THB, COMET w as tblc to speak EIlg'l1Sl'l After that we bought some large canoes 01 dug outs and returned to the hotel Leaxlng our plane ID charge of the authorltles at Calro we set out by canoe down a small trlbutary of the lN1le to the provmce of Rhodesla where we lntended to stay wlth the BI'lt1Sl1 gox ernor It wa 1n th1s proxlnce that the w h1te gorllla was last seen by some natlxes of the Walomba tr1be The natlx es of the tr1be were under Br1t1sh rule but 1n many ways w ere as llIIC1Xll1Z9d as the head huntels and othel cann1bal1st1c tr1bes Along the stream was a seues of raplds but as our canoes were large 1nd w cll bullt and our guldes were expect any trouble We shot forward down the m1ddle of the stream and by the tlme we reached the raplds we were golng so fast that the shores were lust a blur The next moment there was a terr1f1c crash Bob and I along w1th our two boatmen looked as lf we were trvlng to fly for we were thrown out of our boat and landed sex eral yards below 1n the cold water Lucky for us there were no crocodlles 1n the stream' H3V1Hg recox ered from the lmpact and the shock of the cold watel we w aded 1nto the shallows and were soon p1CkGd up by Mr Hughes and the natn es We d9Cld9d to camp here for the nlght Bob and I bullt a fire and drled our clothes Meanwhlle Uncle Ixm and Mr Hughes had put up the two tents and were cooklng supper After supper we trled to fix our dam aged canoe but as there w as a large hole ln the slde of It we hoped to be able to contlnue w lthout 1t The day had been a strenuous one so we went to bed early After I had f1Y6d mv mosqulto nettlng I lay awake llsten 1ng to the strange no1ses one hears on h1s nrst n1ght ln the 1ungle Once o hon roaled near by and 1n 1 few moments was answered by h1s mate huntmg for food farthel up on the h1lls1de As I llstened I thought w hat a small chance one would have of get tlng out of that Jungle ahve after dark We were up at dawn and were soon on our way Uncle Jim sald that It was approxlmately a hundred mlles to the mam ullage of the Walomba Trlbe We traveled sw1ftly stopplng to eat Jlnner and once to watch two glant must have been about fifteen or twen ty feet long Uncle J1m told us that they were probably two old males fvghtmg over a female XVh1Cl'l was h1d mfr IH the lungle One was trvlng, to catch the other s head between h1s e normous 1aws Mr Hughes Sald that lf one once succeeded 1n gettlng hold of the others head he could crush It as 1f1t were paper We watched them unt1l thev sank and we knew that only one would ever come up al1ve The sun was just settlng as we reached the clty or rather the vlllage It d1d not have a populatlon of over a hundred and fifty of th1s number there were 1nclud1ng ourselves but five whlte people The Br1t1sh goxernor told us that as recentlv as yesterday the whlte gor1lla had been seen by a group of natlxes who had been out huntmg VVhen retulmng home they had caught a gl1mpse of h1m hurrymg through the 1ungle Uncle J1m Mr Hughes and the gox ernor whose name ' I 17 , K, . THE COMET laughtel thlnklng That was surely a 1oke on me H THE WHITE GOPILLA Bob and I were students of a small hlgh school 1n the state of New Jersey We were couslns and had an uncle w ho was an explorer fo1 the Museum of Natural H1storv ln New Yo1k At th1s tlflle he was plannmg a tllp to Afrlca IH search of a strange specles of gorllla Thls gorllla was Sdld to be larger than a man and probably XV61gh6d f1om two to three hundred pounds It had whlte ful and was belxex ed to be the only one of 1ts kmd IH the world Our uncle had learned about It from the natlx es On hls last xoyage he had seen two natlx es runnlng out of the 1ungle and saylng that they had seen a whlte gorllla Then about a week ago he had recelved a letter from a frlend IH Lalro The letter brought the startlmg news that although sevelal natn es had been wounded by the gor xlla no one had the courage to try to k1ll lt They regarded It as a klnd of god Immedlately Uncle Jlm w rote to the duectors of the museum They replled that they would furnlsh the money and supphes for an expedltlon and would pay h1m me thousand dollars 1f hc succeeded ln br1ng1ng the puze back dllXQ The next thlng to do was to buy supplles such as clothes canned goods 11fles and amrnunltlon When Bob and I found out that he w as gomg to Af11ca 1n search of th1s stlange an xmal we coaxed h1m to let us go too He sald he would let us go lf we would plornlsc to le un one lanf uage of the natlx es whlle 1n Atrxci We promlsed to studv xerv hard and felt sure that we could easlly master the language In two w eeks w e started for New York w here we w ere to boald Uncle Jim s new four motored plane wlth Afr1ca as ou1 destlnatxon After leaxmg New Xork our first top w as London w hele we refueled the pl me and spent the next d Ly and mght wlth 1 famous brltlsh explorel He told us th tt he w as plannlng an expedltlon to Afrlca the next veal and that he would try to find us lf we w e1e st1ll there The followlng mornlng we resumed our yourncy and headed fol Calcutta lndla The yourneg, to Calcutta was xe 1y lnterestlng Flrst we would be fly Ing oxer fertlle plalns next ox 91 de eerts and mountams After many hours of flvxng we reached Calcutta Our uncle telephoned to L uro that he would a111vc there the next day That nlght we ate supper 1n a fash 1onable hotel but the food w 1s not SO fashlonable as the hotel Mornlng found us on the last lap of our yourney We w ere flylng ox 61 vtst r tchcs of desert on w h1ch the only hung thmg to be seen w as a st1 ax can IX an ot Arabs trax cllng from one oa 1s to another F1nally we reached Cal ro where we found Mr Hughes ou uncle s frlend w altmg for us We went to the hotel wlth llril Hughes He and Uncle Jlm dlscussed the auangements for the trlp They planned to secule me or slx good gUlClQi and to start as soon as posslble Thc next day we went down to the bus1ness sect1on of Cano to find some guldes and to buy some canoes M1 Hughes was xery careful IH the selec t1on of guldes but at last he h td cho sen elght natlxes only one of whom 1 . .
