Because of its position on the Via Egnatia, the main line of communication from Rome to the Near East, Salonika was of considerable importance as a commercial and intellectual Salonika Salonika lnow officially Thessa- lonikib, the MONROVIA's second port of call, is situated on the Gulf of Salonika in the Aegean sea, 315 miles southwest of Istanbul.
