When they were finally stopped by Anacortes, they had won l3 straight games. ln the first practice game, the Cubs bowled over Ferndale by a score of 45-2l. Next came the LaConner team, which was defeated by a score of 37- l9. Arlington was next, and at the end of a close game the score was 29-28 in favor of the Cubs. Later, in a practice game which took place during the regular season, South Kit- sap was taken by a score of 50-38. ln this game Lisherness and Cogdill were high scoring men, the former making 17 points and the latter ll. The regular season started two weeks earlier than usual when the Cubs journeyed to Mt. Vernon on December 20 for the first conference game. There they defeated the Bull- dogs in a one-sided game which ended in the score 45-9. Norm Lisher- ness was high score man with 14 points, and Cogdill was next with 9 points. Both men played but two quarters of the game. Burlington, who was the next vic- tim of the county, was defeated in a close game which ended in the score of 23-22. Cogdill saved the day by running up l2 points. The next game was with Hamilton, who was defeated on the local floor by the score of 38-25. Then came La- Conner who went down by a score of 35-20. Lisherness made l6 of these pf?l1'1tS. The Cubs then traveled to Ana- cortes. where they defeated the Sea Hawks in a low scoring game which finally ended 20-9. Gee was high point man with 8 points, and Hunter sparked a drive in the second quar- ter with 4 points. The Bulldogs of Mt. Vernon were beaten the second time by the score of 37-27, Cogdill garnering l6 points. Edisai next went down to defeat by a score of 39-22, with Lisherness Scoring l7 points. The squad then met Burlington again in perhaps the best played game of the season. All the members of the team scored, and the final score was 36-30 in favor of the Cubs. The first quarter in competition with Concrete proved to be a slow one, but the Cubs finally downed them to the tune of 5l-26. ln their second encounter with An- acortes, the Cubs suffered their first defeat of the year, their opponents winning by a score of 37-23. Fianna- gan of Anacortes ran up a score of 19 points. The Cub squad then went to the district tournament as first place team of this county. Here they were de- feated by Mt. Baker and Lynden in two hard fought games. The score of the first game was Mt. Baker 39, Sedro-Woolley 36. The second game ended with Lynden 40, Sedro-Wool- ley 38. Niles Iordan is only letterrnan not pictured. 423-i learning the Ropes Fight tans saw the local tistic ar- tists in action only three times this season, due to the tact that several schools asked to have the Sedro Woolley fighters appear at their schools while formerly all the smok- ers were held here. Coach Bill Mul- len's boxing team came out on top at the end of the season by winning tour smokers and losing one. Their first two smokers were with Bothell. The Cub boxers turned back the strong Bothell team tive to three in the tirst event, and tour to three in the second. The most hotly con- tested smokers were the two with the hard hitting Kelso team. The Cubs won the tirst, tive to tour, and were edged out ot the second, tour to three. The Cubs ended the season by de- feating the Hoquiam team six to tour. Because the opponents were not always able to provide competi- tion tor all the boys whom Coach Mullen wished to use in the smokers, the Bellingham C. Y. O. was called on to till in with some of their boys. The Cubs won two out ot three of these extra bouts. The Boys' Club sponsored an ex- hibition smoker by the C. C. C. boys and later the C. C. C. boys held an- other smoker in the high school gym. Some ot the high school fighters fought with each other at these events lor experience. Boys who fought their last bouts tor the Cubs this year were: Roger Hammond, Dorn Shomshak, Tom lVIcCalib, Lloyd Marihugh, Iunior Kell, lack Wolslegel, and Stanley Holton. lack Wolslegel was captain. Dorn Shomshak fought and won 12 bouts during his three year career, an unusual record. Stanley Holton's performance during his senior year marked him as one ot the best box- ers S. W. ever produced. He was a tour year man, All the other gradu- ating lettermen will also be missed on the team next year. Other letter-winners were Dick Binghouse, Bill Wilcox, Vernon Sims, LeRoy lVIacLellan, Bob Norris, and lim Moen. Boxing has been a major sport at Sedro-Woolley High School tor tour years. During that time the Cubs have had 25 smokers with other high schools and clubs, winning 22 and losing three. The wrestling team this year was a bit inactive. Due to the fact that most schools do not offer wrestling, it is ditiicult to schedule any bouts. However, some exhibition matches were given at all home smokers as well as at Bothell. Approximately 15 boys turned out for this sport. Mr. Kenneth Driskill was the wres- tling coach. Kenneth Duncan and George Schrindel were lettermen last year. George and Wayne Williams will be lost to the wrestling squad through graduation. Kenneth, an outstanclng high school wrestler, will be back to lead the squad next year.
