ft , Professor Larry Metcalf-Chairman rt Miss Barbara Doutrich Mrs. Ngaire Hixson Mr. Clint Brown Under the direction of Professor Larry Metcalf, the art gallery initiated several programs this year including a print show, Peruvian children's stitcheries, and faculty and student shows. For the first time SPC offered a nationwide an- nual drawing competition with entries from several states. To help the campus grow in its awareness of the arts, the department co-sponsored a Fine Arts Week spring quarter. Activities included gallery shows, lectures and a clothes line art sale.

Music The Music Department endeavors to perfect its curriculum and methods as it meets the increasing needs of its stu- dents. Mr. Wayne Balch, as department head, is expanding and organizing the music program in trying to renew accredi- tation from the National Association School of Music. Dr. Carl Reed, who composes much of his own instrumental pieces, has encouraged new emphasis on student creativity in music. Music education training is supervised by Miss Winifred Leighton who has studied under the founder of the Kodaly Method. She serves as .state chairman for the Student Chapter of the Music Educator National Conference. The department has been further represented through the travels of the college band and choir. I Dr. Frank Williston Dr. Roy Swanstrom traveled in Europe during the summer, principally in the Scandinavian countries and Russia. Because Professor Krahn was on leave in preparation for his doctoral dissertation, Dr. Frank Williston, visiting professor from the Uni- versity of Washington, conducted well-received seminars on recent Far Eastern history. Because politics is everybody's business, the policy of the department is to encourage all students to take some course in political science. The course of study leading to a major is designed to acquaint the student with the enduring questions which have agitated the minds of men over the centuries.
