GAMBLE STORE I953 Senior Class History On a sunny day in September, 1941, 31 frightened but excited kids began their school career in the Sedan Public Schools. Miss Leota Yarger was our first grade teacher. She spent many hectic hours trying to teach us that our rugs were to lie on only in rest period and not during classes. ln 1942 we moved into the second grade room where many of us met with the hand of Mrs. Box. ln our third grade, we moved down the hall to the room of Miss Ward. Gur health inspection really began this year. Little Darrell Coe found that he would have to start combing his hair for Miss Ward. At last the year came when we got to climb the stairs to our 4th grade room, with Miss Sneller as our teacher. This is the year Billy Bruner first became interested in the girls, and Bill has made it a life long habit. Next we moved into the 5th grade room under the supervision of Miss Rasmuson. This is the year Sydney Walworth thrilled the boys with her flirty eyes. Just as we were becoming the 'Big Shots' of Maggie Kilmer, we were moved over to the High School Building where we became 'the runts' among the big kids. During the 6th grade, Carolyn James received a black eye from trying to break up a fight be- tween Sydney Walworth and Bob Burden. Mr. Don Goff and Mrs. Esther Peabody were the lucky sponsors this year. Entering Jr. High School, we found ourselves in the same two rooms. Not wanting our class to be split up we found a way to communicate with the other class by kicking notes under the door. That is until Mr. Comstock got hit on the ankle and put a stop to it. Still looking at the same 4 walls we entered our 81'h grade. Miss Elsie Trower was our sponsor. Vera Mae Lynn became the first member of our class from Elgin. We started our high school career by wearing gunny sacks and obeying the commands of the Seniors. Our sponsors were Miss Moses and Mr. Sharp. We were very proud to have Pat Spire chosen as Basketball Queen. Our Sophomore year, Mr. Loney and Mrs. Dalton were our sponsors. No one will ever forget our picnic at Cecil Smith's Cabin. Betty Lamb pushed Mr. Loney over a wall which resulted in Mr. Loney having to wear a towel because of a tear in his trunks. He couldn't find his pants which a few little angels had hidden. We entered a very busy Junior year under the sponsorship of Mr. Downing and Mrs. Dalton. Pat Spire was the Junior Cheerleader this year. Jo Ann Daniels was the Football Queen. We honored the Seniors with a lovely banquet 'Holiday Inn. We presented a clever comedy entitled Call Me Darling. We ended our year by spending a day in Ponca City, Oklahoma. We entered our last year in Sedan High School with Mr. Hudson and Mr. Lowe having the honor of sponsoring our class. Vera Mae Lynn was football Queen. Kay Kinnaman and Darlene Fuller were cheerleaders. We presented a dramatic play 'Fog Island. The Juniors gave us anice banquet. We had loads of fun on our sneak. Those graduating who started to school together in the first grade are: Robert Burden, Sydney Walworth, Shirley White, Betty Jo Pannan, Darrell Coe and Jeannette Walker. Professor Robert Bcrnes and Professor Clyde Heibert who are planning a well earned vacation from their duties at Yale University. There are two main purposes of this round the world trip. First, Professor Heibert is looking for a baby kangaroo to carry on his research work at Yale. Second, they had been wondering what had happened to the Sedan High School graduates of the class of l953 since they had always had a great expectation from this class. Before leaving they stopped in to say goodbye to Bill 'Buster' Bruner who is head football coach at Yale University. To secure their passports, Professor Barnes and Heibert flew to Washington, D. C. They wanted to see if any of the Seniors of '53 had ever become politically minded, Professor Barnes was surprised to find Don Miller and his wife, Mavis Walker, on the back of a large elephant, campaigning radically for President as a Representative Candidate. . Next the Professors flew to New York to spend a few nights living high. They decided to go to the Metrapolitian Opera where they were surprised to find Carol Keck playing the well known Sdlg, 'Napo- leon's Last Stand . Also at the Opera the well known soprano singer, Shirley Ward, was singing 'The Dave'. Leaving New York to board their ship, they were welcomed on bocrd b the skipper of the ship who was none other than Dean Beason. Walking on deck they practically fell' over James Gates, who was busy scrubbing the deck. Skipper Beason always said he would never let James go hungry. Bedding down for the night they suddenly hear music. Curiosity getting the best of them they go in search of it and what should they find but the 'Sing Sing, All Girls Jazz Band' made up of some very familiar faces. Jo Parman at the piano, Shirley White, blues singer, and Vera Mae Lynn, the hot clari- netist. They were being sent back to Sing Sing for raiding Jolly's Joint ran by Kay 'Jolly' Kinnaman at Pawhuska. Sailing into Mexico they decided to go to a bull fight. Seeing the Matador running from the bull they saw something familiar about him. Yes, it is Johnny Eggen. Upon talking to Johnny after the fight, they found he was happily married to the former Darlene Fuller and the proud parents ofa dozen children. Going on to South America they ran across Edgar Johnson who was Professor of Commerce at the University. One of his most promising students was Glenda Hudson. Next they visit Africa. Going into dark Africa by caravan they meet up with a tribe of 'Happy Head hunters' led by Chief Keith Pogo Loftin. Pogo wanted them to stay for supper, but when they found out it was one of their former students, Faye McKenzie, they were cooking, they decided against it. Then just as they were leaving, they encountered Sydney Walworth who had been running wild ever since a plane wreck from which she had never been rescued. Hurrying on through France, they came upon the internationally known playboy, Galen 'Cuddles' Huffman. Upon entering London, they find Worth Bynum, who after five unsuccessful marriages is reliving The Lost Weekend , Poor Worth. They decided to stop for a look into the Olympics at Helsinki, Finland. We heard a familiar voice yelling pop corn, peanuts, five cents a sack. lt was Robert Burden who after years of work and practice finally made it to the Olympics. Then all of a sudden out ofthe crowd they heard and saw Bett Lamb, gracefully leading the old fight yell, Now Fog lt. She was cheering an Deloyn Huffman who had iust set a world record on the 440 yard dash for the dear old U. S. A. ln Asia they encountered some Federal Agents trying to break up the Communist Party. Two ofthe men are Frank McCorkle and Edwin Vulgamore. Their third day in India they met Buddy Obenchain, who had moved to India several years ago to get rich quick on Professor Barnes advice. Bud wasn't doing so well. lt seems as if he's fallen in love with an untouchable and had to move down in class. ln China they decided to visit a Clean While-You-Wait Laundry, which was owned by Bob Chop- Chop' Hines. Chop-Chop said business 'velly-good. Passing the Philippines they found the Government was run by President Joe Rayman. They think Joe's doing a good iob. Their trip wouIdn't be complete without going to Hawaii. On a moonlight evening in the tropical Isles of Hawaii they saw Carolyn James, Edith Malone, and Kathryn Shipley in grass skirts dancing rhythmically in the firelight to the tunes of ukes, played by Darrell Coe and Dale Fadely. They always did play around in school. ln Australia Professor Heibert gets what his main purpose of this trip was, a baby kangaroo. Upon leaving Australia they enrolled Sula Dixon as kangaroo sitter an the return trip home. Sula was ready to return to the U. S. A. Upon reaching Alaska they found Jerry Shaw building an igloo and his wife, Pat Spire fixing Eskimo Pies for their four children. Coming back to the U. S. they decided they must fly back to the old home town Sedan'. Sedm still looks the same. They find Norman Stephens as Joe Warmbroth's right hand man. At the time Norman was digging a gold mine for Old Joe. Weary but satisfied they return to Yale to continue their work. They feel content and proud to have been a part of the lives ofthe Class of l953. Sponsored by Sponsored by Wll..COX l lHE:S'T'ONE SUPPLY SEDAN NOVELTY i iv.
