Paes ee oe ee 176 KEEPERS OF THE STATUS QUO As our senior year passes by and deadlines, both college and yearbook, occupy our attention, we must stop for a moment to thank those who helped to make our high school years the happy experience that they were. I feel, however, that even more than a simple ‘‘thank you,’’ congra- tulations must be offered for taking an indifferent class and making it a success when it was neces- sary. It is in this spirit that we, the class of 1984, dedicate this yearbook to you, Mrs. Helen Keough and Mrs. Marjorie Woodhams. Yet this dedication is not merely a maudlin, though empty sentiment, but a sincere expression of gratitude for countless hours of hard work. But more than that it is a belief in our class as a whole and a friendly relationship with its individual members that makes you, our class advisors, so special. Let us not, however, laud them only for cheery words and giddy encouragements. Their support is honest and tough at times but no matter how dissapointing the outlook, we could always count on them to carry much of the load. If it were not for their hard work and dedication to our class we might have lost our junior prom and some of the other privileges which our apathy endangered. Their concern and planning has also guided us through four spirit weeks even when our earlier spirit level had left much to be desired. Their contributions to our class have also, glad- ly, stretched beyond spirit and drive. They in- clude keeping the activity meetings going, which plan our events, and running the class meetings which inform the rest of us about those events. a Peete: a gpg Siaceeses, Ses We also thank them for being wonderful teachers, chaperones, and friends. The senior class would especially like to extend its gratitude to ‘‘“Mom’”’ for her stewardship of the National Honor Soci- ety. It is in this way that we would like to offer our thanks to our advisors for the tireless guidance of our class which ultimately made this yearbook possible. I hope that this dedication will be a simple statement of gratitude and that it will amply por- tray the sentiments of those people whom I repre- sent. Each of us was filled with anxiety and anticipation for what lie ahead. The anxiety and fear could be seen in our faces ag we ‘attempte | re find our way to classes. We could not, yeliéve the freedom that was granted to’ us. We didn’ t have to walk single file to lunch. and we could a wherever we wanted. of | Our class was not given_any special treatment because we were youne aed if a EW school. We were warned at the beginning of the year by Mr. Dias about the 5% who never grew up and always seemed to get into trouble. Quickly becoming aware of our privileges, we soon fit in with the rest of the crowd. We were young but we caught on fast — discovering that elevator passes weren’t redeemable and that it didn’t matter if we went up the down staircase. We learned that we had the potential to achieve great things, and we were inspired to become involved in Spirit Week.-Tim Bessett led us to a near victory — coming | in a close second to the sophomores. We were ‘simply saving our energy for the next: year. It was a year of growing An change. iene were pleasant, memories and there was dis- sapointing ones as we found out that all under- classmen had to take'final exams. We had to think positively for this experience would help us in our future. The seeds were planted and here we would grow. Our sophomore year had arrived and we were still the same individuals but we had matured. We were not as naive as the freshmen class and wanted our share of the fun and of life. We in- cluded ourselves in morning food fights in the large cafeteria and thousands. of elevator passes were on hand for thémeonma ng freshmen. fit the bill. Despite.the lack 0 thusiasm, our class still tied the seniors-for third place. The grand finale to the Homecoming rally was the first pub- lic appearance by the new cheerleading squad. Seekonk High’s finest was featured except that there was one catch — the squad consisted of all males. In the midst of all this excitement, Gina Ferri became Lisa Fortin’s successor to the throne. We had shown that we were catching on to Seekonk High’s routine and we were given more responsibility. Driver’s Ed. was one of these. This class featured all the excitement one could handle for a day. We saw people with virtually no brains get behind a wheel and drive. Gag me with a spoon, fur surr! That one phrase comes to mind in reflecting on our junior year. Our spirit as a class.had diminished and our new title as jolly upperclassmen hardly fit us. Seniority had gone:to our heads and we were no longer the rowdy freshman class. The reality that we had a lot of work to accom- plish became apparent after receiving our PSAT scores. Those vocabulary words were quite amusing and all you could do was laugh — or cry. Imagine all that hard work just to prepare for the SAT’s! Despite the hard work, one could look forward to Spirit Week and Hopigpoming. Even then we did not show our enthusiasm as ee ass Although we lacked. popularity as a class, we again managed to tie for third place in the Spirit Week competition. Well it was a lot better than last place! We could not let our advisors down again. The prospect of losing our junior prom had made us work a little harder in the Spirit Week competition. It was worth it however, the junior prom was a memorable night. During the remainder of the year many changes came about. Computers invaded the minds of students, a visiting SNe fron Swetlen attended classes and we bluffed our Ewa thro more final exams. | Sw ms : With the start of our atin ro came a rotat- ing schedule as well as SAT’s again. However, there were some changes — Miss Walek became Mrs. Armbrust and Pat-Hartnett became class president. | 5, Senioritis had set in by. the ‘second’ month of school. We wanted to-get our‘lives going but we did not know in which direction to go. The outside world was closing in fast, college applications had to be filled out along with financial aid forms. We weren't little kids anymore and we had to ac- knowledge these responsibilities and accept the challenge. As wallet-size photos were distributed among friends, we could see that we had matured. This reminded us that it. wSildicbe our last year together. We had left our mark in Seekonk High School’s history. We thought it funny that fresh- men were supposed to respect our judgements. We, ourselves, didn’t even ‘know where we were going — how could we give advice to the fresh- men? Well, we enjoyed the seniority although we lied about it a little — the senior year is not as much fun as the underclassmen think. There are a lot of fun times, though, such as the senior sup- per, yearbook distribution day, class night, and the senior prom. However, there are some dis- appointing times such as re ing rejection notices from eltsess and saying good. bye to friends. But all-in-all, the senior year was full of events that will be forever fixed in our minds. WHAT A SUPRISE! For the majority of the class of 1984, our junior prom was our first prom. It was so special because it was the night that we had been looking forward to for months and one that would be held in our memories forever. On this night we were truly special. It’s not often that you see a class of 1984, especially the guys, in this type of garb. It’s amazing how we all made the transformation to long gowns and tuxedos, with class. Needless to say we looked terrific! Getting to the prom was a task in itself — Where is the Coachman anyway?’’ — The directions weren’t clear and finding Tiverton in the rain wasn’t easy. A special thanks to all those we asked for assistance along the way, because we all eventually arrived. There was, however, enough rain to dampen anyone’s spirits but once inside the Cinderella Room we were with our Queen Beth Voyer with her court: Joanne Axile, Kristen friends and all unpleasantries were forgotten — “‘our Kulaga and their escorts. night’’ was underway. Even having our pictures taken with wet hair was not that bad if you took it all in the spirit of fun. Until the food was served most of the girls could be found in the ladies’ room touching up already perfect hair and faces. The guys ... well, they looked very uncomfortable in suits in which they’d once thought you'd never catch them. ‘‘Come on guys, loosen up!!’ When dinner was served the atmosphere lightened and it seemed more like the SHS cafeteria than a classy restaurant — except the food tasted better here because chicken and prime rib are seldom found on the school menu. East Coast Connection finally started to play and they sounded even better than we had thought they would after all. No one was too thrilled with them after our school dance, if you remember. However they surprised us by playing all of our favorites and likewise the guys surprised us by dancing so well. Almost every- one danced and the night seemed to be a terrific suc- . Beth Voyer was then crowned queen while Kris Kulaga and Joanne Axile were honored as mem- bers of her court. The night came to a close — a sad ending yet a new beginning. As we picked up our favors, each of us said a special thanks to Mrs. Woodhams and Mrs. Keough. Without the help of our diligent advisors, our prom wouldn’t have been possible. We left with the feeling that we had accomplished something because we had acted like mature adults and surprised everyone, even ourselves. | _ The manager of the Coachman showed his apprecia- tion to our class for acting so mature by writing a letter to our advisors. Could this be the same class who Sta almost lost their prom? We had changed — at least for a ¥ he ee 8S ee ae that night — and adulthood was just on the horizon. I played football and joined track. I went to Boston University on a football scholarship.”’ Q: What was you first coaching job? A: ‘‘I coached at Westwood High School.”’ Q: How long were you an assistant coach in football? A: ‘‘One year at Westwood High and nine years at Seekonk High.”’ Q: What were the highlights of your years as an assistant coach? A: ‘‘A lot of feelings go through me when I think over nine years of being an assistant. Some of the feelings were just having a good relationship with the young guys. There were kids who thought that they would never make it and did. Those that did make it pushed even harder in college. I guess my true feelings are being glad to be part of a positive development with young guys.”’ Q: How did you feel when you were notified that you were elected as the new Seekonk High School football coach? A: ‘‘I went crazy! A lot of feelings came through. It was not so much a burden or responsibil ity. I felt that I could do the job and I was ready for the position. I was very anxious and wanted to get started right away. I was very anxious about the coaching staff because it was all new. I was very anxious about the players coming back with only two returning starters; it was quite a rebuilding year. I was overjoyed! To have played here, come back to be a coach, and become a head coach was like a dream come true. If I were to die today I would die happy knowing that a lot of things that I wanted to do are being accomp lished.”’ Q: Why did you have so many assistant coaches this year? A: ‘‘Seekonk is one club that has less than any other in Southeastern Mass. We have myself and two paid assis- tants. We have Coach Sloane and Coach McDeed and Coach John Gendron, who is a quarterback coach that volunteered his time. You might have seen other people like Joe Texeira and Mike Tortolani, guys that played for us in te past but have come back with some assistance and some cipay Q: What is your appraisal for the 1983 season? A: ‘‘Jubilant — everyone you talk to — I was shocked but I was very pleased at what they had accomplished. We met like six times during the summer with the coaching staff. I think a great deal of planning went into putting our program together. We knew we had to work very hard to put together a winning team. So ... I was very happy, I was very excited about how everything worked out. In appraisal I have to give these kids an ‘‘A+’’. They had to adapt and adjust toa new staff. I'd give them an ‘ ‘A+’’, Q: What is in store for the future of Seekonk High School football? A: “‘Right now, we’re in the process of getting freshman programs and a lot of them back. As you know we lost freshman football three years ago and we only have one feeder right now and the feeder is the Tiger Football Pre- Team. Only there is one problem: there are boys that come up who are too big to play Tigers and they don’t want to play eae ssid es varsity because they don’t want to get belted around by the varsity ball players, I don’t blame them. On the other hand, the kids that are smaller that you want to see get bigger to play varsity play Tigers and have to keep a certain weight limit to play Tigers. Consequently, we’re stuck in the mid- dle and we have a lot of the guys in the middle of the road that don’t play either. To make a long story short, if we don’t get a freshman program we’re going to be in trouble without a doubt — we’re just not going to be able to com- pete. We’re the last team in Southeastern Mass. that does not have a freshman team — everybody else does. We’re going to need to involve some people.”’ Q: Who were the key members of your team? A: ‘‘Oh, that hurts. They asked me the same question the first game of the season against Attleboro when we tied them in the last seconds of the game. There is no one key person that Ican say. Seekonk is the type of team that everybody has to play 100% and if they don’t we lose — there’s no doubt about it. When you talk about key players from the last kid on the bench to the starting kid on the backfield or in the line, they’re all key people and they all can be pressed into action at anytime. I think I have to say the whole team is a key team.”’ Q: Were any awards received by the team or individual players? A: ‘‘We had three players, Tim Urquhart, Steve Simmons and Al Brown, win All-Conference. That’s an All South- eastern Mass. Conference. We have a number of boys that made the Pawtucket Times. We did alright for a 5-3 and 2 team.”’ Q: If you had to use descriptive adjectives to describe your squad, what would they be? A: ‘‘Aggressive, enthusiastic, exciting. I think the two that we strive for the most is being very aggressive individuals. I think we fielded a very aggressive team this year. In the past years we’ ve had kids known as cardiac kids that come back and win the game. I think we also have an exciting team this heat if we made mistakes we made mistakes trying new things.”’ Q: Were there any outstanding individual accomplishments? A: ‘‘A young bunch of guys gets together with Coach McDeed — outstanding — couldn’t ask more. Coach Sloane — nose guard for us some years back — did a super job, I couldn’t ask any more from him. Coach Gendron — a guy not even getting paid, spending five days a week of his own time coming down — it’s just unbelievable. I have to give him the outstanding award for doing it for me. Like the old saying says: you’re only as good as the people you have working under you; boy, I tell you, I had a good crowd working under me.”’ Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add? A: “‘I think we’re building a program at Seekonk. I think people are starting to be aware that its more than just football being taught out there. I think the guys are coming out of it with a better attitude and a positive attitude. I think the community is viewing football as a more positive activi- ty. There is a lot more community support among the team. — If we can’t support our own team, who will?”’ | | Sports Speak Out What do you think are the strengths and or weaknesses of Seekonk High School’s sports program? Mr. O. Leclerc, Athletic supervisor: ‘ T think that our sports program is strong because of the number of dedicated athletes and the support that exists between the teams. However, I think some improvements could be made in the scheduling of facilities and in the freshman programs.”’ Mr. R. Ridolfi, Coach: ‘‘The reason for the tremendous success of the athletic program can be directly attributed to the dedication and the quality of the athletes present at Seekonk High. Without this main ingredient, Seekonk could never have achieved the distinction of being one of the most successful programs in the Commonwealth.”’ Chris Benoit, Class of 1984: ‘The athletic program is beneficial to all who participate. Seekonk is a factor in every game or meet. The interscholastic programs allow us to meet new people and to bring out our spirit of competition.” Mr. R. Perreault, Guidance Counselor: ‘ The women’s teams continue to be very good. The boys’ teams seem to work extraordinarily hard but, in some instances, haven’t shown this. It seems that there is, for the most part, a very close relationship between the players and the coaches. I’m not sure that is the case in most schools.”’ Mr. R. Dias, Principal: ‘ T think there are no weaknesses and many strengths. For example, last year we received the Dalton Award, which indicates that out of seventeen sports activities we won nine team championships and there were two individual track championships. Our youngsters and coaches give a total commitment in making us so competitive and successful in our conference.” Mr. R. Kulaga, Coach: ‘‘Our weakness is a lack of experience coming into the high school due to lack of feeders, especially in girls’ sports. Our strength is probably the high percentage of the student body that participates. It gives us a good number from which to choose.”’ Kris Gossler, Class of 1984: ‘‘The strengths are the coaches; if it weren’t for their enthusiasm, the athletes would not show their full potential. There is a lot of positive emphasis on sports. Unfortunately, not all the sports are taken seriously enough. Intramurals are lacking terribly. There isn’t one intramural sport that everyone is really enthused about.”’ Chris Fiore, Class of 1985: ‘ T feel that it is a fairly well-organized system. Our football team has the potential to be the league champion. The swim team and girls’ track have outstanding records. I think that we should have wrestling as an interscholastic sport and also reinstitute karate. Almost all of our players do their best and we usually do well in all of our different sports.’ Jennifer Giblin, Class of 1984: The sports program has weaknesses due to the lack of allocated funds. The parents and athletes have to pay $30 each season to participate. Yet, there is no question that Seekonk has a super sports program. Unlike other schools where you have to try out for all teams, we have teams to which everyone can belong. The coaches are great and are interested in us as students and people, not just as athletes. Participation helps you make a lot of friends, celebrate achievements, learn to deal with dissapointment, and learn to respond positively under pressure. Mostly, you realize that if you work hard enough, you can achieve virtually any goal you set for yourself.”’ Mrs. S. Wing, Coach: ‘‘T think that one of the strengths is the committment of the student body and of the administration to having strong sports teams.”’ Kim Pellerin, Class of 1984: ‘ T think the weakness is having to pay to play and having to run fund raisers. That’s not what sports is about. I think that’s really the only weakness that we have. We have a lot of strengths. We have good athletes for a small school. We also have a tremendous program and good facilities.”’ 141 142 = = — ae Z. bal oe ea = 143 Tt + CHAPTER VI = | REGULATING THE CASH FLOW -inassere, siidieg nr Seuhin deeorandinorieafie)): atime to Earn 1899 S4Sb GOLD PATRONS Missy, Best Wishes Cynthia Healy Best Wishes class of °84.
