Deafzbmfz! To Miss hlargaret Bursell, Head Librarian, we, the staff of the 1965 Tz'XW1X1r1Sl dedicate this annual, in appreciation for her twenty- eight years ol' service at Seattle Pacific College. bliss Bursell was raised in ldaho. She came to NVashington and attended the University ol Wlashington where she received her Bach- elor ol' Arts degree in Education in 1922 and her Bachelor ol' Science degree in Library Science in 1951. ln 1957, she came to Seattle Pacilic as the librarian and she was in charge ol' about 10,000 volumes. The library was located on the top lloor ol' Peterson llall at that time. Through Miss l3ursell's continuous elliorts, the number ol' volumes increased until there was not enough room for all ol them on the top floor and many ol' the older volumes had tu he placed in the attic. The student hody was also increasing in number and the library became yery overcrowded. hliss llursell hegan plans for a new lihrary and her persistency paid oil-in 1963 the Xklcter Memorial Library, now containing 57,19-1 volumes, opened. The three-story building awed students, faculty and visitors with the simplicity and organization ol its architecture. Probably only the people who worked lor hliss Bursell knew how much ot a part she had had in the new library's becoming a reality. Also. probably only the people who have had the opportunity to work for hliss Bursell knew how deep and sincere was her interest in the students as personalities, and as scholars. She always graciously accommodated hoth faculty and students who sought information and ideas. She retires this year and her future plans include gardening and traveling. She deserves all the opportunities that will come her way. 1fVe thank her for her dedication to Christian education and to truth, M35 Margaret Bzfmeff Miss Bursell and some of her staff around the globe in the new library. 5

D14 Golda N Kemfzfzbk Dr. Kendrick at her farm in Woodinville. 4 I 14 Memoriam Dr. Colda Nelson Kendrick is a name which calls up vivid memories for scores of SPC graduates. Usually the first picture called to mind is the former custom of skipping down the aisles of McKinley with her French ma- jors-just in time to decorate the building for Christmas. It was this type of enthusiasm com- bined with her zest for living that made Dr. Kendrick a tradition at SPC. She was born in Dow City, Iowa, and took her basic college workin Illinois and Nebraska. Dr. Kendrick was known for her skill in lan- guages, she came to SPC with a BA. in Creek, and an lVl.A. and a PhD. in French, with minors in the classics and Italian. Spanish and Cerman were only side interests! As an accomplished soloist and a lover of great music, Dr. Kendrick soon found her place on the SPC music faculty. Following the com- pletion of her studies at the University of Washington and some concentrated voice work in London and Paris, Dr. Kendrick became the head of the SPC French department. Those who took courses from Dr. Kendrick found that she was a demanding professor whose infectious love for her subject made her students eager to go beyond the assignment for personal enrichment. I-ler overwhelming curiosity and her academic approach to her questions made her a true scholar, this was her goal for her students as well. Dr. Kendrick finished her work at SPC just as she would have always wanted to-while she was 'istill in the saddlef' She died quietly after a regular day of teaching on October l3, 1964. The SPC students, faculty, and alumni all felt the loss of a dear friend whose notes of encouragement, witty poems, and hilarious speeches had become a part of the colleges way of life.
