Coached by Ann Steffen and led by high scorer Shan- non Holland, they set team play as a primary goal and proceeded to put those goals into action by winning their first two games on the way to compiling a 5-5 mid-season win- floss record. Steffen credits this year's suc- cess to several factors. She cites the player's common bond in Christ as a major factor in team unity. ln addition, she describes the team as tough with an excited bench that adds depth to the team. The team is still young with only 3 girls graduating this year. SPU fans can look forward to even more ex- citing basketball in the future. Members of the l98O-Sl squad were: Shannon Holland. Martha Westburg, Karen Swent, Lisa Snider. Brenda Bierlink. Gwyn Huffman. Robyn Buma, Rachel Thomp- son. Tracy Giles, Denise Michelson. Deena Taylor, Lynn Mitchell and Head Coach Ann Steffen. Practice began at the start of fall quarter. They continued into the spring after the end of the season. working new skills for the coming year. The girls' major problem, as far as team competition, stems from the fact that only four girls compete in the allround competition and all four scores must count toward the team's score. Nevertheless, Coach Tindall expressed high hopes that three of the all-around competitors would qualify for nationals. SPU competes against the regional Division ll teams and several schools in Division I. including Boise State, 4th at nationals the previous year and University of Oregon, a top Division I team. High points of the season included the regional competition held at SPU and Division ll nationals held at the college of William and Mary in Williamsburg Virginia.
