In the tradition of the Class of ’80, it was a night that most will never forget but some will never remember!! After precariously ascending the winding staircase and admiring the famous chandelier, everyone congregated around the fountain of spiked punch. The momentary contain caused by the lack of a seating arrangement was soon dispelled as the class ate a “sumptuous” meal. The disc jockey, J. C., discouraged dancing during the meal, despite much enthusiasm. The fun really began when “permission was anted” to dance. Ironically, the people who liked disco at the Class meeting Wednesday couldn’t resist dancing it Thursday night. Many people were satarically honored for their talents or handicaps. Joyce Hendricks received the “Mr. Murphy Pushover Award.” The “Miss Congeniality-Crest Test” was awarded to Laurie Curry, while Lee Hunt received the “Man in the Moon” award. Bob Bizier was given “Mr. Ridolfi Look- Alike” and Mike Bessette was presented the “Wildest and Craziest Guy” award. Among other awards were the “Farrah Fawcett Look-Alike” presented to Sue Theoret, the “Parallel Parking Award” to Janice Rosa, and the “Mac Davis Look- Alike” to Greg George. The final award of the evening went to Kathy Tamer who received a special “Prayer Award.’ Senior portraits, football Rane Spirit Week, college applications and now the Senior Supper — all indicate that the senior year for the Class of ’80 is passing quickly. Activities 87 The Class It took three days to make it official but the Class of 1980 was victorious for the third consecutive time setting a new school record in 1979 Spirit Week competition. The Trivia Contest occurred Monday after school in the auditorium. The Freshman were given a 15 point handicap and were subsequently victorious, while the Seniors, lacking a handicap, came in a very close second. The Sophomores and Juniors took third and fourth places respectively. The Seniors turned a cold day in November into asummer day in August by designating Monday “Beach Day.” The Juniors revealed their true identities by becoming Flashers while the Sophomores came as themselves — of 80 Sets an All-Time Record DRUNKS... There was much confusion in the Freshman Class when the girls dressed as boys and the boys dressed as girls. The athletic events commenced Monday with preliminaries in Tug of War, Volleyball, and Basketball. The Sophomores were victorious in the combined girl-boy competition of the o bstacle course. The dress codes were changed again with the Seniors anticipating the 80’s as clones. “Live from Seekonk,” it was the Juniors as wide-ends. At the same time the Sophomores stressed the energy problem by coming as Arabs and the Freshmen treated it with humor by “clowning around.” Wednesday, finals were held in the remaining events and the results were: Volleyball — first place Juniors; Basketball — first place Freshmen; Tug of War — first place Senior girls and Junior boys. The “Get dressed quick” relay was won by the Seniors. The Junior class advisors came in first ina violent game of musical chairs. The Senior class placed first in the Salvation Army Food Drive and in keeping with the tradition of Senioritis, placed last in attendance. Although the Seniors seldom came in first in the athletic events, their tremendous amount of spirit led them to victory. 3 hall Se The Jolly Junior Freak out!! ti “T’ll see you at 8 tonight Mike.” Dave lends his helping hand. .S : Ay Pa 3 7 ° il sy ‘ ¥ 4 ts é ks il The class of ’83 clowns around. One day each week, a senior is allowed to work at a volunteer organization or become involved in a possible career choice as his Independent Study project. Special meetings are held during the year for students to experience a different part of life by hearing the stories of former drug addicts and ex-convicts. This program gives seniors an opportunity to examine their own personal values in rela- tionship with those of others before they venture out into the real world. Participants in the program must meet peri- odically with their advisor, Guidance Coun- selor Justus Andersom, and must submit a term paper on their experiences at the termi- nation of the program in order to receive five credits. Their 9-9 overall record and 7-7 in division play, placed them fourth in the South- eastern Massachusetts Division II Con- ference play, exactly what Coach Ridolfi predicted. Led by All-Leaguers Rick Sousa, Gary Najas and Glen Larrabee, the Warriors started slow but gained momentum later in the season. “If the season was longer they would have done better,” said Ridolfi. Pitchers Mike Jennings, Todd Hagen- burg and Martin Larotunda, ’79 gradu- ates, finished strong to help the Warri- ors to their 9-9 record. Infielders Paul LaFrance, Glen Larra- bee, Bob Drapeau, Steve Burke and catchers Mark Rogers, Craig Mace and Joe Frisolone played exceptionally well, H e the number of team errors to ive. The girls evidenced a variety of skills and talents but these weren’t quite enough in face of their tough competi- tion. Co-captains Gina Staltare and Cheryl Dutra gave the team the confidence and determination they needed to help them through difficult games. Additional strength was given by Ginny Sykes and Cindy Hurd. The outfielders Pam Jack- son, Becky Stephanopoulos and Gina Staltare played very well making it tough for the opposition to score. Also, itchers Gina Mayo, Joan Casey, and eDe Mulhall intimidated the batting opposition. As a whole, the team played well together, bettering their ’78 season’s record. The upcoming softball season looks promising with returning veteran Seniors Gina Mayo, Carolyn Hicks, and Wendy Lima. Also returning are Laurie Sloane, Cindy Hurd, Cindy Stephano- poulos, and Missy McAloon. Spring Sports 149 Boys’ Track Runs to Victory The 1979 Boys’ Track Team had one of its best seasons in recent history: 5-1 in ata II for a second place, 7-2 over- all. Besides senior Doug Brown, who tied the school record of ten flat in the hun- dred yard dash, the Warriors were led by the brilliance of juniors Chris Harri- son and Marc Fain. Harrison paced the long distance runners with mid-nine minute times in the two mile and a school record of 4:30.6 in the mile run. Fain likewise ran well turning in times in the low fifties in the 440-yard dash. Other members of the team that per- formed well include seniors Mike li - nard (880 and high jump), Ed Perron low hurdles, pole vault), Mark Baldoni high hurdles), and junior Joe Teixeira javelin, triple jump, 100-yard dash, 220- yard dash). If this year’s underclassmen improve as expected, the 1980 season could be a banner year for the Warriors. Their well earned record of 10 wins and 8 losses was attributed to the team’s enthusiastic attitude and hard work all season. A tough break in the weather kept the girls from a well deserved place in the States. Leading the team to a winning season were the Sullivan twins, Liz and Pat, playing first and second singles respec- tively. Adding strength to Seekonk’s driving force were teammates Colleen Carden and Meg McGovern playing third singles, and Joan Couris and Dar- lene Paul, playing first doubles. Lone senior Jon Baker and juniors Victor Szala and Gregg MacDonald as well as Ue Carlton Rutter also played well. Borah was the Bourne Invitational Jam- boree champ and he also placed first in the Southeastern Massachusetts High School Championship; Ray Christopher placed third in this tournament as well. Undiscouraged by last year’s record, the girls started the sea- son with enthusiasm. They lea rned true sportsmanship with the guidance of their new coach, Melinda Edgerly (Pierce). She noted the remarkable progress that they had made since the beginning of the season and believed that they had, in her own words, “come a long way.” She also cited that the team had a great attitude, dis- played teamwork, and demonstrated effort. Unfortunately, the team is losing six seniors: Gina Mayo, Carolyn Hicks, Lele Murphy, Linda Rufful, Janice Bardsley, and Karen Jensen. Although this loss is great, the team appears optimistic with the return of veterans Terri Torino, Cindy Hurd, and Cindy Paine, as the starting lineup. Page 157: (1) “Good Game”? The boys showed their strength and team unity by winning the traditional Thanksgiving game over rival Dighton- Sree with a comeback victory score of 14-10. Leading the team to a winning season were Tri-Captains Joe Teixeira, Bob Bizier, and Mike Bessette, along with seniors Mike LaMothe, Scott Graham, Lee Hunt, Paul Hildred, Greg Deeb, and Rick Carderelli. Also playing well were Dave Ciszkowski, Barry De lasio, Mike Eva, Tim Gaucher, Andy Dubuc, and Stan Howard. The male Warriors were led by the “out- standing” performance of senior Chris Harrison. fecon placed first in the Conference and Class meets but slipped and fell on a wet course in the State meet, destroying his chance to take the first place in that meet. This, however, did not stop him from being named to the All-State team. Also helping to pace the Warriors to their five victories were junior Joe Reddington and senior Joe urns. The outstanding runner on this year’s girls’ squad was sophomore Kris Giblin, who, along with senior stars Joanne Sincero and Mary Beth Giblin, Kris’ sis- ter, helped to bring home a first place in the Conference meet for a fifth straight ear. Kris was also named to the All- tate team making this the first time a member of both the girls’ and boys’ teams were named to the All-State in the same year. His girls swam to a 7-3 overall record and a 6-2 Southeast- ern Massachusetts Conference record, earning them a second place finish. The reason for the great performance this season, according to Wallace, was “the girls’ attitude, they believed they were as good as any team in the state.” This belief is evidenced in the all star performances of senior Kim Halkyard, junior Donna Olivier, and freshmen Sara McGovern and Chris Fischer, who were named to the All-Conference team. McGovern set records in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle and Fischer was tops in the 500. The 200 yard Medley Relay Team and the 400 yard Medley Relay Team also set school records. This year’s stellar performance is only a preview of the coming years according to coach Wallace. The depth of the team, which is only losing one senior, Kim Halkyard, assures the Warriors of future success. Page 164: (1) Row 1: M. Matonis, S. Hildred, S. McGovern, S. Hess, Row 2: C. Arrighi, H. The boys came back from a slow start to end their dual meet season at 5-5. They were led by seniors Chris Harrison and Mare Fain, in the two mile and sprints respectively, and the performance of junior John Larotonda in the shot-put. The girls had a “super season,” according to Coach Frank Mooney. They were undefeated in dual meets with an 8-0 record and they took the state Indoor Track title as well as the State Relay Championship. Their State track title was their fifth in a row; this is an unprecedented feat in girl’s track in Massa- chusetts. The girl’s season culminated when the team of Joanne Sincero, Mary Beth Giblin, Kathy McGovern, and Kris Giblin broke the national high school record in the two-mile relay. Their record was not acknowledged, however, because of a judge’s ruling which claimed that anchor runner Joanne Sincero had drop- ped the baton before crossing the finish line. The Boston Globe named Coach Mooney Coach of the Year and commented that the success of both teams “can be traced directly to Mooney, who oversees the operation.” Page 174: (1) “Over it Gary, not through it!”; (2) Mork comes to Seekonk.
