SEABREEZE Jog-A-Thon. .. Get set, co! This years Jog-A-Thon, held on Oct. 14, was a great success. The sunny day encouraged an es- timated “300” people. The students and faculty spent an hour running around the track. For weeks pledges from 5¢ to 5.00 per lap had been collected. The money will be used for senior scholarships and class treasuries. r Kerr , a Welcome Frosh Week Frosh Learn (Quickly!) The freshmen are being handed their shower caps and matching booties by their senior leaders. This frosh looks lost after a class meeting. The freshman are ac- cepting their new role in life. Kris Mayfield can’t believe that he is actually having a lot of fun at school. Mr. Odin and Mr. Gorchels are observing the sen- iors as they talk to the Frosh. Frosh In A ction This years freshmen class started off the school year by having lunch on Monday with the seniors. During this time they were handed out their name tags by their senior leaders. Tuesday the frosh learned the fight song and sang it over and over again to the seniors. On Wednesday the frosh were each issued a shower cap and matching boo- ties. During lunch on Thurs- day, the freshmen gals and guys all took turns on scrub- bing the school seal. Friday the frosh ended the week by singing the fight song and alma mater to the student body at lunch time. Through- out the week, the freshmen were teamed up with various seniors that showed some leadership to the class. Each and every freshman was giv- en a questionaire to fill out. With the help from the seniors the freshmen completed their task. 7 . : a. Sell eighty-one was a huge success with classes competing all through the week to gain points for the spirit cup. Additional events were added this year and proved to be most successful. They included the tricycle race, a pie eating con- test, an apple bob, a sleeping bag stuff, and an alma mater singing contest as well as a canned food drive, which brought in hundreds of cans to donate to the needy. A clear, starry night was the setting for the traditional bonfire’ which drew an exceptionally. large crowd. 6 The following night, students stayed up 'til all hours of the night working on hall dec@ra- tions. J On Friday, princesses, Nancy Baty, Leasia Becker, Linda Fenton, Yuki Miyokawa, and Queen Jennifer Braun reigned over the pep assembly Class competition ended with , the Freshman coming out on top. Their enthusiasm and spirit shone through even the worst of weather. Though lacking in members, their efforts were well appreciated by fans and team members alike. The rally held various pep assemblies and other spirit raising activities throughout the season. Members included Stacy Allen, De Anne Haubner, and Lisa Vaughn. ... Gull Style J.V. rally consisted of Lori Dane, Holly Trucke, Jenni Green, and Stacey Plummer. This group of girls worked extremely well together dedicating much of their time and effort in pro- moting spirit. The freshman rally as well showed much dedication and gained valuable experience that will aid them in the years to come. All in all, they had a ‘rally’ good time. Willy has two sons which he passes his dream onto. Later in life he realizes that it was a false dream. The other son still be- lieves in it, and carries it on. Outstanding per- formances were given by Doug Hauger, who played Willy Loman, Becky Mauritson, who played his wife Linda, and Biff and Happy played by Eric Polier and Peter Grant. Oth- er characters in the play were Bernard played by Aaron Han- son, The Woman, played by Chris Os- borne, Charley by Sean Adams, Uncle Ben by Larry McClug- gage, Howard Wagner by Brian Bradford, Jenny by Laura Tay- lor, Miss Forsythe by Evon Jacobson, and Letta by Julie Booth. Out of all the dramatic serious plays, this play proved to be the most successful and enjoy able. 7 . ¥ +. Living as close as we do we seem to overlook and take for granted not only it’s beauty, but the many activities and uses the beach has for us. The ocean provides a fisherman’s paradise, with crabbing, Salmon fishing, clamming, and shrimping being among the most popu- lar. As for its use recreationally, “Big Blue” does a fine job of supplying waves for surfing, boogie boarding, piper boarding, and swimming. It allows the city of Seaside to enjoy a booming tourist industry, drawing hundreds to this town each year to play along it’s shoreline. And finally, who would pass up the opportu- nity to witness a spectacular red ball of fire sinking slowly into the sea, leaving behind it the purple and pink trail of a strawberry sunset. Todd Chatalas, Dave Ar- gast, Doug Hauger, and Brian Carden, com- bined for a second place finish doing a cine- matography with their own original song en- titled “Earth Song”. And last, but not least, first place went to Michelle Meyers, who sang “My Romance”. She was accompanied by Mr. Ogren, playing the piano. Over all, it was a very productive show and most enjoy- able. This Is ._.. Education Top: Paul Webster, Leslie Osborne, Leasia Becker and Angela Frandsen were chosen as students who exemplify the skills necessary for academic excellence in the Social Sciences. The skills include research, analysis, writing, and understanding how people interact with each other. Bot- tom: Outstanding students in Foreign Language are Heidi Gann, Robert Gaston, Matt Neff and John Wickman. Not only is their written work excellent, but their oral work as well. They are always taking the initiative to engage in conversations out of class as well as in, and are having fun with it. Foreign Language Science Many students have become very dedicated to their studies in the science field. Elwin Price is one of those students, and he spends much of his time working with holography, the process of making three dimensional pictures on film with laser light. Durrell Kapan is another such student, with his in- terest being in studying which organisms in the es- tuary grow in artificial foundations. Still another student is Eric Polier who is involved in cloning a fern. All these students, and many more, spend a great deal of time on their individual projects. The Art department has produced many tal- ented people. Mike Wun- derlich and Tim Linton do exceptional work on the potters wheel. Su- zanne Parson has pro- duced several pieces of beautiful calligraphy. Known as SHS’s artists in residence are Peter Grant and Sean Adams. They have done innu- merable works for var- ious clubs and school functions. Both are pur- suing careers in Graphic Arts. Home Ke. - + Se — The Home Economics program at SHS has helped me in so many different ways. Its furthered my knowledge in child de- velopment, food preparation, food ser- vice, and gourmet foods. I’ve enjoyed cooking so much that I have decided to go to chef school in San Francisco. Mrs. Greenough, our past Home ec. teacher, was the one who inspired me. I owe all my thanks to her. Tori Holmes For the past four years I have been actively involved in the Physical Education depart- ment at Seaside High School. I plan on major- ing in this field later in college. I feel that the activities in which I have participated, will help me as I begin to teach. The Physical Edu- cation program, along with it’s staff, has helped me grow stronger, both physically and mentally. Herb Truax My four years of involvement in the athletic and physical education programs at Seaside High School have been a great experience for me. Not only have I learned just how benefi- cial extra-curricular activities are, but through them I have gained many valuable qualities. By being involved in athletics, I have developed a sense of pride in myself, my teammates, and my school. The self-esteem and positive attitude I have gained have car- ried over into all other aspects of my life. Most importantly, though, athletics have taught me how to cooperate and deal success- fully with others, as well as allowing me to develop close relationships with numerous people. Nancy Baty Music has always been an im- portant part of education at Seaside. Michelle Meyers has been an important part of the overall program in her four years here. She has participat- ed in the Choir, Jazz Choir, and many special musical groups and assemblies. Below, Ray Pierce and Todd Chatalas add too the fine qual- ity of music that is a tradition at S.H.S. These two and many oth- ers make the music programs a highly involved activity by the students. Mr. Larry Smith has provided fine leadership in the wood shop and construction classes. Under his direction, many stu- dents have advanced their skills to high levels of excel- lence. Pictured here is Rick Goolsby and below Lincoln Bowser. Both worked and fin- ished home furniture projects. Many students entered the wood shop and mechanical drawing class to develop some hobby skills. These project and basic tool operation courses are a valuable part of education. y A nS cee SHS Winter Play This year’s Seaside High Schools winter musical play was a big success. Each perfor- mance gathered a large audience each and everyday that it was held. There were three angels who won the best supporting actors award for 1982. They were Julie Booth as Purity, Leasia Becker as Virtue, and Jeanne Taylor as Chastity. Senior Craig Frary also won an award for 1982 for playing Moonface in the musical. Seaside 1. Coach Vendrell contri- buted a great deal in making their season successful by showing a lot of enthusiasm and support. The eight-way wrestling meet held here in Seaside brought out the cour- age in all the wrestlers. The scoreboard was there to prove their efforts as their team uni- ty and hard work led them toa victory. A new addition to the squad this year were ‘Pin Pals.’ They consisted of a group of girls that provided much spirit and support for the team as well as take stats and “throw in the towel.” The district tournament was held in Neah-Kah-Nie. Sea- side as a team put forth a strong performance and placed fifth in the tourney. Tom Fry and Chip Stoneman qualified for the state meet by capturing second place spots. The former wrestling at 106 pounds and the I atter at 148. Although the gulls didn’t win a lot of dual matches with Cowapa League teams, these troops received much positive feedback regarding their good manners and sportsman- ship. Chip Stoneman and Tom Fry returned from state quite pleased. Each earned a second place finish. Coach Vendrell and the returning wrestlers look forward to an even more successful season next year. The year got off to a good start, with an all school welcome back assembly. The following however, was dedicated to the welcoming and initiating of this year’s frosh. With help from the seniors, the entire class participated in such tradditional events as the scrubbing of the school seal and the singing of the school songs. Other such weeks set aside for special activities included “Homecoming Week”, “Christmas Week”, and “Sea Week”, all of which went over well. At SHS, pep assemblies have always played an impor- tant part in stimulating athletes to perform their best, and this year was no exception. Original skits, dance routines, and yell contests, made up their agendas. After athletic teams finished their seasons, they were honored at special assemblies, and those who had won trophies at district or state levels, used this time to present them to parents, teachers, and the student body. Two Jazz bands visited our school this year. We gladly welcomed back the Air Force band for the third year in a row with a most enthusiastic crowd. A second band from New York called Isotope also performed. Other areas of interest presented included a Shake- spearean performance, three Nuclear War presenta- tions, Career Day, Jack Ramsey discussing sportman- ship, A State College Visitation, a film presentation entitled “Everyday Heroes”, and a panel of past SHS graduates who spoke and gave tips about their first years in college. Still other special activities held were the Jog-a-thon, the Cabaret, the Talent Show, the A.S.B. Caucus party conventions and elections, and the Portland Timbers, who played a match of volley- ball against the faculty, the Seaside Rotary Club, and selected student council members, using only their heads and feet. And finally, to give recognition to seniors and under- classmen who have done outstanding work, the Annu- al Awards Assembly was held in the spring. Seniors returned to receive scholarship money as well as awards for accomplishments while in high school. a -@ a BY 2 . - + ¢ 1. The jazz choir performs at the S.H.S. Cabaret. 2. Their presence has added greatly to our student body. Yuki Miokowa was from an all girls school in Japan. She has been a member of the girls softball and vol- leyball teams here at SHS. Marcello Frey, from Brazil, has been a mem- ber of the boys cross country and track teams. Jaime Orendain was from Mexico. He was very helpful to the foreign language classes and club. All three students were warm, friendly people who have added much to our school. Jazz Choir Headed by vocal music director Jon Ogren, the S.HLS. Jazz Choir added still another enjoyable and successful year to their list of many. The group held performances in a variety of places. Such outings included a trip to Lloyd Center in Portland at Christmastime. They performed in the Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts, as well as the S.H.LS. Cabaret. The outstanding group of individuals also raised enough money to take a trip to Ellensburg, Washington, as part of a retreat. The talent displayed and contributed by each member was most superb, and will be missed tremendously when some of them graduate. Computer Club A new club added to S.H.S.’s list of many is the computer club. The computer craze that has spread across the coun- try has affected students at Seaside High as well. Fifteen persons joined together with advisor Jim Troffiter and formed the new club. Togeth- er they studied the many pos- sibilities and workings of the computer, in addition to pool- ing enough money to pur- chase some new computer discs. President Nancy Baty, par- ticipants in Student Council for the school year 1981-82, set out to get things done, and they did just that. Goals were set, and with the cooperation of the student body and faculty, they were accomplished. There were various fund raisers all proving to be successful. Aside from the usual bake sales and cake raffles, they added some new events: among these were Christmas week, and senior citizen lunch. Student Council invited a new wave rock group called the Blenders to perform at a dance, and invited them back a second time. Camfel Produc- tions, a Los Angeles movie company, enter- tained the student body with a rock cine- matography film called “Everyday He- roes”. And, the Portland Timbers came and played 3 games of volleyball against the faculty, the Seaside Rotary, and selected Student Council members. With all the money raised from their ef- forts Student Council purchased a stereo system, materials for a signboard in front of the school, and supplies used for the mu- ral design in the cafeteria created by Peter Grant and Sean Adams. Student Council leaders can easily be credited for a job well done. Nancy Baty Jeanne Taylor Becky Mauritson Jodi Brady Todd Chatalas J.P. Lannigan Academics .. Pay-Off Every spring, students, fac- ulty, and members of the community, unite together to honor those students who have achieved excellence in various fields of study. The variety includes academics, leadership, athletics, charac- ter, music, and drama. At this time not only do seniors re- turn to receive scholarship money and awards for achievements during their high school career, but out- standing underclassmen are recognized as well. This spe- cial day reflects the many ac- complishments and goals that have been reached by the stu- dents and is an opportunity to say “Thank you for a job well done!” SENIOR SCHOLASTIC ) : AWARDS 1982 a Fenton Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design Academic Scholarship . . . .Sean Adams United States Merchant Marine Academy Academic Scholarship Heidi Gann Sia | 4 i ng Senior : nic Scholarshi dan St. Olaf College Academic M holarship crngr’s Scholar University of Portland Academic Scholarship Laura Johns ( jeorge Fox Ac ademic Scholarship Holly Maine Gonzaga University torian Award Academic Scholarship United States Merchant Marine ictorign Aw Academy Academic Scholarship NM Willamette University dents Honor Scholarship Seaside High School en Jog-a-Thon Scholarships ©... 6-6 2+ ee Sean Adams T Pihalisy Leasia Becker Peter Grant ’ : p sine Holly Maine Honors at Entrance Becky Mauritson Margie Morris Michelle Myers A . : : i : : Kerry Ruch Arthur Fertig Scholarship Alternate Linda Fenton Clatsop Community College Honor Society Leadership Award Sean Adams Board Scholarships. .....------ +--+ Linda Fenton Rhonda Horn Leslie Osborne ay Pierce | b : oe Sund Outstanding Senior Voca shelle Myers Jess . 1?
