The debating team whose pictures appear above upheld the S. H. S. in the County debate contest. Four schools entered the contest and it so happened that Sedgwick drew the County champions for the prelim- inary contest and were eliminated. The fact that the decision was against them does not indicate that there was no work of a creditable nature done. The illtllll showed the result of much work in way of preparation ot' argument. More training on the delivery part of the debate seems to be responsible for the lack of decisions won. NVith the growing enthusiasm is debate work. shown by the start made by the Freshmen class of this year, and also by the talk of the interested folks we hope this part of the school activities will have its share of patronage from the pupils and patrons and in this way bring about the backing necessary for winning teams. 12 If Ii D A N D lV H I T E Sflllllllillg, left to right-aKenneth Lewis, Orville XVright, Chester Fadley, XValter Koch, Herman Ormann, Henry Hayden, Fred Fulton, Dale Holman, Paul Pollard. Boys, Baslietloall The reeord of our basketball team, altho not as spectacular as that of our football team. was unusually good when one considers the handi- cap the hoys had to fight against. They had no plaee to praetiee and had in addition to struggle against the indifference and laek of enthusi- asm which is always the result of no home games. ln spite of these facts the team went through a sueeessful season as their record shows, and is to be congratulated on the reeord it made. 'l'wo defeats, one by Valley Center after a tie score at the elose of the regular period of playing and the other hy Partridge who won the distriet championship is not a had record to place against the five vietories as follows: Walton, twice: Halstead, Burns, and Moundridge. VVilh no gymnasium in which to practice basketball and being eliminated from other athletics, because of the nature of the games, it is remarkable to have courage to keep boosting for what we hope is coming soon for Sedgwick when there will be an opportunity for all pupils to take direct part in the sports. The number of QLIIIIOS played and the score of the same should not be looked on as inability to play the game but rather as a plea for a fair deal for the girls. Let's keep up the fight for a gynlnasilun. 18 RED AND VVHITE i l Top row, left to rightglf rank Finch, Clarence Jacobson tCaptainJ George Penner fCoachJ, Paul Pollard, Jesse Kellogg. Bottom row, e Fred Fulton, Walter Koch, Relay team QPollard, Hayden, Kellogg, Jacobsonl, Robert Lynn, Henry Hayden. The 1923 track team kept up the reputation of Sedgwick High School by winning things. Although they did not win the cup in the Annual ,County meet they scored thirty-five points which under ordinary conditions should win a meet in which five schools compete but two of the teams were unable to take their proper shares and this left too much winning to do. The relay team not only won the cup but also lowered the Harvey County record. It now stands at three minutes and fifty-one seconds flat. The record was made on a heavy track. By winning the first place in Class C at Southwestern the boys showed their ability to advertise Sedgwick when up against teams from other parts of the State. They also established a fine half-mile relay record of one minute thirty-eight and three-fifth seconds. Jacobson made a broad jump of nineteen feet six and three-fourth inches, Hayden a pole vault of ten feet nine and one-half inches and Kellogg ran the ,HU yards in fifty-five seconds. With the showing the boys will be able to make at the Fairmount meet the year has been a very successful one. D AND VVH D AND ,,. ' A -. .vi - QS, . 1 ? - s' .4 -1' - Wy y xv .' . .A r 11, Q 4 4.
