surprised to find that we had so many more freedoms in high school than we did in junior high school. In the lunch room we did not have to listen to Mr. Kaveny talking on a microphone while we were eating to keep us in line. Up and down staircases didn’t exist. Probably the biggest privilege was that we were 60 allowed to chew gum without getting detention. Spirit week arrived; how- ever, our spirits had a lot to be desired, as we clinched last place. As the year went on we had fund raisers and when the summer months rolled around we had to take finals, some- thing quite new to us. When we made it through finals we could all say that we had made it through the first year of high school. We all knew that this was the place that would occupy a large part of our lives for four years as a place for both growing and maturing. Sophomore Year (1984-1985) Now as Sophomores we could pick on the Freshmen, which was something we thought we’d never do. We had our magazine drive which was very successful which was essential for our future Senior Supper and proms. This year we were determined to win Spirit Week, as we all had to wear jeans, white shirts and bandannas in the stands. Still after all the work with posters and preparation we maintained third place in the competition. After Spirit Week we knew we had to get some unity in our class, so the student council planned a Sophomore Semi- Formal around Christmas time. Even though we didn’t have a very big turn out, we still had a lot of fun. Then we ordered our class rings and now we could feel the true spirit of high school. This year probably seemed the longest because most of us fall into the “‘“Sophomores Slump” but we came around after exams, for we would finally become Juniors and start plan- ning our first prom. Our Senior year was by far the best for most of us. We could finally rule the school! It was a busy year because on top of homework we had to worry about S.A.T.’s, college applications, financial aid and meeting yearbook deadlines. Our class became closer than ever as we had many class func- tions. Our Senior Supper was a lot of fun, especially remem- bering the 8th grade camping trip and how we looked when we were smaller. At the end of the year we had our prom at the Biltmore Plaza, class night, graduation, and then we would go off on sepa- rate roads. Sadness hit us then, as we Senior Year (1986-1987) recalled all of the good times we had and how quickly the time passed. The realization that some of the people we’ve grown up with since grade school might never see again was an emotional experience. This was the saddest part of the whole year. We all know that we would not have the securi- ties of high school anymore and that we would have to go out and make the best of our- selves in the real world. We will forever remember our high school days, our friends, the teachers that made impressions on us and the changes that occured, which all helped us to grow and become the people we are today. Junior Year (1985-1986) We came back as upperclass- men and we felt important. We were optimistic about the year to come. Then we took the P- SAT’s and got our first taste of the college boards. For Spirit Week we all wore t-shirts, as we stood in the bleachers cheering our teams on to a hopeful victory. But needless to say, we got another stroke of bad luck and placed third. We began planning our Prom daily and we had some- thing to look forward to at the end of the year. We were sad because many of our friends were graduating and we know that next year would be our year. 61 CLASS CLOWN Beth Matonis Steve Beckler “The picture speaks for itself.” MOST ARTISTIC Melissa Masse Jeff Defontes ‘ S- ” ‘So we can use brushes tomorrow, Mrs. Rodriquez? It was definitely a night to remember with all of the dancing and the reminiscing. This supper was probably more meaningful than our Junior Prom because it was the first real time our class was together as one. Through the efforts of Mr. Hurley, Colleen Sullivan, and Janet Vermette, the first half of the night was devoted to our eighth grade camping trip slide show. It was hilarious to see how everyone looked four years ago and to see how we’ve changed. But it struck all our emotions when we realized that this was our last year together and how sad we will feel come springtime. After the buffet, the dancing began and we shook the Antler with the Entertainer with our chicken dance. It was all over at 10:30 p.m. but everyone felt they could continue dancing all through the night. The Senior Supper was a true blast! . . . VICTORY MADE HOMECOMING On the day of the Homecoming Game everyone was in high spirits. We had a rally the day before, which really helped all of us get psyched up for a Seekonk victory. As the game got underway, the band played and the football teams ran out to the field. We were trailing 7-0 against D.Y., in the first two quarters, but we still had hope. At half-time the band did their formation on the field and afterwards our homecoming queens came out with their escorts on their class floats. The Freshman queen was Jennifer Drumm and her es- cort was Mark Rebello. Their float was a truck with a flower arrangement. They came in third place in the float competition. Each class would accumulate points for Spirit Week for their efforts. Diana Carey was the Sophomore queen. She came out with her escort, Lance Custodio and they sat on a hayride truck. The Sophomores clinched first place in the competition. The Juniors queen was Tania Beale and her escort Arthur Ferreira. Their second place float was a Christmas a . over-Girl . . scene. ' til] Be ari look. Melissa Masse and her escort, Tim Mooney, graced the rs pmey Senior float; However our autumn scene did not go over too well and the Seniors came in last place. One thing we were all happy about was that we won the homecoming football game by one point. Thanks to all the Warriors and especially Leo Perreira who made a 34 yd. field goal. 92 93 SPIRIT WEEK 86-87 Everyone was excited because Spirit Week had come and Thanksgiving vacation was just around the corner. On the first day the Seniors came in dressed according to the match-your-hat theme, the Juniors were hospital personnel and patients, the Sophomores arrived on the scene as thieves and the freshmen wore their clothes inside out. The Seniors though at first confusing to some students and staff won first place in most originality. The can drive started out on Monday and continued through until Wednesday all the classes contrib- uted cans to win this competition. The second day started and everyone came into the school in high spirits. The Seniors came in wearing their Senior Supper outfits the Juniors were in black and white, the Sophomores dressed in bedtime wear and the freshmen turned heads in the hallways as they dressed as opposite sexes. The Events began with the obstacle course and Eric Vandal and Jessica Humphrey running for Seniors came out on top. The classes competed against each other to get into the finals on Wednesday with the Juniors taking the edge with the pie-eating contest already under their belt and the Seniors held onto the hope of their victory in the trivia contest. On the third day the gym buzzed with ex- citement because the finals were to be decided today. The Juniors won the basketball game against the Seniors with an incredibly controversial last second shot by Daryl Jasper. We all enjoyed the teachers’ obstacle course and the Sophomores filled the gym with cheers as Mrs. Horton and Mr. Primiano crossed the finish line. The results came in with the Sophomores coming in fourth place, the Freshmen coming in third place, the Juniors com- ing in second place, and the Seniors ruled the competition bringing in a definite first place vic- tory. We all remained to cheer our football team to a hopeful victory on Thanksgiving day. =! a only Bob. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, oh ... it’s ceN ARE IRS unos = Vv | ts ¥ Sir mw ; ‘ 4 % ri o ae ee . With a record of 14-1 their only defeat was to Old Rochester, but they still managed to become South Coast Conference Co-Champs. Outstanding performances by the team came from Irene Sullivan and Carlene Perry. Sullivan played first singles for three years while Perry was undefeated in league and non-league play. Other key players who contributed to the season were All Star’s Lisa Miranda, Tanha Soares, and Krista McCullagh. Coach Peterson-Whatley feels that the girls will have another good season with the return of four of seven of her starters and the juniors who will fill in the vacant positions. rie “The racket’s stuck to my face!” | 106 | What a Tough Practice! The team finished with an overall record of 14-2 and the South Coast Conference Championship, while defeating for the first time rival Somerset in the first round of the state playoffs. Contributing dramatically to the success of the boys’ tennis team were All-Area Team members, Steve Beckler, Jeff Howell, and the undefeated doubles team of Michael Stewart and Mark Pitassi. Also playing well were Peter Stewart at the top singles position and new varsity members Corey Scott, Dave Collins, and Matt Holmes. The girls’ outdoor track team under Coach Gary Seal had what can only be described as a typically awesome season. Astronomical victories such as the Warriors’ 131-5 victory over New Bedford Voke and their 120-16 win against Wareham demonstrate Seekonk’s domination over the South Coast Conference. The League Champions also handed in strong performances in the State Class Meet and All State Meet finishing second and third respectively. Behind the team’s enormous success were the individual contributions of the team’s six All-Star Team members. In all, four school records were broken as Stacie Senay threw the discus 109'9 , Elisa Warren triple jumped 35'5%4 and finished the 330 low hurdles in just 45.2 seconds and Missy Silva flew over 5'2” in the high jump. The return of Missy Silva as well as underclassmen All-Stars, Julie Young, Heather Grimshaw and Jill Baldani virtually guarantee still another successful season for 1987 and a continuation of the excellence of girls’ track at Seekonk. The girls’ softball had what was refer- red to by coach Norm Bowlin as a “roller coaster season.” Individuals such as Lisa Dutra, who as the team’s catcher threw out a record 28 would be basestealers, Dawn Labounty, recipient of a U.S. Army Scholar Athlete Award and Chris Devine who, along with Dutra, was chosen to two All-Area teams provided the season’s high points. However, the team’s failure to produce key wins against the league leaders in pivotal games inserted the deep slides and sharp turns. This instability left the team with an overall losing record of 9 wins and 10 loses and no berth in the state tournament. Despite the disappointment of the 1986 season, Coach Bowlin retains his continuous optimism for the 1987 sea- son. He feels that all the team needs is the stability competent pitching to achieve the team’s main goal, qualifying for post-season play. iba Teamwork Equals Triumph werRS Se She TE See: TRA Ee : Ky ‘f ‘df | Ye tg eu Ti | Musa “7 Ma Row 1, L-R: McCaughey, S. Although they lost in the first round of the state tournament the DOMINIQUE! “Te’s still stuck” girls still have a lot to be proud of. The team lost only one game during the entire regular season. Obviously they had very few weaknesses. Coach Kulaga emphasized often the team’s depth. He played all nine of his varsity players in every game. The team’s leading scorer Christine Devine was also quick to credit the entire team for its successes. Truly, each of the team’s members deserves equal credit for her contribution to the team’s consistent record of victories. Seniors Tracy Murphy and Sue Head as cen- ter and forward respectively provided strength and scoring, while Sharon Wills and Tanha Soares added depth to the guard posi- tion. This year’s team featured a host of maturing juniors and a few ever improving seniors as well as some unexpected potential stars and a new energetic coach eager to prove hi mself at the varsity level. However, none of these elements fit together properly. Of the returning younger players the trio of Darrel Jasper, Jon Bowers, and Jeff Howell showed great promise. However, Jas- pers strong outside shooting, Bowers strong presence under the net and Howell’s all-around hustle were not given the time to make an impact under coach Ken McClouskey’s plan of rapid ro- tation. McClouskey’s coaching style also alienated potential huge-impact players like Scott Miranda and Tony Soares. This in- compatibility between the different factions of the team is prob- ably the leading cause of the winless season. Individual perform- ances, however, should not be ignored. Bill Kinsley and Shawn McCormick added a rare intensity from a senior perspective while Jose Medina and Ralph Tomei demonstrated skills which will undoubtably be useful next year. One can only anticipate a strong returning team, the aid of a strong t.v. program and a new head coach will make next year a success. 138 Killer basketball “I should have been a swimmer” | : “Hey, Give it back!” Grasping at a shadow Soccer practice m Sa Row 1, L-R: T. The team continued its winning streak by taking first place in the Max Read Memorial, and for the second straight year were South Sectional Champs. The season concluded with the Warriors tak- ing fourth place in the Mass States, the 200 yard Medly Relay team of Tim Dolan, Erick Bergstrand, Evan Gwillam and Matt Henson were chosen as BOSTON GLOBE ALL SCHOLASTIC TEAM. Members of the Southern Conference Championship all star team along with Dolan, Bergstrand, Gwillam and Henson were Zach Hatch and Larry O’Connell. Coach Ellis Mayers feels that the team may lack in depth next year but the quality will be there. Mayers is depending on senior Dave Collins, Ted Kamionek and Peter Willis to lead the way for another champion- ship. 141 mi “ee Row 1, L-R: J. Anderson, J. Andreozzi, C. Scott, E. Vandal, K. Despite the loss of Todd Urquhart who was unable to play due to an injury, the Warriors finished in a tie for second place in the SCC behind Bourne. They then quali- fied for the play offs where they defeated Medway (5-3). Leading the way for the WARRIORS were co-captains Tosh Warren and Eric Vandal. The season came to an end after Seekonk was defeated by Westwood in the quarter finals, leaving them with an over all lead 12-4-2. Coach Brian Emond believes that the return of underclassmen Joe Pardi, John Anderson, Jim Ferreira, Keith Shallcross and Sean Smith will be the catalyst for another ex- cellent season next year. earrse= we eee - “Daddy, please don’t spank me” 143 FOOTBALL CHEERLEADING The football cheerleaders braved the cold and wind of Seekonk’s fall Saturdays to keep the huge crowds at the Warriors’ games cheering. The girls’ efforts were greatly appreciated by the football players and coach Colangelo. Their endzone act dazzled the opposing cheerleaders while exciting the spectators at half-time. The cheerleaders also add greatly} to the noise while the action is in progress. The rink can get pretty cold, especially for someone wearing a short skirt. : Despite the low temperatures, the hockey cheerleaders keep the spirits high. Hockey Cheerleading The captains: Carlene Perry and Chris Olean, and the advisors, Mrs. Miranda and Mrs. Hunt, make sure of that because that is the cheerleaders’ job. At times they do take a little razzing from people, but it is worth it when they ride the bus home with a winning team. Whether they are “munching” the ref. or falling off the bleachers, a lot of screaming, laughing, and fun goes on around these twelve girls. Last of all, thanks to Matt Comery and Mr. Smith, King Philip will know to never try to look up Seekonk hockey cheerleaders’ skirts. Thanx guys! Janet, Cheryl, Lisa and Bernadine — Narragansett July 5-July 12 — our own house — summer of 86. A week of no parents, no rules, no curfew, no responsibilities and tons of fun. We lived on macaroni and cheese, bagels, and alcohol. Our after midnight swims and all the strangers we met were a blast. “We don’t have to take our clothes off to have a good time. We can dance and party all night and drink some cherry wine” (coolers). UNFORGETABLE!! Cheryl (Hunka), who knows maybe you'll be my sister-in-law!!?? If not, we are still the best of friends. We have had too many good times together. The play, Rob, Fresh, Mislead, Sandy’s house, sneaking in at all hours of the morning, the night we crashed that doctor’s party and tore up the dance floor, and our trips to Fall River were just some of them. Remember: English, pant coat, “Michael you look comphy,” bite with the girls, feature, Store 12, etc. Don’t slow down (get it). Lots of Love Janet (Jawack) P.S. We’ll start our diets tomorrow!! (Yeah right) Lisa, Sorry we never made it to Ho Jo’s at 3:00 a.m. for breakfast, but there was a meetin’ in the Ladies Room at Shadows. Don’t forget Lupees’ (We lived there) Tommy. He’s so cute! Drink MF, Drink MF, Drink MF, Drink, the night we dressed up in tuxedos or when your parents went away. (What a Party!) Rum and cereal???? Sean still owes us some Bailey’s. Our Craig talks, life talks, and the tears were all part of our friendship. Jeffery was the best — can you Woo, Woo, Woo??? I know you can, and IJ love you for it. Janet. Bernadine, Don’t ever forget — 3 Continental Court, the Hooters concert with Tom and Eric or what you did in front of us in Narragansett. Remember I still have blackmail pictures. Love Janet. Tammy, I can’t wait to be a bride’s maid. Best of Luck. I hope the two of you are always happy. A-F-A Love Janet. Sue, Where do I begin?? California wine coolers, blueberry bubble gum, car Palace, dog it, kill it, ask him, lover girls, “bye holly-hobbie,” Ruben, Junk B., the Hawaiian party, the river, 4-wheel drive, you peeing in your pants, your dog biting my arm off, the hot club, free drinks nice doggie, “Where have you two been???” B.K. (extra cheez) ordering a salad bar with Russian dressing at the drive thru, the band trip, I want you, singing into hairspray and brushes, talks about boys, Heart Concert, 11 coolers in a row, threats in downtown Providence, drunk driving, the Senior Prom with Keith and Ray. Perrywinkles, Richard and Joe, all our long conversations and all the time we pulled each others hair because we were laughing so hard. Don’t ask me how it all started, but let’s hope it never ends. Tell me we don’t have too many memories!!! Thank you for always being there and for being a great friend. Love Ya Janet. Charlene, what, I haven’t know you forever!!! (We won't tell). To all my friends — J can’t thank you enough for everything. We have shared so much together. The laughter and fun was great and even the hard times turned out OK., because we all learned from each other. If we didn’t understand each of our differences, we wouldn’t make it. We have to stay in touch so the good times can continue. Hugges and Kisses . . . Janet P.S. I don’t want to grow up!!!! George, I know things didn’t turn out perfectly the way we planned, but I am thankful that we still have each other, to depend on. “Once in your life you find someone, who will turn your world around, bring you up when you're feeling down. Yeah nothing could change what you mean to me.” This is true because we have been through so much together. The good thing is we are still very close. “Now our dreams are coming true through the good times and the bad,” I’ll be standing there by you!!!! I'll never forget the fun we had with each other. (ha, ha) Mom and Dad — You made my dreams come true. I couldn’t have done it without you. Often during troubled times we don’t stop to thank the “little people.” The shoulders we cried on, the ears we confessed to, the arms in which we found comfort or the hearts in which we found love. So now that tears have dried and my heart is content, I am thanking you both to let you know that your love has meant everything to me and my life.
