SS SE TTLE AC -11 The first Uss SEATTLE tArmored Cruiser Number 115. originally named Uss WASHINGTON, was built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey. Her keel Was laid On 23 September 1903, and she was launched on 18 March 1905 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Green Clay Goodlow, daughter of the senior United States Senator from the state of Washington, Mr. John L. Wilson. The cruiser was delivered to the Navy at Phila- delphia on 30 July 1906. The ship's characteristics were: length: 504 feetg beam: 73 feet, displacement 14,500 tonsg draft: 35 feetg speed: 22 knotsg and complement of 42 officers and 814 men. She was armed with four ten inch, sixteen six inch and twenty four three inch guns and four ten inch torpedo tubes. Her armor was nine inches thick. On 9 November 1916, Armored Cruiser 11 was renamed USS SEATTLE and the name WASHINGTON was yeas- signed to a new battleship. U59 SEATTLE was in the York River, Virginia when the United States entered World War One. All told, sEAT'l'LE made nine successive convoy escort voyages to Europe during the war. Following this duty she be- came receiving ship in New York and remained so until 1941 when she was reclassified as an auxiliary. Sl-IA'f l'l.l-5 remained in New York until 19-16 when her name was struck from the records and she was sold for scrap. SQ SEATTLE AOE- ,uw - A' ,ni Y. 'FS SE.-1i1 T1,E HOF-38 is a fast combat support ship designed to re-supply the ships of the attack carrier strike force with fuel oil. aircraft fuel, ordnance, frozen and fresh food and fleet freight at a rapid rate of transfer SWF U 'V'- 'U0'lill CUYHPD rigs and Cll--16's for vertical replenishment. She was constructed at the Puget Sound NHWI Shillyilrd. Bremerton, Washington. Her keel was laid October 1, 19653 on March 2 1968 she WQS Chfisffened and 'l 'f 1'f'- 'W' C0 l 'iSSi0niflg 100k DISC? On April 5, 1968 in Bremerton. Shortly afterward she sailed via the p1'ma m Canal 10 ho' h0 '0p0'1 in Noffolk- Virginia. To date, Seattle has deployed to the Med seven times. and :as been involved in numerous Atlantic Fleet operations. She has eamed the nickname King of the Med f0l' ir sum rsonic service and reliability. Seattle is presently finishing up her second grand, having replenished well over 1,000 ships since she first saw service.
