In the past four years we have witnessed many changes in the world around us, but more importantly we have noticed the changes within ourselves. Throughout our lives the passage of time will hold many opportunities and challenges. Although we will continue to grow and develop, there will still be a part of our lives that will remain here forever. In our yearbook we hope to capture the fleeting moments that otherwise would be erased by the sands of time. Through our words and pictures, we wish to express what we feel symbolizes a small portion of the passage of time. z 9 = ” .°) a ot uJ rr) = ios Throughout our four years in Seekonk High School, you have given us so much and taken so little in return. We began as inexperienced and insecure individuals. With your attention and guidance you have united our class into adults who are ready to face the future and accept life’s challenges. The amount of time you have spent on our activities has not gone unappreciated. As our advisors, your constant loyalty has been never- ending. With our deepest admiration, we would like to dedicate our yearbook to two friends who we will long remember, Mrs. Margaret Cassels and Mrs. Sally Wing. rua? AG ab Thank You for Being a Friend Thank you for being a friend — traveled down the road and back again, — Your heart is true — you're a pal and a confidant. — I'm not ashamed to say — | hope it always will stay this way. — My hat is off — won't you stand up and take a bow. Thank you for being a friend. — If it's a car — you lack, I'd surely buy you a Cadillac. What ever you need any time of the day or night. — I'm not ashamed to say — I hope it always will stay this way. — My hat is off — won't you stand up and take a bow. — (And when we both get older with walkin’ canes and hair of gray, we'll have no fear — even though it's hard to hear | will stand real close and say) — Thank you for being a friend — Reason and calm judgment are the qualities especially belonging to a leader. hae. Scattered pictures — of the smiles we left behind, smiles we gave to one another for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we? Could we’? Mem'ries may be beautiful, and yet, what's too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget. So it's the laughter we will remember, whenever we remember the way we were; the way we were. 41 ePBPINY JIQqOY OSIAPY SUIUUPW UlUoy 4a4sNSPOd | SIUOJEW Ud]SI :AdR}IIIIS IJIJOUDIC PION] :JUAPISAdd IIIA UNOMSOG 1}09S :JUuapPISaid 42 Lto R, Row 1: B. Do you like the things that life is showing you? — Where are you going to, — do you know? Once we were standing still in time, chasing the fantasies that filled our minds. — And you know — how I loved you, but — my spirit was free, laughing at the questions that you once asked of me. — Do you get — what you're hoping for? When you look behind you there's no open door. — What are you hoping for, — do you know? Once now looking back at all we planned, we let so many dreams — just slip through our hands. Why must we wait so long — before we see how sad the answers to those questions can be? — eh ko wae peer - Schedule © | Stand Se pt.a3 Nev. 20-22 OD Tan.av af FOR YOU TO MEET COLLEGE AD ._.REPRESE MISSIONS une | a Aco TATIVES ' ODE ISLAND REGION AL EGE FAIR June Oct. 13 | only afew vents for this year. Never Forgotten Love Ya Mom, Dad, Relatives, True Friends 101 Once upon a time we were young and unaware of the purposes that life would bring us. Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny played an important role in our lives. Reading, writing, and arithmetic were our daily lessons and recess was the best part of the day. As we grew, so did our world. We visited new places and made new friends. Grammar school became a mere memory, as our junior high school days descended upon us. Segregated cafeterias, lockers, and our first dances were all part of our new world. Next came the frightening experiences of our first day at high school. A juke box in study and elevator passes were all new developments during our first year. By scoring 44 goals in a single season, another school record was broken by the team. Several individual records were also broken. In the State Finals, Seekonk and Scituate were tied during the game with a score of 2-2. This record, however, did not reflect the team’s true effort. A mere ten points decided three of the four defeats. The most heart-breaking loss came midway through the season against Somerset, where a determined Seekonk team was edged out by two points. The 1978 season ended on an impressive note with Seekonk shutting out arch- rival Dighton-Rehoboth, 15-45. Unfortunately, the Warriors are losing many fine seniors, but the - coaching talents of Frank Mooney promise many opportunities for a successful season next year. The Girls’ Cross-Country team, continued a long string of successful seasons, finishing first in their class for the fourth straight year, and seventh in Eastern State Competition. Games with Bellingham, Old Rochester, East Providence, Woonsocket, and King Philip gave the Warriors a cross- section of hockey style from six different leagues. In their debut, the disciplined and hard-working Warriors totally embarrassed pre-season favorite, and arch-rival, D-R with a 6-0 victory. The team then went on to post fifteen consecutive victories and one tie without sustaining a loss. In Southeastern Massachusetts Division Il Conference play, Seekonk finished undefeated with a unprecedented 11-0-1 record to win the division championship. The Warriors’ overall season record, including state playoffs, was an impressive 18-3-3. In state playoffs, Seekonk defeated Oliver Ames in sudden death overtime but their next game, fell 7-6 to Lynnfield, one of the strongest teams in the state. Among the honors tallied by the team include four players being selected to the All Star Team and area newspapers choosing six players to their All Star Teams. Coach Clarke was cited as ‘Coach of the Year” for 1978- 1979. The 1978-1979 Hockey Team brought SHS a Championship which will always be remembered as the first for Seekonk Hockey. i = J ee — PAGE 158: Row 1: L-R: R. Voccio, S. Arruda, M. Alburn, S. Co-Captain Mark Bowers, a returning starter, and Co-Captain Glen Larabee were the only players with substantial court time on the squad. During the first three weeks of the season, the Warriors won five of six non-league games; this was a strong indication that they would be competitive in league play. Led by the outstanding play of Mark Bowers, the Varsity won five of seven games during the first half of league competition. David DiOrio and Glen Larabee made large contributions from their guard positions while being ably supported by Craig Mace, Steven Burke, Greg Greene, and Mark Rogers from their forward positions. In State Competition, the Warriors were one short of the playoffs being edged out of that berth by Feehan, the reigning Southeastern Massachusetts Division Il Champs. Coach Donald Carey feels that this season establishe d a foundation upon which the team can build. The diligent JV team played spirited basketball throughout the season with their 7-13 record not being a true reflection of their efforts. The leading scorers for the season were Tim Alcorn and Shaun Costello. Excellent ball handling was turned in by Glenn Hamlin, Peter Gilbert and Rick Murphy. Strong rebounding by Paul Beauregard, Joe Reddington, and Roger Greene contributed substantially. “A good sign for the future,” commented Coach Robert Perrault. Senior Gail Lagerquist received the Total Team Player Award while Junior Liz Murphy showed outstanding performances in becoming Seekonk’s high scorer with 261 points for the season. Robin Perry, along with Murphy, qualified for the Sun Chronicle All Stars, as well as the All-Stars League All Conference. Junior Liz Sullivan improved greatly during the season and seniors Gina Staltare and Ginny Sykes proved to be valuable to the team as overall players. Playing in the quarter finals, Seekonk showed extra strength and determination but lost to Rockland with a heartbreaking score of 48-47. The boys defeated last year’s Indoor Track Champs, Taunton, and the Distance Medley Team placed first at the State Coaches’ Relays. Both feats contributed to the season being the most successful in recent years. Attaining a perfect record, the Girls’ Indoor Track team captured the league title. The Mile Relay Team set a new record at the Coaches’ Invitational and then went on to take first place at the State Coaches” Relays. The team peaked with its many strong performances earning them recognition at the Class B Indoor State Champs, a title which they well deserve. The Indoor Track Team proved to their competition that they are formidable opponents and are not to be underestimated in the years to follow. The Warriors finished their 1979 dual meet season with a perfect 9-0 record and were 8-0 in the Greater Boston Interscholastic Swimming League’s Southern Conference. Their victories included easy wins over Middleboro, Westwood, Durfee, Taunton, Milford, New Bedford, and Randolph, and two impressive victories over state power Gardner (87-85) and conference rival Attleboro (91-81). The swim team’s campaign also included victories in the two major Rhode Island swimming championships: Brown Interscholastics and the Max Read Memorial Championships. On the local scene, the Warriors placed first in the Southeastern Massachusetts Swimming Competition. In the Massachusetts State Swimming and Diving Championships, the Warriors swam very well and placed third in a field of sixty-three teams. An unbelievable effort from all swimmers involved allowed the team to accomplish the ultimate goal, placing first in the New England Swimming and Diving Championships, thus making them the 1979 New England Champs. The Boston Globe has recognized the Warrior swimmers by naming John Ackell, Shaun Dolan, John Kaczowka, Brian Dolan, Brian Seeley, and Chip Swanson to the All-Scholastic swimming team. In addition, Coach Ellis Mayers was named Swim Coach of the Year. The golf team’s wins included impressive victories over Durfee, Coyle-Cassidy, Bishop Connelly and Westport, all having scores with wide margins. There were some disappointing losses, namely to arch-rival Dighton Rehoboth, Bishop Feehan, and Attleboro. Although the team lost an excellent player, state finalist Dan Smith, there are players from last year’s team who will jump into the first six positions and, hopefully, enjoy the best season they will ever have. Although the record was 9-8 in league and non- league play, the ability of the team was not truly reflected. The players showed a variety of skills and talents but it just wasn’t enough for the strong competition they faced. The game against Case High was a come-from behind win for up until the last inning the score had been 3-5. In the ninth, Seekonk tallied three runs to edge a6-5 victory. The Seekonk-D.R. game was yet another close one, tie until the last inning when D.R. captured the final win by stealing home plate in the ninth. Seekonk has never defeated D.R. and this year Seekonk feels confident they will beat them to break their losing streak. Co-captains Sue Armstrong and Ton! Barone helped the squad through many difficult games and gave the players the confidence and determination which they needed. This season, the returning players should be a better team unit, with co- captains Gina Staltare and Chery! Dutra, for they have played together for at least one year and have some experience on the varsity level. The offensive powers of this team were quite unique. With a team batting average of over .300, Seekonk scored an average of 12 runs per game. Due to their outstanding play, Joe Sousa, Dave Mitchell, Jon and Paul Bowen were selected to the All League team. A highly successful 10-4 team record was compiled in the S.E. Mass. Division II West to make the State playoffs. Seekonk defeated Oliver Ames 6-4 but lost a heartbreaking 8-7 game to Fairhaven in the playoffs. Seekonk defeated arch rivals Dighton Rehoboth twice. Jon Bowen led the pitchers with a record of 7-3 while pitchers Todd Hagenburg and Ed Medeiros combined for the other five WINS. Joe Sousa, Gary Najas, Glenn Larrabee and Chris Lima also represented Seekonk as part of an All Star team who participated in the Big League World Series in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in August 1978. Seekonk looks to continue its winning way this season with a good nuclei of underclassmen. PAGE 172: (1) “Dustbowl”; (2) “Lunch was never so good” (3) “Casper”; (4) Larrabee ok’s the play. The Girl’s Outdoor Track team was a balance of field event participants and runners, dispelling the rumor that Seekonk only produces runners. The season was undefeated partially as a result of the contribution of the shotputters, discus throwers, and javelin throwers. Combining this with a strong team effort of runners, we were able to capture second place in the highly competitive Falmouth Invitational. The Mile Relay team hoped for a state record and a trip to the New Englands in Vermont. This goal was achieved, but the victory was bittersweet, for in the next heat another team bettered our record and went on to represent Massachusetts. The season, as a whole, was a great success and in the words of Coach Wing “an outstanding team with lots of talent and spirit”. Spring Sports 175 Injury hampered team triumphs Despite the numerous injuries which plagued the Seekonk Boys’ Track Team, the Warriors enjoyed an outstanding season. The team, comprised predominantly of underclassmen, combined their efforts for a 6-3 league record. After nearly a month of practice, the season began with a close loss to a strong Attleboro team. As the season progressed, however, the young Warriors rolled over Somerset, 104-41 and Coyle Cassiday 109%2-35%. They now had momentum and were victorious in their next three meets against St. Rapheal’s Academy, Dighton- Rehoboth, and Diman Vocational, before finishing the season with two losses against Bishop Feehan and Taunton. — With the dual meet season finished, the team looked forward to State and Divisional competition, where they finished fifth in the Class D Relays and fourth in Southeastern Mass. Division One. The outstanding runners of the season were Marc Fain and League All-Star members Mark Baldani and Chris Harrison. The majority of the runners will be returning this year, when the Warriors will be looking forward to another fine season. The Boys’ Tennis team was composed of several excellent players, led by seniors Keenan Hagenburg, Ernie Madden, and Andy Hartnett; and juniors Paul Smith and John Couris. The match against an impressive and experienced Attleboro team displayed many outstanding individual performances. Wins against Bishop Feehan, Taunton, Durfee and Dighton-Rehoboth also showed Seekonk’s versatile talents. They had a slow start with two disappointing losses to atough Durfee team and an undefeated Attleboro team. From that point on, they were on a winning streak. One of their surprising victories came late in the season when they reversed their loss to an undefeated Attleboro team by a score of 3 to 2. By the end of the season, novice Coach, Chery! Wilson, had rallied the squad to an impressive record of 14 wins-2 losses. Contributing to the success of the season were co-captain Dot DiOrio, who played first singles, and Liz and Pat Sullivan, playing second and third singles respectively. First, doubles played by Joan Couris and Darlene Paul, and second doubles played by Meg McGovern and Sue Burrows rounded out the team. Due to the determination and enthusiasm of everyone involved, the team enjoyed a winning season.
