THE COMET der the exact spot where the ball fleld 1 11OVl Dur1ng the war of 1813 the unken case was used as a fort by the C1 1 ons of Castlne agalnst the Br1t1sh The glants were of a sery cruel and bloodthlrsty race It ssas dur1ng a par t1cula1ls hard w1nter that they ate es en the1r WIVQQ and chlldren They alvs ass kept the ammals kllled off vs1th1n a hundred m1les of the1r home One sery stormy n1ght as they were returnxng from an unusually success ful hunt1ng and f1sh1ng tr1p among the coastal 1slands the1r huge raft vs as 'fotalls destroyed and they them sels es were drowned The tremendous amount of game and flsh they were car1y1ng at once fell 1nto the bay form mg a small 1sland It attracted eagles for many years unt1l noth1ng remalned but bones mud and earth whlch the eagles used 1n bu1ld1ng the1r nests of the part that the eagles had 1n 1ts formatlon but few people know that 1ts foundat1on vsas made of the bones of g1ants Frederlck Brown 42 CAPTAIN SNOW Captaln Snow sat on the porch of h1s small cottage the smoke from h1S p1pe curllng lazlly around and around and f1nalls d1sappear1ng 1nto the cloudless sky As he looked across Deacon s Pomt to the small lslands ln the d1stance h1s m1nd wandered back to the tlme when he was Captaln of the sessel Betsy ln h1s m1nd s eye he could p1cture the vs1nter when he and hlS brave crevs of tvs enty men crossed the Cape It vs as a stormy w1nter lndeed fF0SSlHg the Cape was nearly 1m poss1ble and only Wlth the best Sh1pS would the most skllled and bravest captams attempt the great task Th1s ss as the vslnter of 1776 It had been an unusually hard wlnter and few sh1ps had crossed the Cape to br1ng back supplles to the starsmg col on1es As the Betss neared the Cape the vseather vsas nne and only two men were left on watch About m1d n1ght Captaln Snow vsas awakened bs the loud cry of the Hrst mate All hands on deck The men sumped from the1r bunks haullng on the1r boots and sllckers at the same t1me Bllndlng snoss and a blow1ng gale met them as thev scram bled onto the deck Captaln Snovs shouted abose tht roar of the w1nd Lower the sa1ls and keep the boat on an es en course E job After many attempts the sessel vas at last safe from the treacherous ledges As the sun rose the w1nd and snovs ceased as qulckly as It had begun Standmg on the deck sv1th h1s half frozen and neaxly exhausted men h knelt 1n s1lent prayer R1s1ng he looked once more at the w1de expanse of dark mysterlous water that by h1s sk1ll had been conquered agaln But suddenly the st1llness of the scene was broken and the proud thoughts of the Captaln ssere xntcr 1upted bs a loud Cly from beh1nd h1m Asast ye lubberl And are se dream1ng agaln my hearty? THE COMET dream he recognlzed the volce of h1s W1f8 He slghed as he moved slowly tovs ard the kltchen reallzlng that though once he had been ln command of h1S ovvn shlp he was now under a more powerful command that of h1s Wlfe Mary Slmmons 44 HAUNTED HOUSE We were l1v1ng 1n and old house Wh1Ch had been empty many years It was located 1n a lonely sectlon of the town whele there were only three other houses that had occupants 1n them Our house had been occupled only three tlmes 1n the past forty years that IQ by real people For durmg those years lt had had one regular lnhabltant the ghost of old Aunt Luce For lt was she who had owned the house many years ago Even durxng her l1fe tlme Aunt Luce had not been an ordlnary per son The story ran that she had been a very beautlful young glrl who had fallen ln love wxth a shlps captaln and he had salled away on a long voy age from wh1ch he had never returned From then on a lantern was always llghted on the porch for the captaln vvho never came back And the 1nhab1 tants of the vlllage never saw the glrl who seemed to have turned ov er mght to a wlzened old lady except for her rare VlS1tS to the store to get provlslons It was also rumored that at nlght long walks were made by Aunt Luce to the shore where she watched partlcularly ID blmdlng ram and snowstorms for Shlp to enter the harbor When vve mov ed Into the house the story of old Aunt Luce had been al most forgotten but lt was recalled to us bv an old lady who came to v1s1t us late one evenmg She entertalned mv brother and me by tellmg us bedtlme storles about Aunt Luce and she wound up by saylng Aunt Luce st1ll l1ves IH thls old house and vvalks nt nlght to find her lonr lost lov er And some tlmes she pl zys the plano th It you see over there IH that corner to lure hlm back across the se IS My brother and I crept up to bed very quletly so that we wouldn t wake up our ghost We lav there shlverlng and finally went to sleep In the m1d ile of the nlght I was suddenlv avs akened by my brother L1sten do vou heal anyth1ng'?
