Seekonk Public Library 410 Newman Ave Seekonk, MA 02771 1 Come gather round people wherever you roam, And admit that the waters around you have grown And accept that soon you’ll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you is worth saving, Then you’d better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a changin’. Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide — the chance won’t come again. And don’t speak too soon for the wheel’s in spin And there’s no telling who that it’s naming For the loser now will later win, For the times they are a changin’. 5 tm TE 9 i — Come mothers and fathers throughout % For the times they are a changin’. BEING BUT MEN Being but men, we walked into the trees Afraid, letting our syllables be soft For fear of waking the rooks, For fear of coming Noiselessly into a world of wings and cries. If we were children we might climb, Catch the rooks sleeping, and break no twig, And, after the soft ascent Thrust out our heads above the branches To wonder at the unfailing stars. Out of confusion, as the way 1s, And the wonder that man knows, Out of the chaos would come bliss. That, then is loveliness, we:-said, Children in wonder watching the stars, Is the aim and the end. Being but men, we walked into the trees. Si %. - ig hee + 4 Ae . a a. And if we won only say thanks in simpler words — a nod or a smile or the infinite understanding of our deepest appreciation; we certainly would. Though if our nod does not suffice, or our smile does not glisten as hoped, We dedicate in material and with our love, this book. We hope you receive it well — we had always planned it that way . Peer in the water Over the boat’s edge; seek the sky’s night-heart; Are they near, are they far, those clouds, those stars Given, reflected, pooled? Are they so close For a hand to clasp, to lift them, feel their shape, Explore their reality, take a rough possession? Oh no! too delicate, too shy for handling, They tilt at a touch, quiver to other shapes Dance away, change, are lost, drowned, scared; Hands break the mirror, speech’s crudity The surmise, the divining; Such things so deeply held, so lightly held, Subtle, imponderable, as stars in water Or thoughts in another’s thoughts. Are they near, are they far, those stars, that knowledge? Deep? shallow? solid? rare? The boat drifts on, And the litten candle single in the prow, The small, immediate candle in the prow, Burns brighter in the water than any star. Kahil Gibran “AJright, Miss Dobie, move over a little more to the left.” “Now we know who stole all the sour pickles.” Expecting a flood, Joanne? . . . And we are more than we think. We are more than we know. That which is more than we think and know is always seeking and adding to itself while we are doing nothing — or think we are doing nothing. But to be conscious of what is going on in our depth is to help it along. When sub-consciousness becomes consciousness, the seeds in our winter-clad selves turn to flowers, and the silent life in us sings with all its might. Kahil Gibran 172 Is he smoking or did he catch a firefly? Memory Everyone has experienced that truth: that love, like a run- ning brook, is disregarded, taken for granted; but when the brook freezes over, then people begin to remember, how it was when it ran, and they want to run it again. There were days of fun, And days of aching thought, making life a challenge of everlasting change. But now the mold has shifted; We have changed from the wandering youth into the knowledgeable seekers of life. Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime And, departing, leave behind us, Footprints on the sands of time.
