Under the leadership of Ralph Kent student body president the rest of the student body officers carried out their various duties. ' The other officers were Larry Lund vice president' Betsy Jefferis secretary' Fred Adolf sergeant at arms' Carolyn Smith musician. This year Mr. John Jandrall took over the position of student council adviser. First was the annual Christmas Concert held during the pre-Christmas week. When the holiday season was over Miss Treva Rice busied her students in preparation for the district music contest at New- berg on April 2l. The last program of the year was the Spring Concert on May l6. The room was decorated to the theme of Marshmallow World with a large marshmallow throne in one corner ot the room. False walls and ceiling were made ot light and dark blue crepe paper streamers with the imitation marshmallow name plaques on the walls. Blue lights completed the effect. Of the 7, 2 were league and 2 were district. The other 3 were pre-season Kings-X tilts 2 with Lincoln of Portland. The Gulls opened the l95l campaign at the Lower Colum- bia League Jamboree held in St. Helens, where they defeated Scappoose 23-l7. Then came a series of 7 pre-season games. Of the seven, the Gulls won 4, defeating Forest Grove twice Camas and Washington of Portland. The team lost twice to Lincoln and once to Hillsboro, On January 5, the Seagulls opened the 5l league season with a 52-42 win over St. Helens on the Seaside floor, Dick Carp- enter scored 20 points to lead the victors. The following night Clatskanie fell to Seaside by a 5l-4l score. Then a 56-26 win over Vernonia and a 69-53 victory at Scappoose, with Carpenter scoring 22 points. made it 4 wins against no losses in the league, On January 20 after 3 consecutive road games, the Gulls lost at home to Parkrose 56-40. The next week the Gulls overcame a tough obstacle by defeating Rainier on their small floor, 54-48. On February 3, the Seagulls outscored St. Helens, 67-46. Dick Carpenter collected 2l points and Ralph Kent l9 to pace the league leaders. The next night at home. the team suffered the worst defeat of the season, losing to Clatskanie 36-29. A week later, however, the Gulls were again on the road of victory with a smashing 60-28 win at Vernonia. Astoria also fell to the Seaside boys. The Gulls did,n't live up to expectations in league play, losing several games on bad breaks. One such game was lost to Scappoose with the winners getting only one hit. The team beat Astoria in their first match and tied and lost to Warrenton in their second and third matches. Paul Eckman, Dick Kari, Denny l-lolmes, and Leroy Miller traveled to Eugene in May to compete in the state golf tourna- ment. . The boys who received letters in golf were Dick Kari, Dick Maize, Leroy Miller, John Danielson, Paul Eckman and Denny Holmes.
