To the Members of the Class of 1980: In years to come, the pages of this book will kindle and ro-kindle many memories of your years as a student at Seattle University. I am sure that it will become more clear to you in the future that your college years were a time of growth, a time of change, and certainly a time in which you were challenged in many ways. You were challenged to think new thoughts, to question old assumptions and to define a system of personal values which will stay with you long beyond graduation day. Each and every graduate of Seattle University shares a 400-year old Jesuit tradition of education which places a strong emphasis on service to others. Regardless of which academic concentration you pursued, it is my sincere hope that you will take with you from your educational experience at Seattle University some sense of obligation to assume a leadership role in society, whether in education, government, church or business affairs. Your judgments and actions in these positions should be conditioned by the set of ethical principles which permeates the Seattle University curriculum and which has been gleaned from your earlier education. Your judgments and actions will be the true test of those principles because a principle is never useful or living or vital until it is embodied in an action. As the President of Seattle University, I wish you happiness and success in all of your future endeavors. May you always be proud to look upon yourselves as sons and daughters of Seattle University.
