The band has been well-received wherever it has performed. A busy round of practice lies just ahead,- as they prepare for a re¬ peat of the superior ratings that they received at last year ' s Dis¬ trict and State Festivals. i Mr. Donnell Cooper, director of instrumental music at Second Ward since 1962, has really earned the title Mr. Music. Being a very amiable, cooperative and talented person, his personality and approach motivates the students to per¬ form at their best. Many of his students have excelled individually at the Governor’s School; in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Sym¬ phony Orchestra and in the all-school concert band. The groups under his direction are the Marching Tigers Band, the Second Ward Little Symphony Orchestra and the concert band. The versatility of these groups spans from a Rock ' N Roll Combo to the Little Symphony; from Hey, Watch Those Tigers” to the score from-SOUND OF MUSIC. Thus far the groups have participated in a Winter Show¬ case; the Carrousel, circus and homecoming parades; Fes¬ tival in the Park; Band Bowl; game intermission; and pro¬ grams at school and in the community. In competition the groups have received both excellent and superior ratings which are well deserved. 1965 Carrousel Parade Scene 37
