SEEKONK HIGH SCHOOL | SEEKONK | MASSACHUSETTS Dedication Norman W. Baker We, the class of 1970, were very fortunate to have as our yearbook and class advisor a fine friend and excellent educator. Outstand- ing and helpful as a teacher, he extended his assistance beyond his obligation by giving un- selfishly of his time to our class. Such a man is very rare. Realizing this fact, the class of 1970 is pleased to express its sincere thanks by dedi- cating the fourth edition of Reflections to Mr. Norman W. Baker. Class Reunion It’s the year 1990 and to celebrate their twentieth anniversary, the graduating class of 1970 is holding one of it’s infamous parties at the home of Audrey Gouras. Frank Labreche is bouncing his basketball across the liv- ing room floor. Mildred Leiter, RN, is administering first aid to the minor injuries Paul Duffell just sustained in his fight with Steve DeSilva over the last high school football game. Bob Fiero seems to be following his Uncle Frank’s footsteps, and is now employed as Head Custodial Engineer of Seekonk High. Rick Longbottom is fast asleep on the couch after listening to aged Omer Leclerc ramble on for hours about all the “hanky panky” taking place at the party. Paul Lucchesi is back from his recent trip to Italy and has brought to the party some of his Roman “pen pals.” The entertainment is being provided by John Warrener singing “The Impossible Dream,” and is accom- panied by musical Missy Scott on the harp and the bassoon. After this selection, Bob Adams staggers up to the microphone and sings “Can’t Get Enough of that Sugar Crisp” in tune with Carol Butterworth and her French horn. Jeff LaCroix just threw his famous curve ball into the punch, which stains Winnie Snape’s dress. And there goes Mark Harrison running past the house and missing the party. | | A crowd has begun to gather in the middle of the room as Cliff Laushway d emonstrates his famous sit- down jump. Behind him Sylvia Brackett waits with her needle and thread to repair any possible damage. Cheering Cliff on are Cheryl Wilson and Sue White, while attempting to do a pyramid. Stephanie Spiegel has temporarily retired to the bathroom to change Billy Junior’s diapers. Rachel Howitt makes her entrance asking everyone “How are you, Darling?” Criminal Lawyer Tedd Povar has captured a small group of classmates and is currently explaining to each of them that all well-rounded and successful men have collections of at least 9,999 multicolored silk ties imported directly from China. Con- cerned Carlene Thode adds to the conversation by stating that Donna Andrews looks quite chic and mod with her new hair style. Everyone notes that Elaine Royer has not changed a bit. Her sincerity and deep concern for others shows again as she tried to explain to Linda Mancini and Mary Miguel that Phyllis is not Miss Dobie’s real name. Gary Tracey, Rick Bliss, and Eddie Emond can be found in the kitchen nibbling on hors d’oeuvres while re- citing the past perfect tense of an irregular Spanish verb. Norma Banna, Bettie Manchester, and Marilen Phil- brook are busily chattering by the door about the latest Parisian wigs. Jackie Dubuc is trying to convince Jaye Duffy that she shouldn’t feel guilty about her past behavior in gym class. John Hulme is setting up a concession stand selling swim trunks to Steve Sherman. Kris Oswald is seen bribing Beau Mirando to write a love sonnet for Cindy Kistner. Susie Cabassa and Rick Dobras are crawling along the floor looking for a contact lens. The Viau twins have notified everyone that they married the Master twins and are named the Viewmasters. Robin Hargreaves is auditioning for the play “Hair,” and could not attend. A fight has started in the driveway as Charlie Kane and Bill Woodside argue over who parks Pat Dolan’s car. Paul Hardman, in his black leather jacket, has just announced his recent appointment as leader of the Seekonk Chapter of Hell’s Angels. Mark Voorhees is still in his sweat pants because he came directly from his job as head coach of the High School football team. Danny Ahern is keeping busy syphoning gas out of all the cars outside. Kenny Chasse now towers over the group. Anne Venditti just walked in with her portable skating rink. Kathy Estrella carries with her an album of AWOL sheets. Influenced by the teaching of Mr. Corriveau, Ray Blackledge has become a chemist and is trying to sell his new dye to Matt Fahey. This miraculous invention not only covers grey hair but also adds a tint of redness to it. On his way in, Randy Jordan just tripped over Robin Shields, who has fallen asleep in the bushes. Dave Bel- lenoit has returned from his trip to Las Vegas, where he struck it rich. It looks like Peter Kerr has hit Sal’s again; his coats are getting longer and longer. It was announced that Carol Boudreau could not attend be- cause of present employment as hostess of the Grist Mill. Barbara Charette, Wanda Wilson, Johanna Veader, and Judy Stellmach are combing the room for a lost compact. While playing hop-scotch, Kathy and Peggy Goggin fell down and Nu rse Betsy Young is patching up their knees. Mary Mitchell, Corinne Mallon, and Pat Dalton are blowing bubbles in a corner. Daphne Dauray is outside looking for her lost Latin Vocabulary. Marsha Dodd has been elected chaperone and official bouncer. Just for the record, she bounced out Tom Sagar, Bob Harrop and Don Bricault. Stanley Bienkiewicz enters wearing his Mu Alpha Theta jacket. Barbara Drohan has turned out the lights, blowing a fuse in the process, and Dave Soucy looms out of the darkness to replace it. b) 5| On his way down to the cellar, Dave stumbles over Carole Redlund, Shirley McGovern, and Elaine Shaw playing jacks on the stairs. Cheryl Jones, Bettie Humphrey and Maureen Medeiros complain about problems of married life and exchange recipes. Ed Gonsalves is in the kitchen doing sculpture for $25 a head and Linda Correia is drawing murals at $10 a foot. Jimmy Souza can be seen intercepting Pat Tameo’s pass. Karen Barney is radiant because everyone is get- ting to know each other at this little get-together. Joe Gouveia can be found in the den explaining the disad- vantages of a Volkswagen’s bucket seats to Sue Machado, who has gone from giggling to blushing in one easy step. Mike Silva has brought all his Beatles’ Albums and Paul Dubuc, Jim Korkuc, and Joe Kusiak are still de- bating whether or not Paul McCartney is really alive or dead. Eddie Sirois is trying to organize a square dance, but the only available participants are Kathy Fleming and Chris Tavares. There is quite a bit of reminiscing about those Senior Studies. Stan Szczepanek is trying to con- vince Steve Perry and Dan Perreira that he really did make a fortune by gambling in those Old Maid games. Gary Lariviere and Joe Saleeba are still puzzled over P. J.’s original problems and his “nice” physics materials. Wendy Manning and Scott LePage still remain the best couple. Could it be because they are the only ones left who are still with the person they came with? A badminton game was organized outside but it quickly fell through because Debbie McCarron hit all the birdies up on the garage roof. . . the game was saved by Neil Martin who simply stood on his toes and retrieved all of the lost birdies. It was noted that Debbie Stevens and Billy Carolan are patrons of the Cliquot Club. Bobby Clark, Bob Taylor, and Mike Martin have returned from a trip to Georgia and claimed that they found quite a bit of southern comfort. Pat Whipple couldn’t make the party because she’s still in the detention hall. Fashion model Lynne Mirando is modeling the latest style . . . the flesh look. Therese Drape has had all of her hair cut off because of an accident she had in her woodworking course with an electric drill. Denise Fortin looks on as Jackie Kane flashes around her ten karat diamond. Starlet Ann Harding has just returned from Hollywood after completing her latest film, “Amazon.” Audrey Leonard, edi- tor of the New York Times, has her pad and pencil out, taking notes on all the excitement for a front page article. Paul Martin is engaged in a deadly business . . . leading a funeral march. Rick Daneau has become Seek- onk’s police chief, replacing Officer Hicks. . . Velta, that is. Sue Stedman arrives late because of a flat front tire on her bicycle. Elise Strickland is busily handing out pamphlets of the revival of the Monkees fan club. Julie McDonnell is seen flitting about and babbling to everyone to buy another yearbook supplement. Ronnie Reposa is trying to spike the punchbowl, but he’s interfering with Sheri Almeida and Ken Kenyon who are measuring its density. In an obscure corner, Bill Power can be heard preaching the evils of wine, women and song to his disciples Kenny Nordstrom, Joe Barth, Mike Amaral, and Paul DeFruscio. As Debby Handy and Katie Bliven hang up their respective mink coat and Army jacket, they stumble upon a hot poker game in progress, among Rod Bet- tencourt, Steve Johnson, John Correia and Bob Berthiaume. Dave Lucrkut, Ed Comstock and Mike Vezza are attentively listening to the stimulating lecture on Alpha Beta particles by Freddy Z. Carol Sisco is giggling over the rumor that Debbie Mello is Joe Namath’s favorite barmaid at the Bachelors III in Boston. Nancy O’Brien, star of the Ted Mack Amateur Hour and her side kick, Mary Pelletier, have ar- rived in a long black limousine, driven by Gilbert LeMarier. Bob Belsky, Rick Farrell, and Wayne Garceau are out back stomping pumpkins. Marcia Boots and George Sykes are in the kitchen conducting a Senior Classical League Meeting. Donna Stebenne, Denise Jutras, and Donna Olean, the Three Musketeers, can be seen in a huddle laughing at ???. The renowned author, Jackie Clemishaw, has recently written a biting satire on the Student Council, pub- lished by mad Meredith Dalton. Donna Viera can be heard above all the noise demanding that the person who stole her pickles and olives return them immediately. After talking with Dave Hamel, Ray Secour informed us that Dave is much easier to understand now than he was twenty years ago. Although it is a little out of season, Andy Yaghjian has just rolled in singing the Alma Mater and wearing Santa’s outfit. His nose and eyes match his attire. Steve Garvey can be seen trailing Andy around and asking if he really is Santa. Larry Norstrom has been reminiscing about the horrors of a Type “A” lunch to Jodie Johnson, who in return, has only one statement to make, “Get outta here!” And now, with the party drawing to a close, Karen Adams, Elaine Tullson and Sandra Andrade are depart- ing on a Sentimental Journey. Kandarian, C. Zapasnik, N. Coggeshall, P. Krupowicz, B. Clark, B. Adams, C. Connelly. The football season of ’69 will never be forgotten by the senior football players. This was to be ‘The Year’ for Seekonk High until injuries and a multiple of miscues came into play. Once again a Seekonk foot- ball team proved it was capable of challenging any team in the area. Only eight points separated the Warriors and Fee- han High, the latter supposedly the local powerhouse. Here again injuries played a key role with four Seek- onk starters out of action. Ending the season with a respectable 5-4 record, the Warriors savored the overwhelming victories over Case, Old Rochester, and Dennis-Yarmouth. The most gratifying victory came on Thanksgiving Day against Dighton-Rehoboth when the Warriors battled back from a seven point deficit. For the second straight year Seekonk has captured the coveted Thanksgiving Day trophy. The graduating seniors hope their efforts have not been in vain and expect the team of ’70 to provide a permanent place in Seek- onk High for the towering bronze prize. The graduating senior football players were unique in many respects. As sophomores no less than six made the starting unit. For three years they combined their talents to finish with the following records: 5-4, 7-1-1, and 5-4, For the past two years Seekonk has commanded second place in the Narry League. Before these seniors made their debut Seekonk had never had a winning football team. It’s a tribute not only to these seniors but also to the coaches who worked with them. These individuals not only instilled a winning spirit at Seekonk High but also finished with an admi- rable total record of seventeen victories, nine losses, and one tie. The senior players won’t forget their ex- periences under these outstanding men. i 7 Sg Pe E ‘Se gomi deter aart h st gaa een 8 COACHES: R. Ridalfi, G. Bowers, V. LaFontaine, P. Our dedicated and talented cross-country team has once again won special recognition for Seek- onk High. For the second consecutive year the squad has captured the Narry League crown. Their reign is undisputed since they have gone undefeated in dual meets each year. In fact, they shut out five of the opposing seven teams. Their honors and trophies are piled high since their victories have resulted from a dogmatic team effort. Not only did they snare the Black- stone Valley Area Championship but also placed 5th in the toughest division in the state of Massa- chusetts. Senior Mark Harrison won individual praise by finishing sixth out of 1,495 competitors in the State Meet and sixth out of all the runners in New England. On a given night they were capable of devastating any team in the Narry League. However, on a particular evening they were vulnerable to the league’s worst. Ex- cept for the nightmare at Holy Family the team was in contention in every game, thrilling the home crowds on several occasions. For the first time the Warriors attr acted a sizable number of spectators at both their home and away games. Hopefully, this is an indication of developing school spirit which all our teams need so badly. Although their record was far from impressive, there seems to be a fire igniting under the basket- ball talent at Seekonk High. Perhaps in a few years as Our always successful junior varsity units mesh together Seekonk may assume the rule over the Narry League. Breast- stroke How many students realize and appreciate the talent and initiative shown by our fantastic swim team? Is there another area team which has a “Hall of Fame” or an award such as “The Most Improved Swimmer of The Week?” The Pawtuc- ket Times stated that since Seekonk High had en- tered the competition, the Max Read Memorial Swim Meet was assured of displaying the area’s finest talent. It goes without saying that Seekonk High has swim talent, yet major meets such as the Brown and the Max Read Memorial Meet are won only as a result of a dedicated and unified team effort. One couldn’t help but notice how this squad psyched itself up for each meet. Its en- thusiasm and unselfishness were extraordinary. Our swim team possessed what every athlete envies, a winning spirit. As a result of their nota- ble accomplishments Reflections ’70 would like to pay tribute to the outstanding members of this year’s swim team and their respected coach, Mr. Ellis Mayers. James Souza — Most Valuable Player For the Seekonk nine the baseball season of 1969 was one chockfull of extra-inning and one-run games. Time and time again victory slithered from their grasps. However, with only two seniors graduating, the War- riors of 1970 will be a club comprised of tal- ented underclassmen and seasoned veterans. The squad’s precociousness is personified by senior James Souza, who held not only the position of co-captain but also received the team’s most valuable player award. With our capable and knowledgeable coach, George Bowers, at the helm of such potential, the Warriors of 1970 will be the ones to watch in the spring. Seniors Lacroix gets in the groove.
