LITERARY When the call was issued For literary contestants this spring there were perhaps seven who answered it. Of these, only four finally ordered a declamatien or eration, and learned it. Due to the insufficient number who were out for the literary events, there was no local contest, except a dual contest between the two girls in the humorous declama- tion division Esther earned County Speech Contest at Joy on The four follows: Mary Garland Girls' Oratory Esther Clark Girls' Humorous Estalene Dye G1rls'.Humorcus Marvin Clark Boys' Oretery out for literary . These two were Esther Clark and Estalene Dye. the right to represent the school at the s and their reacings were as HChallenge to American Womenn nwith the Phetographorn NCh1na blue Eyesu nBuilders of Destinyn Of these ceur, the three who represented the school in the county contest did very well. Mary Garland placed second in her division, Esther Clark placed third in her division, and Marvin Clark placed third in his division. Although ne local contest was held at the high school to determine who would ge to the county, we did have a special assembly to give the speakers practice before they wont to the county. Both the high school and the grade school attended this assembly. The contestants who placed in the county received med- als for their ability. Mr. Renwick presented these medals to them on the morning of May 20, l94O. Commercial The Commercial team made commercial contests this year. at Biggsville on March 27, five placed first in the bonkkeeping individually. T J Nine schools were reprosf at Keithsburg on April 15.
