There was an abundance of par- ticipation in all activities. The scores were figured on a percentage basis pleasing most of the students more than the old systems. The sophomores received the spirit cup which was quite a difference from the years past. The week ending well with the Seagulls defeating the Clatskanie Tigers 27-12. 14 Homecoming Brad Harris and Kristina Schneider Benny and Julie dress up in 1950's. Guess who? Suzanne Gabriel hangs in there. Teresa Black gives a sigh after a successful catch. Kim McVey starts for the apple dunk. The senior class was out in force. From Oregon City came the new head football coach Mike Corrigan who brought to the gulls an entire new offensive formation. Although with a season record of 2-7, the gulls had a successfull season. Football The J.V. football team improved greatly through the year. After a opening game loss to Scappoose 29 to 0, they finished the season with a 2-4 record, including two wins over Tillamook. 1. The total number of students participating was the highest ever. Voted most honorary co-captains at the Banquet were Bruce Holt and Peggy Chest- nut. Most Inspirational were Bridget Gallinger, Bruce Holt, and Peggy Chestnut. 24 Cross Country Varsity Volleyball Coach Irene Holland presented several awards at the '76’ Fall Sports awards dessert held in the cafe- teria. Recieving them were Sue Dichter (honorary captain), Lorrie Phillips (most improved), and Julie Mespelt (most inspirational). Though the season didn’t go as well as was hoped, with a record of 2-20, it wasn’t a total loss. Vollyball team ended the year with 8 and 14 season record. Among those recieving awards at the Sports awards Banquet were Cindy Scott with most inspirational and also being voted honorary captain. The Seaman put out a great effort but the Junemores put it all together for at 21-0 victory. 1. Linda Johns takes a handoff from Lorri Howarth 2. Junemores are radient over their victory 3. ‘Quick, what dol do?”’ ‘ Aftermath of a Junemore success Girls in 509 The Seaside High School Drama Department put on their first presentation, ‘‘The girls in 509’’. This play concerned two ladies of staunch Re- publican sensibilities, at the time of Roosevelt’s election, they shut themselves off totally from a world they fear faces certain doom at the hands of the Democrats. The cast was Carrie Easley, Tony Tillman, Wendy Krieger, Don Lathrop, Bob Silva, Pat Mespelt, Teter Kapan and Jeff Roberts. SZ eM NWOMEN Varsity Basketball The boys varsity basketball squad finished the season winless in league play and with an overall record of 1-21. Coach Larry Elliott enjoyed working with this years team and said they lacked experience but worked hard and improved considerably. Basketball The J.V. basketball team finished the season with a league record of four wins and six losses, and an overall mark of 11-11. J.V. coach Ed Johnson enjoyed the year and had fun working with the team. The overall record didn’t indicate the strength of the sophomores because some of them also saw varsity action. 1. More than One hundred students danced to the sounds of shifter. Representing the court was junior Debbie Webb, sophomore Pam Laws, and fresh- man Tracy Culp. Wrestling The 1976-77 Wrestling season was most suc- cessfrul. Coaced by Kurtis Saiki and assisted by Chuck Mattocks, the gulls win record far ex- ceeded that of their losses. Going to the State tournament were Mark Jenson, Dave Hill, Dave Osterblad, Craig Holt, Russ Lende, Bill Krfieger who took fifth place, and Dave Como who brought home a fourth place. This was the largest team ever sent by Seaside. They finished second in the Cowapa League which was quite an improvement from the previous years. Voted best defensive player was Kelee Spillman, best offensive Teresa Black, mostinspirational Bridget Gallinger, mostvaluable Sue Dichter and Barb Bailey, Julie Hought and Erin Shucker were named most improved. 1. Basketball The girls junior varsity team placed first in the Cowapa League under the coaching of Jenny Hamer. This was the second year Mrs. Hamer has coached the JV girls. At the sports awards banquet Collette Odegard recieved two awards, one for most inspir- ational, and the other for most improved. Most valuable was Tina Jameson. 1. Center: Coach Virginia Hamer 3 4 Varsity Rally There were 7 different members of the varsity rally squad of 1976-77. The members included captain Suzy Laws, Mary Jean McEwan, Alice Porter, Katie Ames, Debbie Webb, Dorthy Gough, and Theresa Zwalen. Praised by the varsity basketball coach as one of the finest ever the girls did a great job of cheering for both foot- ball and basketball. Varsity Rally 45 J.V. Rally The 1976-77 J.V. Rally consisted of Rennay Turk, Nancy Dueber, Tami Kaino, and Pam laws. Cheering for both football and basketball they did a terrific job. Topping off their year as J.V. rally they held a spagetti feed for the J.V. basketball team. . Ag, . ae ? ‘gl = 5 46 J.V. Not Pictured is Debbie Hauger members are Suzanne Gabriel, Candy Jones, Mary Appel, and Sue Sopko Gong Show One of the most successful fund raising activi- ties in Seaside High’s history was the first annual Gong Show, put on by the senior class. A crowd of about 600 people attended the show to raise over $400.00 for the senior class trip. The winning act out of 15 participants was Dede and Company with their own version of John Denver's, ‘‘Eagle and the Hawk.”’ ] Judges Carl Odin waltz to the winning act 2. Jeff Pitney shows his supreme talent by blowing two trumpets Dede and Company did a splendid job in their winning effort Old McDonalds crew entered the contest and was Gonged instantly! Talent Show The 4th Annual Talent Show was won by Klye Weston, with his drum solo. Bill Nimmo hosted the show and also played 3 entertaining selections. The Stage Band and Jazz Ensemble opened the show with a few selections. The 2nd place winner was Kay Nibert, who did a solo to ‘‘Your Song’’. Kim Demars placed 3rd with her solo to ‘‘Send in the Clowns’’. Other contestants were Sue Ordway, Susan Kennedy, Don Lathrop and Group, Heidi Packard, Macey Bradley, Mike Zarko and Chuck Baliconis, and Lance Miller and Group. The Talent Show was a money making project put on by the Jazz Ensembles. Choir Jazz Ensambles The Seaside High Choir and Jazz Ensambles were very busy this year. Highlighting the year for the jazz participants was a trip to Cali- fornia and receiving a second place award at Mt. Hood Community College. Amoung other activities was the Pop’s Concert held annually in which both choir and jazz participate. Lead by Kathleen Hogsett the groups had a very successful year and enjoyed it tremendously. Band Having both Jerry Hogsett and Alan Corwin teaching band this year was quite an asset. Something new for the football season was a marching band at halftimes which was organized by Mr. Corwin. The band also performed at the annual Pop's Concert. LTT 7 0 aah Campaign 77 The ASB conventions for 1977-78 went well. The representatives from the Responsive Party were; for president Troy Oesterblad, vice president Russ Lende, secretary Roni Anderson, treasurer Nancy Dueber, and sargent of arms Pat Nolan and Gary Ordway. For the Activists party were Pat Mespelt for presi- dent, vice president Laurie Mespelt, treasurer Cheryl Campbell, secretary Lynelle Neitzel, and for sargent of arms Gary Zimmerman and Ken Mendanhall. The new ASB officers for 77-78 are Troy Oesterblad, Russ Lende, Roni Anderson, Gary Ordway and Pat Nolan. ‘ . = ee “7 . a S$. V4 Ny} i y | U) 54 Campaign 1. Jodi Nickens and company get rowdy 2. With the theme of ‘‘The Best of My Love”’ many couples enjoyed the music by Chaser. Something else that was a first for the high school was three prom queens, including Julie Mespelt, Sandy Dick, and Gayle Hought. pring Sports Varsity Baseball The 1977 Varsity Baseball team finished an impressive season ending the year with a 9-6 league record. Going down to the final games of the season they were in first place but then wound up in second. Awarded most valuable player at the awards banquet was Andy Dueber, most improved and best defensive went to Danny McDonald, Dave Oesterblad took home the Mr. Hussle award, and receiving most inspirational was Richard Whitlock. Amoung those chosen for the Cowapa League first team were Craig Holt, Steve Foley, Dave Oesterblad, and Richard Whitlock. sepia J.V. Baseball The J.V.’s finished the season perfect in league play with a record of 8-0 under their new coach Dan Skipper. In non-league action Skipper’s team had an 11-9 mark. Participating in Junior Varsity baseball were second row: Coach Dan Skipper, Dave Hughes, Derrick Ray, Gary Zimmerman, Pat Spillman, Scooter Haller, Wade Halbrook, Mike Riggan, David Haskell, Jimmy Nichols, Mark Adams, Jerry Painter, Steve Rush, Don Doyle. First row: Chuck Carey, John Lende, Thad Nolan, David Larson, Mike Maine, Ernie Nichols, Mike Neimi, Greg Koch, and Andrew Black. Girls Softball The 1977 Girls Softball Team finished a very successful season placing first in the Cowapa League. Returning as coach again this year was Jenny Hamer. The girls who participated this year were as follows: LeAnn Cochran, Sally Brown, Erin Shucker, Sherry Justice, Teresa Black, Julie Hought, Loreen Walters, Sue Haskell, Diana Brown, Jill Gann, Tami Kaino, Tina Jameson, Pam Kan, Linda Johns, and Roni Anderson. Varsity Golf Boys Golf - The Boys Varsity Golf team cap- tured second place at the State Golf Tournement held at Slendover. Low scorers for the Gulls at the State Tournement were Brent Bichter and Kyle Weston who had a 161 total each. Guy Sturgeon, Rich Walsburn and Roy Billings were the others that made the trips to state. Seaside complied a 16-2 record on the way to the second place at state. Their only losses were to two triple A teams. They were undefeated in the Cowapa League. ! 6 ore? ee Ve pai os jb oe 3 Bettas Oo Girls Golf The Girls Golf team closed their season undefeated in Cowapa League action with a record 6-0. Their all around record was 8-2. The girls were led by Sue Dichter who finished 10th in the State Tournement. Others participating on the Girls Golf team were Suzann Gabriel; Kim Maki, Dani Sayer, Jan McCollum, Deana Scheif and Kelee Spillman. sete Ceol ewes ita. i. Or Peat be yn ae AST Caer me Girls Track Coached by Larry McClellan the girl’s track team had the most successful season of all. The girls were undefeated in dual league meets and were Cowapa League champions at both the beginning and the end of the season. Several outstanding performances were given through- out the season by certain members of the team such as Peggy Chesnut in the hurdles, Kim Johnson in sprints and Alice Porter in the long distances. Boys Track The boys track team had quite a successful season sending a number of men to the state meet. Although the season record did not show it Coach Gene Gilbertson Had some outstanding performances given by most of the members on the team. Those breaking or establishing new records were Scott Chesnut in the Inter- mediate Hurdles, Jon Gabriel in the High Jump, and Dennis Braun in the Two Mile run. We do not remember days, we remember moments.
