Her keel Was laid On 23 September 1903, and she was launched on 18 March 1905 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Green Clay Goodlow, daughter of the senior United States Senator from the state of Washington, Mr. John L. Wilson. The cruiser was delivered to the Navy at Phila- delphia on 30 July 1906. The ship's characteristics were: length: 504 feetg beam: 73 feet, displacement 14,500 tonsg draft: 35 feetg speed: 22 knotsg and complement of 42 officers and 814 men. She was armed with four ten inch, sixteen six inch and twenty four three inch guns and four ten inch torpedo tubes. Her armor was nine inches thick. On 9 November 1916, Armored Cruiser 11 was renamed USS SEATTLE and the name WASHINGTON was yeas- signed to a new battleship. U59 SEATTLE was in the York River, Virginia when the United States entered World War One. All told, sEAT'l'LE made nine successive convoy escort voyages to Europe during the war. Following this duty she be- came receiving ship in New York and remained so until 1941 when she was reclassified as an auxiliary.
