Published by The Senior High Departmen of SECOND WARD HIGH SCHOOL Charlotte, North Carolina = v Ait CONTENTS Academics School Life FOREWORD The panorama of experiences encompassed by school life may be compared to rays of light of varying lengths. They mold in part our personalities and our destinies. The rays of light converge and blend to form the precious prism of friendships which will endure and deepen. The 1966 Tiger Yearbook Committee hopes that this publication will succeed in keeping the prism of friendships aglow throughout the lengthening years. THEME EMERSON IS RIGHT IN SAYING THAT FRIENDSHIP CAN ' T BE HURRIED. It takes time to ripen. It needs a background of humorous, wearisome, or even tragic events shared together, a certain tract of memories shared in common, so that you know your own life and your companion ' s have really moved for some time in the same channel. It needs interchange of books, meals together, discussion of one another ' s whims with mutual friends, to gain a proper perspective. It is set in a rich haze of half-remembered occa¬ sions, sudden glimpses, ludicrous pranks, unsuspected observations, midnight confidences when heart spoke to candid heart.--Christopher Morley, ' On Making Friends WE DEDICATE . . . to Miss Mattie M. Hall When we reflect deeply on Second Ward’s most admirable qualities, one person inevitably looms to the forefront of our minds. For over thirty years her hands and heart have helped to mold the illustrious life and vibrant spirit of our school. Her rare love for Second Ward runs deep like a precious vein of gold and is constantly evident in her relentless pursuit of lofty ideals for the improvement of the total life of our school and community. For consistent and notable service we offer to you, Miss Hall, our profound gratitude and warm wishes for continued achievements. 4 . : Shame on him if he misses that basket! History and Second Ward High School was organized in 1923 with a physical plant designed to accomo¬ date an enrollment of 600 students. The com¬ munity looked to Mr. W. H. Stinson for leader¬ ship and guidance during his principalship which lasted until 1931. Mr. J. E. Grigsby succeeded Mr. Stinson in 1931. The curriculum offerings at Second Ward High School consisted of traditional subjects: English, mathematics, social studies, Latin, French, sewing, cooking, and masonry. During the administration of Mr. Grigsby, the following courses were added: art, auto repairing, com¬ mercial education, driving education, diversified occupations, standard courses in music--band, orchestra, journalism, standard physics, educa¬ tion courses in psychology, family living, shoe repairing, industrial education and mechanical drawing. Every child was afforded an opportunity to choose a well-balanced meal in the school cafe¬ teria at a small fee. In 193 8 the school applied for and was granted accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The school is also accredited by the North Carolina State Department of Education. The Library expanded in material contents thereby increasing educational resources for all students. Many improvements were recognized during the years 1931-1957 of Mr. Grigsby ' s principalship. He retired from the profession in 1957. Dr.S.E. Durante came to Second Ward High School as its third principal in 1957. Many changes occurred under his capable leader¬ ship. Curriculum expansion and improvement, the guidance programs, improved physical con¬ ditions (buildings and grounds), students ' attend¬ ance records, student achievements and student development are recognized by the community at large as being contributing factors for up¬ grading of the school within the past five years. Second Ward looks forward and places much emphasis on the value of human dignity. Mr. E. E. Waddell came to Second Ward High School August 1963 to serve the school as its fourth principal. Alma Mater Since the beginning, Second Ward has ex¬ panded both physically and academically. Begin¬ ning with only a few vocational courses, home economics and industrial arts, aside from the regular courses, it now offers shoe repairing, masonry, auto mechanics, industrial coopera¬ tive training, distributive education, Bible and commercial education. The physical plant has grown from one building to five and annex. Second Ward is located in the center of Brooklyn area at 501 South Alexander Street, approximately four blocks from the offices of the Board of Education. The school serves both junior and senior high students. There are six structures. The main building faces Alexander Street with a newly constructed wing added in 1955-56, housingthe library, business education department, cafeteria, and band room. The gym¬ nasium was constructed in 1950. The auto me¬ chanics building is located between the main building and the gymnasium. There are 1,501 students enrolled at Second Ward this year. The school staff is made up of 72 members; 8 persons compose the cafeteria staff; and 5 members are on the custodial staff; a public health nurse completes the group. The Neighborhood Youth Corps, a job oppor¬ tunity for students, is now a part of Second Ward ' s school program. We will continue to provide those educational experiences which we hope will lead to better citizenship. ALMA MATER Dear Second Ward, Our Alma Mater, We pledge ourselves to thee. We ' ll love you e ' er as onward we go If thou our guide will be. The thoughts that in our minds you leave Shall ever treasured be. Your noble deeds shall in us live, ' Til time shall end our praise. Autographs Activities 1 mm - r-::-- Sfc-r i Sf 10 wm 11 . . . Friendship can ' t be hurried. Off-campus-wise, the vocal music groups are very much a part of Charlotte ' s cultural life. They per¬ form for churches and other com¬ munity groups. A high percentage of the groups attended two of the season ' s operas, La Boheme and La Forza del Destino . In Concert Boys’ Glee Club In Rehearsal 34 Orchestra The band has been well-received wherever it has performed. A busy round of practice lies just ahead,- as they prepare for a re¬ peat of the superior ratings that they received at last year ' s Dis¬ trict and State Festivals. Concert Band Marching Band We estimate that the Marching Tigers amassed a marching mile¬ age total of sixty during the 1965 Football season, what with prac¬ tice and all. 36 i Mr. Donnell Cooper, director of instrumental music at Second Ward since 1962, has really earned the title Mr. Music. Being a very amiable, cooperative and talented person, his personality and approach motivates the students to per¬ form at their best. Many of his students have excelled individually at the Governor’s School; in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Sym¬ phony Orchestra and in the all-school concert band. The groups under his direction are the Marching Tigers Band, the Second Ward Little Symphony Orchestra and the concert band. The versatility of these groups spans from a Rock ' N Roll Combo to the Little Symphony; from Hey, Watch Those Tigers” to the score from-SOUND OF MUSIC. Thus far the groups have participated in a Winter Show¬ case; the Carrousel, circus and homecoming parades; Fes¬ tival in the Park; Band Bowl; game intermission; and pro¬ grams at school and in the community. In competition the groups have received both excellent and superior ratings which are well deserved. 1965 Carrousel Parade Scene 37 The Playmakers One week before the big one, the District Festival, and we ' re not ready yet? Elbert Edwin Waddell Principal Boys and girls attending high school today are in the midst of a great period of change and advancement. Never before in our history have there been so many opportunities in so many fields of endeavor. Students have only to decide what they want to do and plan accordingly. They can go as far and reach as high as their abilities and interests will permit. This is the challenge of our times.
