THE COMET dream he recognlzed the volce of h1s W1f8 He slghed as he moved slowly tovs ard the kltchen reallzlng that though once he had been ln command of h1S ovvn shlp he was now under a more powerful command that of h1s Wlfe Mary Slmmons 44 HAUNTED HOUSE We were l1v1ng 1n and old house Wh1Ch had been empty many years It was located 1n a lonely sectlon of the town whele there were only three other houses that had occupants 1n them Our house had been occupled only three tlmes 1n the past forty years that IQ by real people For durmg those years lt had had one regular lnhabltant the ghost of old Aunt Luce For lt was she who had owned the house many years ago Even durxng her l1fe tlme Aunt Luce had not been an ordlnary per son The story ran that she had been a very beautlful young glrl who had fallen ln love wxth a shlps captaln and he had salled away on a long voy age from wh1ch he had never returned From then on a lantern was always llghted on the porch for the captaln vvho never came back And the 1nhab1 tants of the vlllage never saw the glrl who seemed to have turned ov er mght to a wlzened old lady except for her rare VlS1tS to the store to get provlslons It was also rumored that at nlght long walks were made by Aunt Luce to the shore where she watched partlcularly ID blmdlng ram and snowstorms for Shlp to enter the harbor When vve mov ed Into the house the story of old Aunt Luce had been al most forgotten but lt was recalled to us bv an old lady who came to v1s1t us late one evenmg She entertalned mv brother and me by tellmg us bedtlme storles about Aunt Luce and she wound up by saylng Aunt Luce st1ll l1ves IH thls old house and vvalks nt nlght to find her lonr lost lov er And some tlmes she pl zys the plano th It you see over there IH that corner to lure hlm back across the se IS My brother and I crept up to bed very quletly so that we wouldn t wake up our ghost We lav there shlverlng and finally went to sleep In the m1d ile of the nlght I was suddenlv avs akened by my brother L1sten do vou heal anyth1ng'?
