This year We have chosen Totem Poles as our theme. Each Totem Pole tells a complete story. Every symbol on the pole explains a part of that tale. It is our sincere hope that the Kumtux of 1965 has successfully recorded the history and me- mories of the great year of 1965 at SWHS. Kumtux OUR KUMTUX STAFF, TOP ROW: Rick Tesarik, Larry Brown, Rick Sapp, Clark Parker. SECOND ROW: Dorthy Shiel, Jane Silverthorn, Russ Ray, Tom Oakes, Steve Johnson, Joann Wiles, Janet Kershner. She has faithfully and actively served Sedro Woolley High School for seventeen years in a variety of areasQ Since her first year of service she has been teaching such languages as: Spanish, French, Latin and English. She began the first language club in the high school and made it a success. Miss Grandadam is also credited with making the Homecoming Queen's and King Legs royal robes, which have added greatly to the festivities. These are only a few of her many talents, since she was also a drama coach and directed many fine plays. She worked many hours designing and making the costumes that made the plays so much more enjoy- able to watch. Yes, Miss Grandadam has done a wonderful job at our high school and is greatly ap- preciated. In accepting the new position of Vice-Prin- cipal for the school year 1964-65, I am proud to continue to be a part of the growth and tra- dition of Sedro Woolley High School. A new gymnasium, science building, stu- dent center and other improvements are in- dicative of the spirit of the parents and the associated students. Every facet of this school, clubs, athletic teams, and student body, combined with com- munity interest, help maintain this interest and spirit to which end we all must work to- gether. Arthur Bagley Vice-Prine ipal If Ihad the chance to do it over again, I would work harder and take greater advan- tages of the opportunities offered. These words are almost universally stated by stu- dents that have been out of high school a few years. The opportunities offered in a modern com- prehensive high school are many and varied. For a student who is interested and uses his ability, the avenues of study and enjoyment open to him are unlimited. Programs are designed to develop each young person to cope rationally with his or her role in the future. For the senior. . .it is too late. For the underclassman there is still time. Will you be one who wishes high school could be re- peated, or will you stand secure in the fact that you did your best? Your Kumtux staff and advisor have created with words and pictures an excellent account of the record you have achieved in high school. It is my sincere hope that each of you will look at this record with pride. George Bricka Principal www M MRS. BLANCHE ALBERTINE Office Secretary MR. JOHN BARNARD C. P. , U. S. The Seniors graduating in the Class of 1965 will look back on their High School days, years from now, and remember the many things they did as a class. When they were Sophomores they held a very suc- cessful paper and bottle drive. What a thrill it was when they tied for first in the Homecoming Parade. As Juniors they again had a successful paper drive. The Seniors nominees for Homecoming Royalty were elected this year, and their float took first place. Other events will pass before they actually step out into the lonely world. GOOD LUCK SENIORS! STAND- ING: Roy Dodd, Jack Browning, Mr. Rowley. The opening week of football proved to be a week of excitement and anxiety. The Cubs were hoping to revenge last year's defeat by the Sumner Spartans. The Cubs looked the better team but the score didn't back them up, they lost their first game 12-0. The following Friday the Cubs again took the field with the hopes of victory. They LEADING THE TEAM WERE CO-CAP- TAINS: Rick Sapp, Dan Sims, Don Hull, Doug Colglazier. looked the better team and this time the score proved it. Cubs 30 - Tomahawks 7. Last year the Cubs took the Mt. Vernon-Sedro Woolley trophy. They won this prize by de- feating the Bulldogs three years in a row. This year was viiwizfifeixi to be the fourth in a row, but a strong Bulldog team had different ideas. The Cubs led into the final minutes before the Bulldogs scored their lone touch- down to pull ahead and win 9-6. The following weeks proved to be equally as exciting as the first few. Probably the high point of the season was the Cubs outstanding homecoming victory over the highly rated Snohomish Panthers 27-13! The Cubs showed tre- mendous poise and determination in this one. The Cubs, as always, gave the school something to be proud of. It is their wish that Cub teams of the future con- tinue this tradition. Northwest District Meet Speed, endurance, and strength are the most important factors to a Cross Country runner. The boys average four miles of hard running each night. This year we had five members become members of the 100 mile club. The sport is gaining in popularity throughout the district. Over 120 runners participated in the district meet. Many of the boys turn out for Cross Country to get into shape for sports that start later in the year. Cross Country is a hard sport but the rewards are well worth the effort. The jamboree was the next action to follow. Burlington and Woolley combined forces to down the Oak Harbor Wildcats and Anacortes Sea Hawks. Through the next seven league games the Cubs compiled a rather poor 2-5 record. This is when things started to happen. After the following 9 games the Cub's had won 8 and lost 1. During this time they upset the high flying Burlington-Edison Tigers. The Cubs Gunderson hits for two against Snohomish ended the year with a 10-6 league record and 11-9 for the season. Sedro Woolley was forced to play with- out the services of Senior letterman Dennis Gunderson. Denny was sidelined early in the season with a leg injury which he acquired during the Mt. Vernon-Woolley game. This year's graduating class should be extra proud of the Basketball team for- during the tenure of their high school years the Cub team never fell to the arch rival Bulldog. We were 7-0 for this duration. JR. VARSITY: C. Pease, B. Bolinger, P. Johnson, T. Sapp, D. Allison, J. Straw, E. Wolfe, M. Webb, J. Phay, R. Joiner, D. Under the direction of Mr. Stan Omdal, the FFA is active in all school events, and find time to make some money on the side. As the FFA is one of the more prosperous clubs in Sedro Wool- ley High, they could afford to buy a much-needed coke machine for the canteen in the new gym. With this and many other pro- jects, the FFA chalks up another good year. Cooks ond Mointenonce OUR COOKS: Mrs. Clara Cole, Mrs. Rose Spencer, Mrs. Audrey Plummer. This year the cooks have come up with many surprising lunches that pleased all the students. These women come to the school early in the morning to prepare the five to six hundred lunches that have to be ready by 10:45. It takes more than skill to achieve the constant high standard of excellence that is put into each menu, it also takes in- genuity and a delightful imagination. Sedro Woolley is proud to have the fine talents of Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Spencer, and Mrs. Plummer. Keeping the halls and surroimding area of Sedro Woolley High School clean and free from litter takes a lot of time. The men who do these jobs have a large responsibility on their hands. This year, Sedro Woolley has a fine jani- torial staff in Dolph Stafford, Cecil Hill, and John Thornehill. John and Cecil can also be found wheeling bus number 11 in the morning and afternoon. Dolph could be called the n ew co me r, having start- ed work here at the end of last year.
