CLASS HISTORY The LARGEST freshman class that had yet descended upon Seattle College swept through the halls of the College in September. 1941, helping to swell the enrollment to the startling figure of 1450. Proving their interest in College government and activities, they chose their officers only after two spirited ballotings when Ed Craig was elected president; Mary Ellen Currid, vice president; Mary Jane Kelly, treasurer; Dorothy Tvete, secretary; and Butch” Thompson, sergeant-at-arms. The annual Frosh-Soph Barn Dance was termed the affair of the year with an estimated 200 couples in attendance. The class further showed signs of initiative in taking into its hands the offices of Forum Debate Club prexy, with Craig again its first successful candidate and John Powers holding the office later in the year. When war struck to the heart of the College on December 7, 1941, the frosh were again in the center of activity in the organization of the first College Civilian Defense Corps in the Northwest. In the ASSC elections in May, John Powers captured the office of treasurer and Manuel Vera took over the position of sergeant-at-arms. By their sophomore year the class of ’45 had become used to the wartime drain on manpower and time and wholeheartedly accepted an accelerated and intensified educational and activity program. To lead it under these difficult conditions, the class named as officers John Krueger, president; Eileen Ryan, vice-president; Warren Johnson, treasurer; Kit Eisen, secretary; and Clem Felser, sergeant-at-arms. The Barn Dance again held the spotlight for class-sponsored activities, while John Powers and Bud Feeley organized a tennis team. Men of the class were also active in sponsoring a successful smoker, while the Engineers Club, too, came into being under prodding from serious sophomores. By the fall of 1943, the class assumed the status of upperclassmen after undergoing two years apprenticeship. Eileen Ryan was elected president of the class, to be assisted by Sky Henehan, vice president; Joe Reilly, secretary; Joanne O'Brien, treasurer; and Barbara Cordes, sergeant-at-arms. While registration continued, the class ranks were almost decimated by governmental demands, but the group retained control in S.C. activities. Miss Ryan took the leadership in AWSSC and Dona Moberg was named Director of the Publicity Department. While more and more entered the service, the group paused to pray for their former classmate, Daniel Butler, the first from their midst to be killed in action. St. Patrick's Day Dance successfully insured the financial security of the Junior Prom. When the evening came to fete the seniors in the Windsor Ballroom, no glitter or traditional ceremony was omitted. With the advent of the fall quarter of 1944, the class of '45 found only a handful of the students left who had started out so brilliantly with the dedication of the new L. A. Building. But though the numbers were small, the spirit had grown out of all proportion. An enthusiastic class elected as officers Dona Gene Moberg, President; Dolores Gaffney, vice president; Betty Norton, secretary; Ann O'Shea, treasurer; and Anne Gallagher, sergeant-at-arms. Kit Eisen took the reigns of the women students, seven of whom were honored in the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. A senior sponsored Mardi Gras drew a record breaking attendance. With Senior Orals passed in a last burst of energy, the Class of 1945 now pauses to give a last look at their finished record and at the school that has been the center of their lives for the last four years.
