We entered the doors feeling confident and ready to begin work. We had experience in dealing with the high school life, and we feared no one. We were now permitted into the large cafeteria for study and had the privilege of talking and moving around. Spirit week was another victory for us. We won the can drive and our reigning pie-eater. John Perry, broke his tooth by smashing his face into the pie. In the hall, girls dressed as boys and boys dressed as girls could be seen everywhere. We were an entire class of Boy George's. Homecoming rally arrived and Tracy Mooney took over for freshmen queen Janet Marn. Another exciting aspect of our SOPHOMORE year was Drivers-Ed. December came and we were allowed to order our class rings. When they arrived, everyone realized that we were now official high school students. As the year passed, we had matured and had come to realize how great our next two years would be. We were not invited to parties where we listened to the British Rock of Duran-Duran and The Police. The departure of Mrs. Armburst and Mrs. Wing was felt by all. but the arrival of Joe Stud, the substitute teacher, was easily appreciated by the girls. Our FRESHMAN year was one of many surprises as we came to the S.H.S. filled with fear as well as excitement. We shocked the school with our freshman victory in Spirit Week, especially upset- ting the seniors who had held the title for the previous two years. The canned goods and atten- dance gave us a head start, and although we lost most of the athletic competitions, the pie- eating contest pulled us through. We demonstrated our newly- found maturity as High School students by dressing as martians and. believe it or not, “trashbags. Breakdancing came into fashion as we all “Beat It to the beat of Michael Jackson. Being a freshman was fine until we tried to go to parties, and we realized how terribly unwanted we were. We eagerly awaited the end of the year, but we had one last obstacle left to conquer: FINAL EXAMS! They did have one advantage though, we were free by lunch time to leave school and hit the beaches! We finally realized that we were really in high school when our pictures appeared in the yearbook. What a thrill! 8 At long last. SENIOR YEAR had arrived and now we could RULE THE SCHOOL just as the Boss. Bruce Springsteen was ruling the Rock World. We thought that after being here three years we had adjusted to everything but we were not prepared for the new set of rules which included a new bell schedule. Rather than the customary five- minute break between classes, there were now only three, which limited our social life drastically. We quickly compromised on four due to the mad rush in the balls. After a few days, school once again for monotonous and we all looked forward to the Senior Supper. Senioritis was already setting in. The big question of the year was whether or not we were going to attend Harvard or C.C.R.I. in the fall of ‘86. College applications were dreaded by all seniors. The only good aspect of going to college was getting out of class to meet with college representatives. The football players were psyched for Homecoming, and the support was shown by their school in the rally. Everyone awaited Spirit Week as the Seniors anticipated a fourth con- secutive win. The winter was long and drawn out. but we found some relief in winter sports. As spring arrived we all prepared for our action-packed last week at Seekonk High. First on the agenda was Class Night directly followed by our Senior Prom at the Sheraton Islander in Newport. On the last and final day of our experience at Seekonk High we graduated with mixed emotions. Our time at Seekonk High will always be looked upon with fond memories. The beginning of our JUNIOR YEAR marked the half way point of our high school career. Summer had ended but you couldn't tell by the way we were dressed. The halls were filled with surf-style outfits, expecially the always popular Ocean Pacific (O P. to the in-crowd), and even boys with jams. These attempts to keep summer alive, however, did not postpone the inevitable PSAT's. Where did those words came from? Not English! We really had the upperclassmen spirit, though, and it came through when we once again proved that the Class of '86' was unbeatable by win- ning our third consecutive Spirit Week. Ghostbusters and nerds led us to victory under the sign Born in 68. out in 86! . Nellie Couto proudly represented us as homecoming queen. Prince and Madonna were the star idols of the year. We were getting into the grove and saying Let's go crazy by the time winter arrived. Winter also was the time when most of us had reached the magical age of sixteen, and that meant driving. Lessons with Mr. Weintraub prepared us to hit the roads. And. of course, one can never plan for the Junior Prom too early. All the time and money invested in tuxedos, gowns, limos, flowers really paid off. Our night. June 7. was Heaven especially for our Prom Queen, Kerri Holmes. The year ended on a low note, with final exams, infamous SAT's and good-byes to many good friends in the senior class. But we would return as SENIORS, and that was the best part. 9 o S S Annual Camping Trip — April 27, 1982 Our Second Try — WE DID IT OUR WAY Friends Forever How embarassmg! The night of our Junior Prom will be remembered fondly by all. Our prom was held at the Sheraton in Mansfield and our theme song was HEAVEN. It was very strange to see our whole class dressed in gowns and tuxedos, rather than their casual style of dress. For the majority of the girls the first item on the agenda was a trip to the ladies room. Here everyone complimented each other and retouched their own makeup. Once everyone had settled down at their assigned tables, couple pictures were taken by numbers. Soon after pictures, our delicious dinner arrived which everyone loved. After dinner, we once again began to dance to the beat of the music. Next was the picking of the queen and her court, while the class of 1986 danced to their theme song. The waiters and waitresses were assigned to the tough task of picking these girls. Kerri Holmes was crowned queen while Elisa Warren. Mara Ferreira. Michelle Marek. and Jen McKenzie were honored members of her court. As the night came to a close, we all collected favors and left the Sheraton with a great memory of our junior prom. The senior class gradually filed in between 6:00 and 7:00 After the surprisingly good dinner the dancing began. The seniors filled the dance floor with their own individual dance style. The styles ranged from normal living to the new wide eyed Dave Santos prance. The senior class all joined in the party train as we roamed around the tables and in and out the doors. Senior spirit was evident as the class got a little bit louder now. The time passed quickly and before we knew, it was time to leave. We had a great time, but the partying did not stop there. Spirit Week ’85 was an extra special one for the class of '86 since they were going for their fourth consecutive win. This was a record that had never been reached before in all of S.H.S.’s History. The drive for a victory was evident in the halls on the first day when Seniors dressed as Beach Bums. Underclassmen were giv- ing a competitive spirit as Juniors dressed as different types of occupations, Sophomores as Sport figures, and Freshmen as Tourists. Canned goods started rolling in. (The Seniors were pushing for their fourth win in this event.) The trivia contest took place after school as Mr. R. Ridolfi asked some pretty difficult questions. Sophomores came in 1st, Freshmen 2nd, Juniors 3rd, and Seniors last. Oh well, who said Spirit Week should be judged on intelligence anyway? Tuesday was the start of the competitions in the gym; everyone continued to show their spirit by dressing up once again: Freshmen were tinsel — people; Sophomores — Hawaiians; Juniors — Bums and Bag ladies; and Seniors dominated the halls as partiers. A few complaints were going around when the Seniors were making a little too much noise with their party horns — Seniors will be Seniors!! The gym seemed to be the Hang out of the week. (Now, who gave you permission to be here??) After lunch, the gym began to be filled. But where were the Seniors?? Well, they were lined up in the hall waiting to make their entrance. The music started and The Party Train began. Eric Dantas and Tony Moniz led the train into the gym as the whole Senior class followed, attached onto one another. What a Spirited Sight! The Seniors were victorious in the combined girl- boy competition of the Obstacle Course, as Elisa Warren and Billy Crowley demonstrated their speed and coordination in the treacherous course. A special Congratulations to Elisa for reaching her life-time goal of get- ting the basketball in on the first try! Wednesday, finals were held and the remaining events and the results were: Volleyball — 1st place Sophomores; Basketball — 1 st place Sophomores; Tug of War — 1 st place Senior boys and Sophomore girls; Steal the Bacon — 1st place Seniors. Sophomores won the pie eating contest and Seniors won Simon Says. Students were victorious in He's Sure! Do I have to hit that round thing? V KtSHMEN AREttl the Faculty vs Students Volley- ball game. The Seniors placed first in the canned food drive by an over- whelmingly large margin, but evidently the Seniors were suffer- ing from Senioritis by placing last in attendance. Seniors were voted, by the teachers, as the class with the most spirit since they showed organization in their Party Train, originality in their posters, enthu- siasm in their balloon display of blue and white, and a great amount of Spirit when they chanted “We have Spirit, how 'bout you?”. When the points were tabulated the Seniors were victorious for their fourth time at Seekonk High, a record that will surely sit in the books for a very long time! Go Jo Ann Way to go Seniors! School'Spirit was cooking 75 HOMECOMING ’85 Homecoming of 1985 was the first rally of the year, so the school was filled with spirit and enthusiasm. As the nominees were called down to the gym floor, for the first time in S.H.S. history “King” nominees joined them. At the end of a high-spirited rally the winners were announced. The Home- coming Queen of the class of '86 was Michelle Marek and the King was Jason O'Hara. The court was made up of Freshman, Kristen Hicks and John Larkin; Sophomores, Kati Turner and Steve Gravel; and Juniors, Chris Marchetti and Ron Ricki. Also for the first time a competition was organized for each class to create their own float. They looked “Marvelous as these blue white creations were driven around the football field at half-time. The game ended in a successful win for the Warriors. 76 What's that kid doing? 77 78 Then when I was five ... I can t believe you stepped in that! I never knew he could sing so well! Stable Pitching The Seekonk Baseball team, after winning 8 of their first 9 games, struggled to a 10 and 9 final record. Seniors Aaron Thomas. Mike Masuck and Tom Cosgrove led the brunt of the offensive attack along with underclassmen Rob Hunt. Scott Morin. Scott Miranda and Eric Vandal. Although offensively the Warriors were erratic, the pitching was stable throughout the season. Most prominent was the outstanding hurling of senior Ken Ryan. He was selected to the Sun Chronicle All Star League. His domination of opposing hitters often went unrecognized in defeat but proved again and again to be the key to the Warrior's sucessful year. The team finished the regular season with a fine record of 15-5, as co-champions. Chris Devine, had an excellent year of pitching without any previous ex- perience. She and Dina Cloutier were selected to the Division 2 All-Star Team and The Sun Chronicle All-Star team. Lisa Dutra was selected as the team's most valuable player. Coach Norman Bowlin has high hopes for the 1986 season with the loss of only two players through graduation. Sue Head, and Dina Cloutier are the teams most promising players for the future. MISS GLORIA ISLES — 39 Years of Service — Gloria Isles is that very rare phe- nomenon, the quintessential teacher. She is the prototype of what all of us aspire to be and few ever achieve in our careers. She has been a role model for countless teachers and an inspiration for gen- erations of students. As a fellow teacher said, When I think of Gloria, the words that come to mind are dedication, mastery, hu- man warmth, buoyancy, and com- passion. Again and again these words were echoed by those fortu- nate enough to have taught with her. Teaching is a constant quest for the right approach to make the material more accessible for stu- dents. After thirty-nine years she does not rest on past accomplish- ments but strives each day to find a fresh entry into her students' minds. Each student is a unique challenge and a human being of value. Connections, correlations, and applications are her currency. Guid- ing students to see the simple and the complex is her goal. Age is irrelevant to her students and colleagues when thinking of her. Defining her with a number is pointless. She defies all categoriz- ing — she belongs to each genera- tion she touches because she has never narrowed her parameters. She has vision which conquers and precon- ceptions or trends. Plato says that all ideals exist in the mind. We are mere shadows of that po- tential. Yet we who teach in Seekonk have had the opportunity to experience in Gloria an individual who is as close to the realized ideal as is possible in our profession. The absence of Gloria is going to mean more than just the absence of a gifted math teacher and a beloved colleague. As one teacher who has been her protege describes it — I’ve never come to school without her being here. This school will seem so empty without her presence. Our accomplishments are the brightest of our memories, but foremost among these memories are Mrs. Carol Masuck, and Mr. Thomas Chartier. They have been with us from our first Spirit Week win as freshmen through our Senior Prom, and Graduation. Patience is an under- statement when you think of what was required to work with us on such a variety of projects. Through it all, they were our support and guidance. A Thank You seems like such a small reward for the time and effort they gave us. Due to their help, we have enjoyed phenomonal success for such a small class, in rallys and proms, to name a few. Our class has gained respect and support, and the congratulations goes to our two advisors. It takes rare people to pull a class through four long years. We have been lucky to find these two individuals. Mrs. Masuck and Mr. Chartier, you have our sincerest admiration and respect.
