The Gulls then traveled to Bandon where they met the Tigers in the semi-final playoff game. This game ended the Gulls winning streak and the season as they were defeated 12-0, The Seasider's put together a very fine defense this year, which was noted throughout the state. The offense started out slow, but gained momentum as the season went by. One of the highlights of the season came when the Seagulls de- feated the North Catholic Royals on their home field, But pro- bably the biggest highlight of the season came when the Gulls won won the chance to play the quarter-final and semi-final games. ''The season was thoroughly successful and the seniors on this years team wish the team next as much success as this season, HONORARY CAPTAIN (far left) RON SOPKO MOST INSPIRATIONAL PLAYER GARY HANSEN A 4 A , “ 4 ) iy wh iba) i ie ey = D9 5 AO 5 SO ret et 1 tor, Coach Neal Maine, W. The Gulls started out the year ranked third in the state, As league play rolled around, the Seagulls seemed to lose part of their strength shown at the begining of the season, Throughout league play they had their ups and downs, finally ending up with a 4-4 record. This is the first time in the last six years the Gulls haven't made the league playoffs. Of course, there are some high spots in the basketball season, The second game of the season was one for the Gulls as they tromped over Estacada, whodid the same to the Gulls last year, The Seaside-Warrenton games always prove exciting and this year was noexception, The Gulls split a pair with the Warriors this year, Probably the biggest moment came when the Gulls traveled to Nestucca(2nd rated in the state) and pulled out a win to be one of the two teams tobeatthe Bobcats this year, This is the first time a Seaside team has beaten the Bobcats on their home court, The Gulls, by no means, had a losing season, They ended up with a 14-6 win lose record. The bid for a state championship to cap retiring coach Ev Clarry's fine years at the helm fell short when the Seagulls were stopped in the quarter final playoff game by the Sherwood Bowmen, The team selected senior Steve Phillips as Honorary Captain and Jim Cole, only four-year letterman on the squad, as Most Inspirational Player. STEVE PHILLIPS - HONORARY CAPTAIN JIM COLE - MOST INSPIRATIONAL PLAYER (not pictured) ANS th The Seagull thinclads hada very good season this year, which was climaxed by a district championship, andthe sending off eight men to the state track meet in Corvallis, The Gulls lost only one dual meet this year, that being to an A-1 school. They placed second in the Astoria and St, Helens Relays and won the sub-district track meet. Out of the eight men who participated in the state meet only one made the finals. This is the most men the Gulls have quali- fied for the state meet. Three of those eight will return next year and will make up the nucleus of the track squad. .
