| j 7 { i Wie ' ij | ‘ { t ’ } j ’ { i ely | | . | This is our school. We are one. We are a school with ambition that works together to accomplish a unified goal. We are a school with spirit and pride to support our athletes, our scholars, and our Communi- ty. The years we spend in school are the years that we will remember for a lifetime. Many people will look back on their high school years and cherish the moments they spent reminiscing in the cafeteria about the classes they took, the ever famous break. Surely they will remember the food fights at lunch, the practice before the big game, the cham- pionships we won and should have won, the spirit cup, the dances, registration, report cards, and graduation. These memories will fill your life with happiness and cheer. To remem- ber the precious moments that were shared is to bring back the laughter and the tears. For school is not only a time for learning, but also a time for growing and living life as it comes. Here is our record of the school year 1979-1980 as seen through the eyes of the Seabreeze Annual Staff. Princioals Mr. Harold Riggan, our Principal, strikes a familiar pose during a moment of deep thought. One of the important qualities about Mr. Riggan is that he makes himself available at almost all times to be of help to students and staff alike. He likes everyone to know that he is there. Mr. Riggan’s friendly, personable, and helpful manner is an as- set to Seaside High School, and to our District. ' Gr: What may look like a beckoning smile, a. may just possibly be a “Come in and tell me about your unexcused absences” smile, coming from Mr. Carl Odin, Seaside High School's Student Personnel Director. Yes, Mr. Odin is the person in charge of discipline and absences in our school, but he does have a winning smile and a good sense of humor. He is always one fo listen to what a student has to say and is understanding. (Mr. Odin is also the person responsible for the excellent plays which our students participate in each year and which the school and community enjoy so much.) “You say the bus is late for the Area Center again?’’ These could very well be the words coming from Mr. Ed Rippet, our Assistant Principal. Mr. Rippet is responsible for many, many duties at S.H.S. Some of these duties include daily opera- tion of the building, student activities, Area Vo- cational Center, and many more. Mr. Rippet is observed by most of our students daily during lunch hour; he not only keeps an eye on the students’ behavior at lunch time but chats ami- ably with students and is a helpful friend in case of any problems. Even though the win lose total did not show the fine efforts of the team. They needed more consistant play to win more games. There were some out- standing performances from many of the players throughout the sea- son. One of the highlights was the 13-6 victory over Tillamook on their Homecoming. They improved 100% from the beginning to the end of the season. They were starting to set the ball-up and were learning to play the game in an aggressive diving and sliding way. A very pleasant group to work with was their coaches comment. The JV football team members gained valu- able experience for their future varsity games, even though they didn’t win a game. The team consisted of many young players who showed improvement after playing their six games. The coaches were Mr. McClellan and Mr. O'Dell. = —F } unl y “ AS N by, ({ Fall Soorts Awara's CFF ere ee Top left: Varsity Football Rally - Cindy Banks, Tami Carlson and Renee Gaston take a break. In the past years, volleyball has been just another sport, but the girls really worked hard and made it a respectable sport for Seaside High. Due to a lack of height, the girls won most of their games on sheer guts and determination. The girls made two special trips this year. One, ‘The Warren- ton Invitational’, the girls took first place. And the second, ‘Portland State Invitational’, the girls took eighth of sixteen mixed triple, double and single A teams. The girls’ league record this year was 12 wins and 4 losses which gave them third place in the Cowapa League Volleyball Tournament. Their overall season record was 17 wins and 8 losses. When asked about next years goal, Coach Hamer replied, “Considering triple A team Astoria coming into our league, Our goal would be to make the state play-offs.’’ By the look of things, the returning bump, set, and spikers have their work cut out for them. But as far as this year goes, they should be congratulated on a job well done. “Chris’’ Cross Country Front row: Jimmy Adams, Todd Chatalas, Elwin Price, Doug Hauger, Scott Pachal, Duane Dickens, Jeff Carow, Robert Gaston, Tony Hendryx, Jeff Dilley. All the way to State for our girls’ Varsity Cross Country team. This year’s Girls Cross Country team won the Cowapa League Championship. Finishing close behind were St. Mary’s, Rainier and St. Helens. They qualified for the State Meet held at Lane Community College and finished in tenth place. The Boys team finished in fifth place in the Cowapa League. Some of the highlights of the season will be remembered by the team members for years to come. These included the Sea- side Invitational at Coffenbury Lake, the trip to Madras for their Invitational with many teams from throughout the state of Or- egon and the girls team winning the Taft Cross Country meet with the boys finishing second. Many long hours of training and a lot of miles were logged by members of this year’s team. Pride in conditioning was one of the positive attitudes that the team adopted. 4. Although severely hampered by a lack of wres- tlers, Seaside made a great showing this year. By way of forfeits in various weight classes, the Gulls lost at least eighteen and up fo thirty team points per tournament. But they managed to come out on top in several matches. When they lost, the score was close Four of Seaside’s finest went to the State AA Tournament in Springfield. Three of them placed, putting Seaside in eighth place out of the more than fifty attending the meet. The four participants were Mark Jenson, at 115 Ibs., who placed 2nd at district and 2nd at state; Robbie Moore, at 123 Ibs., who placed ‘4st at district and 3rd at state; John Reierson, at 1914 Ibs., who placed ‘st at district and 3rd at state; and Robert Ellis, Seaside’s heavyweight, who placed ‘(st at district but failed to place at state. 4. The Carnival was a very popular event. 59 NOV. 17 2: 30 MMA INEE MAATINEE HALF Fosties e- em Lrama 1980 This was a very exciting year for drama. It started out with a stunning performance of The Diary of Anne Frank. The play was a thriller portraying two Jewish families hiding out in Germany in World War Il. The whole cast can be proud of their memorable production. The spring musical, Oklahoma! was truly a break- through in high-school productions. It was a rousing ex- perience with love, suspense, and joy. Dayna Nelson and Tom Heffernan played the romantic leads. Teter Kapan, Peter Grant, Craig Frary, and Chris Mespelt played the comic leads. Jud, the villian portrayed by Scott Ayles, was naturally hated by everyone. And with a dynamic chorus the show ended with the rafter raising title song Oklahoma!! 61 Dinner Theatre The drama department, and the food service class made a first for Seaside High. They produced a din- ner theatre, the play was called “The Tender Trap” Scott Ayles did a com- mendable as the swinging bachior. Mike Nantz played the confused, wide eyed husband. This was the last performance for seniors Teter Kapan, and Wendy Mckennon. Their contribu- tion to the drama depart- ment has been fantastic and will be missed greatly.
