SHlP'S HISTORY Seattle got underway for its Med Cruise on July l2, and arrived in Rota, Spain onthe Qlst. On the 3rd of August, Seattle arrived in Palma de Mallorca for a few days of liberty and sightseeing. Many tours were afforded to Seattle's sailors while in Palma. Seattle left Palma and headed for the Gem ofthe Med, Augusta Bay, Sicily to top aff her fuel tanks. Naples, Italy was next an the agenda as Seattle anchored in Naples Bay on August llth, Commodore Taylor of CTG 63.8 came aboard in preparation for National Week, a test of the 6th Fleet's combat readiness. After National Week, Seattle returned to Naples for an extended stand-down and a rest for Seattle's sailors. Seattle anchored in Almeria, Spain harbor on September l0th. Almeria proved to be a popular liberty port, with more than an eyeful of pretty Spanish girls. Having rested in Spain, Seattle headed for the shores of Sicily again, to take on fuel at good old Augusta Bay. After Augusta, the ship headed for Taormina, Sicily, a popular vacation spot for European vacationers. German tourists seemed to abound, along with Swedish and other North Atlantic tourists. Taormina was an excellent liberty port with Mt. Etna, the still active volcano. Another fine tourist attraction was the view of Taormina Harbor. On September 23, it was time to leave Taormina and go back to w0fls, for operations in the Med. After ops, Seattle returned to Naples for some more liberty time. While at anchorage in Naples, Seattle earned awards: the Blue E in Supply, the Combat Green E in CIC, and the Damage Control DC award. FYUUCU '05 nel' 'Y' S'9l1l. US the Sl1'P got underway on November 'l5th. Seattle moored in Marseille on November 22nd. On the 23rd, a distinguished visitor embarked Seattle in the form of a French Navy Admiral: the Commandant Naval De Marseille, Admiral Tcyolcr. The American Consul General of Mar- seille arrived for a conference with Captain Mauldin onthe 29th, France proved to be great for liberty, from a leave and a tour standpoint. Many of Seattle's sailors departed for various points in Europe like Germany, England and Holland. Paris was another favorite Ploce to visit while the ship was in Marseille. Marseille, itself, had many strong points as far as sight- seeing with places like the Notre Dai-ne Cathedral and the famous Rue la Canebiere. A tour of Monte Carlo was offered by the Chaplain's Office, which also included a tour of the French Riviera, unfortu- nately without the bikinis. Seattle got underway again an December .1 with a stop in Rota. After Rota, Seattle was underway for more sea operations with the Sixth Fleet. Next up was Pqlmg dg Mollofco, ,his time fo, 0 Chris'mcs and New Yems 'eg' Palma 'GS' and Still ls- 0 favorite Place with Seattle's sailors, with atouch of home: Texas Jacl-c's. Horseback riding and other Palma tours were again taken advantage of. . Seattle left Palma right after the New Year for more sea ops and then outchop time as she anchored in Cadiz Bay, lust outside of Rota. Seattle's relief ship arrived on gi,-ne and 0 few days 'mer Secure was heading for home. Med Cruise 77 78 ended with the arrival of Seattle at Pier 3 Naval Station Norfolk, on February lst, amidst the onrush of loved ones.
