We ' ll love you e ' er as onward we go If thou our guide will be. The thoughts that in our minds you leave Shall ever treasured be. History and Second Ward High School was organized in 1923 with a physical plant designed to accomo¬ date an enrollment of 600 students. The com¬ munity looked to Mr. W. H. Stinson for leader¬ ship and guidance during his principalship which lasted until 1931. Mr. J. E. Grigsby succeeded Mr. Stinson in 1931. The curriculum offerings at Second Ward High School consisted of traditional subjects: English, mathematics, social studies, Latin, French, sewing, cooking, and masonry. During the administration of Mr. Grigsby, the following courses were added: art, auto repairing, com¬ mercial education, driving education, diversified occupations, standard courses in music--band, orchestra, journalism, standard physics, educa¬ tion courses in psychology, family living, shoe repairing, industrial education and mechanical drawing. Every child was afforded an opportunity to choose a well-balanced meal in the school cafe¬ teria at a small fee. In 193 8 the school applied for and was granted accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The school is also accredited by the North Carolina State Department of Education. The Library expanded in material contents thereby increasing educational resources for all students. Many improvements were recognized during the years 1931-1957 of Mr. Grigsby ' s principalship. He retired from the profession in 1957. Dr.S.E. Durante came to Second Ward High School as its third principal in 1957. Many changes occurred under his capable leader¬ ship. Curriculum expansion and improvement, the guidance programs, improved physical con¬ ditions (buildings and grounds), students ' attend¬ ance records, student achievements and student development are recognized by the community at large as being contributing factors for up¬ grading of the school within the past five years. Second Ward looks forward and places much emphasis on the value of human dignity. Mr. E. E. Waddell came to Second Ward High School August 1963 to serve the school as its fourth principal.
