The 10 contestants were chosen in January from the Senior girls to compete for the title. They spent a busy month attending luncheons , speaking engagements , and practicing for the actual Pageant, They also appeared on Telescope TV. The day of the Pageant they attended the judges luncheon and had swim suit competition and interviews with the judges. Saturday evening the competition was narrowed to five finalist, who were each asked a question to answer spontaneously. They were then judged on their poise, ingenu- ity, and personality. Was that lonely woman really me? Then the busy years went rushing by us, Through the door there came familiar laughter, We lost our star emotions on the way, I saw your face and heard you call my name, If by chance I'd see you in the tavern, Oh, my friend, we're older but no wiser, We'd smile at one another and we'd say- For in our hearts the dreams are still the same. Those were the days my friend, Those were the days my friend, We'd thought they'd never end, We thought they'd never end, We'd sing and dance forever aday, We'd sing dance forever aday, We'd live the life we choose, We'd live the life we'd choose, We'd fight and never lose, We'd fight and never lose, For we were young sure to have our way. Those were the days, ohyes, those were the days. a i INTERNATIO Martha Vasconcellos, representing Brazil, was crowned Miss Universe 1968 at the Miss Universe Beauty Pag eant in Miami Beach, Florida Pope Paul VI shakes hands with Dr. Christiaan Barnard during a private audience at the Vatican.
