Where a Sllltlll one P00111 country school stood years ago, IIOVV stands the three story building that C01llllltlllllS the interest of both citizens and travelers. The Sedgwick High School was organized thirty-four years ago, by Supt. H. VV. Charles, and since that time nine learned men have filled the Superintendent's chair. I11 the year 1912, the old building was replaced by the present 3435.000 structure. which is 111oder11 i11 every respect. Tl1e iirst class to be graduated from S. H. S. consisted of six persons. and the largest class lllill l1as been graduated, tl1at of 1916, consisted of twenty-tive. In 1913 a Normal Training course was added to the course of study and in 1914 IJ0lll0SllC Art a11d Science and Manual were added, making this a second class school. Debate, glee club and chorus work, oratory, literary, Zllld many kinds of athletics have been added, i11 order that S. H. S. might take part in inter-school affairs. The Sedgwick School Sentinel, established i11 1919. has carried the llllllll' ol' the SCTIOOT far and wide. This Temple of Knowledge has its doors open to both grade a11d high school students. S. H. Deita '20, Ukelele Club '19, De Luxe '17, SEDGWICK HIGH SCHOOL 17 Senior Class Historq In the fall of '16 the class of 1920 entered Sedgwick High School. The desire to be original, to have the best time of any class, to be the best of friends, and to work for Sedgwick High, has furnished the in- spiration that has made the members of 1920 stand foremost among the workers of the school. Early we adopted the motto: XVe can because we think we can. And in all school activities have proved its truth. During the second year the VVar Cloud descended and fierce battles were waged between the classes over pennants and colors. However, so unifid was the Sopho- more class that wewwithstood all trials, thus won victory, and likewise the spoils. In the Junior year, our boys' team won the series of interclass basket ball. The year closed with a successful Junior-Senior Banquet. The beautiful and artistic arrangements, the luxurious menu, and the bril- liancy of the toasts, all combined to add one perfect picture to the recol- leetions of Sedgwick High School. The Senior year opened with a party in honor of the new Faculty. Then, at Thanksgiving, the Senior girls gave a splendid banquet to the Football Boys, they having won the majority of games during the season. In this year, both teams met and vanquished all other class basket ball teams, and were awarded the championship cups. Our class has always been strong in athletics in Football and Track, our boys having the majority of star members. Likewise in Debate, Literary, Sentinel work, Orchestra and Glee Club, our class has always been well represented. And so we pass on into the world with its opportunities ever with loyal devotion to the Sedgwick School, keeping always as a motto: IVE CAN BECAUSE VVE THINK IVE CAN. The following dialogue took place: Spirit of the Future: I have come for you, Spirit of the Past, to lead you into the land of tolnorrow. If you will follow me I will bring to you wonderful ex- perience in the 'Land of Tomorrow'. Spirit of the Past: No, but we don't want to leave this landg for look al the things that we have done in the past. XVe have lead the S.H.S. in the greatest of her activities. Look at our athletics. In football we lead the other classes for stars. Spirit of the Future: But if you will follow me, Schaefer, Lamborne and Kiser, you will play on the 'All State Team'. Spirit of the Past: But in the land of estcrda we had such Great music and art 'O geniuses. You see we put on an operetta and won our place in music. Spirit of the Future: But if you will follow me, I will lead you to the top of the ladder in music and Elocution. Nell and Birdy shall take the place of Dillen- beck and Bonnie Brooke and they shall not be excelled in these arts. XVill you accept the proposition and follow me ? This little paper with heart and soul was founded in the year nine- teen and nineteen and the first copy off the press was christened on February seventh. The christening took place lll the High School Audi- torium before the entire student body when little Miss Neva VVatson broke the bottle of champaign and let the sparkling liquid flow freely over the first copy of Volume No. 1. From its infancy the little news bearer progressed safely and successfully under the direction of Miss Joanna Coble, its Editor-in-Chief, with the assistance of three Associate Editors, Miss Mildred McGinn, Miss Mae Crum and Mr. Orville Fry. Aside from the editorial staff was the business staff and the reportorial staff. The business staff consisting of Paul Elliott, adv. lllgr., and Glen Adamson and Floyd Miles, circulating mgrs. Reporters: sport-A Gail Cox, soeietyfClarice Hand, exehangefAlice Nichols. Of the eight issues of its first year there were three special issues, consisting of the christening number, the Harvey County Track Meet Special consisting of sixteen pages, and the Commencement number. Second Year, First Semester The first issue was published on Sept. 19, under the direction of the new staff, Miss Mae Crum, Editor-in-Chief, Mildred McGinn and Car- men Hobble, Associate Editors, and the other members of the various departments being: Lelia Jones, Blanche Morrison, Nellie Steffe, Mae Hoover, Gail Cox, George Nicholson. SEDGVVICK HIGH SCHOOL 33 Manual :Training The course of study provides for two years of Manual Training. These two years give the pupils a good start in the use and care of tools and encourages originality in plans. This department holds the interest with the boys that like to he doing things with their hands as well as their heads. VVe are turning out many pretty and useful articles. We are hoping this department will grow in equipment and we are sure the number of pupils and the quality of work will grow in proportion. Herman, our little cheer leader, is on the stage in an instant and within a minute the students are at the foot of the stage. With eyes sparkling and 2lI'lltS in the air, he cries: VVho Are, Ready Go. VVho are, who are, who are we? We are, we are the 1 P-In-O-P-L-Ia. Sedgwick. On the rough the list we go. We are too enthused to go to classes. Riekity, rickity, rack. When you're up, you're up, Shingle nails and carpet taeks, When you're down, you're down, We-'re the people, we-'re the stuff. When you'r'e up against Sedgwick We're from Sedgwick, that's enough. You're up side down. Quinine Stricknine, down with the foe, Pick 'em up with iodine and stick 'em down below. First we start off with Teams, then Here comes the boat, VVe are the people. people, It's a long way to the goal, and end with our high school song, The Crimson and the White. Thus ends a Friday morn- ing PEP chapel. SEDGWICK HIGH SCHOOL CAPTAIN CARL SHIRK 165 lbs. Age 18 Shirkie never shirked but was Johnnie on the spot. When the team needed strength, he carried the ball, and when he charged, nothing less than three men could stop him. His disposition and good judgment assistede greatly in the showing that our team made this year. OSCAR BRUINGTON 160 lbs. Age 19 Prunes played right tackle and with the help of Babe furnished a stone wall defense which the enemy found could not be pene- tliated. Oscar was voted the best football p ayer. SAM SCHAEFER 115 lbs. Age 15 Sambo was our center. Although he is light, he did the work. He has a wonderful amount of grit. We are thankful that we will have him again next season, because we know he can deliver the goods. WILLARD KISER 165 lbs. Age 14 Pat who played left guard put his whole soul and energy into football. He has that stick to it in him and is certain to win. GLEN ADAMsoN 145 lbs. Age 18 Snort went to Nickerson and played in the strongest game of the season. He was treated rather rough and received a broken nose. He did not re-enter again until the last of the season, but when he did it was with the same vim and force that he started with. PAUL ELLIOTT 145 lbs. Age 19 Dutch could play to beat the Dutch. He was always ready to grab the ball and start for a touchdown, and he usually made them too. He hit everything that come in his way. He has lots of pep. THE SEDGWICAN OLLIE LAMBORNE 145 lbs. Age 18 This is Lamborne's second year in the S. H. S. squad. He was handicapped at the beginning of the season by not entering school till late, but just wait till next year. CHARLES SCHAEFEII 147 lbs. Age 17 Charles was lucky this season in that he never got injured. He played left end. He has much ability and grit, also. FRED POWELL 160 lbs. Age 16 Powell was selected from the Junior High. He did very successful work, having played in many positions during the season. He is a promising player for next year. CHARLES 0'DELL 130 lbs. Age 16 This is O'Dell's first year at football. Al- tho he didn't participate in any of the games this year, he has excellent ability to be one of S. H. S. stars in future years. LAWRENCE CADLE 145 lbs. Age 16 Jimmie sure can play love--and football -well. He played in spurts, but when keyed up in an emergency he was a power to be reckoned with. Jimmie will be here next year, ready to rare. NILE KUNKLE 155 lbs. Age 16 Kunkle played right guard this season and did very good work. He is a Freshman so we will still have the joint and a half for u few more years. -Y , 11. ggLg...Lu,...g...'.,..xL- !a:r.a....l...4.:a..2i. Q Q 1 I . , SEDGWICK HIGH SCHOOL HAROLD HOLLISTER 165 lbs. Age 18 Babe has a mountain of strength and this enables him to plow holes through the line for the back field men. He is a powerful man, yet we call him Babe. GAIL COX 155 lbs. Age 18 Pealem said he could not play until he was half buried, and if you watched him closely you could see this to be true. We hope to see Sedgwick represented on some college team by our faithful Coxie. GERALD MILLER 160 lbs. Age 16 Gerald is another one that we can depend on next year. He is a faithful S. H. S. work- er along the line of athletics. He is a mem- ber of the Freshman class also. MR. LYNN, Manager Mr. Lynn is the manager. He has given his time and exertion toward making the team a success. He arranged one of the finest schedules that Sedgwick has ever played. MR. PEARCE, Coach No team can win without a good coach. Sedgwick certainly did not lack that im- portant factor for much of our winning ability was due to Mr. Pcarce's hard work. '38 THE SED GXVICAN Firxi row Nlnlwl Milvs, lilllll I'illch. This makes four years for Babe, He was always known to place wherever he was entered. his is evidenced by the individual medals, trophy cups and relay pennants seen on exhibi- tion in our trophy ease. He brings home the bacon, 2 Gail Cox. This is Peal'em's third year on the team. Ile was ever anxious for lns events, and was always found to he a valuable man on the relay team. Bridle Blinds are his only need. 3-Paul Elliottv--Small but mighty. Dutch, with the fifty yard dash, as his favorite, was always among the leaders. fl-fC2ll'l Shirk. In Shirkey, we find the unusual combination of weight and speed, hurling the discus. heaving the shot, and bringing in a nice margin on the relay. A record smasher is he. 52-Glen Adamson. Snort is now completing his fourth year and is nearing the High School record in high jump and pole vault. 6-Charles Schaefer. Slick has been out to practice for three years, he has trained and the prospects look good for him. 7--Oscar Bruington. Prunes has been one of Uncle Sam's tars for the past two years. Although a Junior this is lns first appearance in track, but from all indications, he can be counted on to make a place for himself-Wand he did. 8-Sam Schaefer. Watch Sam's smoke on the dashes. He will be with us for years to come. 9-Nial Kunkle. Kunkle has the grit and endurance for the work on the mile, but it IS experience that he IS lacking. EVENTS--HARVEY COUNTY MEET. Toy with the dangling chain as you again gazq out on your victims-then you are ready to begin. Always start with patronizingly stating that it pleases you greatly to see your handsome countenance reflected in the sea of bright,1 clean and happy faces that are before you. This is a new idea and by springing it you are sure to bring down the house. Now you are ready for the main part of your speech. As point one tell the students that they have a great opportunity in High School. This will strike them as being something original, and will provide much serious thought. When this startling statement has been swallowed by the listeners take up point number two, which besides giving a brief history of the war, should deal with the very strenuous times in which we live. At this point register great gusto. Pounding on the pulpit adds to the effect. lf you have put the proper amount of time on each of the above points, about thirty minutes will have elapsed and before taking up the last of your message, playfully remark that the stu- dents before you are clammoring and yearning for the class room. After the shouting and clapp- Illg has subsided and things are quiet again use every power at your command to impress u on your listeners that the world needs leaders. They have probably never heard this before, antfas a clhnax to your speech the idea will make a great hit. You are now through, for you have said all that can properly be said in a chapel speech.
