THE WNDJAMM R LITERARY FIRE PREVENTION The observance of Fire preventlon Week comes on the week contaunnng one of the greatest fnre catastrophe that ever hap pened In thus nation This was the Chicago Conflagratuon of1871 Whether this was caused by Mrs Q Leary s cow klcklng over the lantern or by spontaneous combustion was never known Cn Sunday Qctober 8 1871 a fire began and remalned burnlng for three days It burned over three and one half square mules of land Q50 llves were lost and almost 100 000 people homeless destroying everything IH Its path Damages to property valued at about 175 000 000 dollars Qctober 9 1911 was the IDDOVGEIOI1 about by a suggestion from the flre Marsh alls Assoclatlon of North America to re mind the people about the great Chicago disaster Twenty two states corresponded Immediately to the suggest1on of the flre Marshalls Association Today over 10 000 cltles and towns take part ID flre prevention week Civic organizations fire department committees raduo and the press all are active rn tryung to prevent fires ln Los Angeles they have organized the Fire Preventmon, Junror firemen movement Through this movement they enlust the ard of school children to help fund fare hazards The chlldren funding the most hazards receive Junuor Flreman tltles up to chief ln four years these children found 387 000 hazards In homes IF one out of every ten of the hazzards had turned Into a flre the loss would have been approximately 7 000 000 dollars Fire Prevention means the savung of lives property and natural resources from d struction, by needless flres l IS hard realize that over 10000 llves are lost annually and that there IS an economic waste of several bllllons of dollars by needless flres caused through our careless ness It IS up to you and l to co operate with the CIVIC organizations and other fure prevention groups This IS the only way that we can reduce the loss of llves and money All there IS for us to do IS to obey the fare preven tion laws Make It a family project and check your of no possible causes of spontaneous com bustlon check wlrlng for defects clean up all unnecessary combustible substances such as waste paper and rags Make sure of good ventllatlon where nt IS necessary Inspect carefully heating and cooking ap pllances Be exceeding careful of all out door fires making sure they are thoroughly out when you leave them and above all do not be a careless smoker If you follow these and a few other simple flre preventlon laws you may save a life this llfe may be your own or the llves of your loved ones So lets all get together and make this the greatest fare prevention week that there has ever been only dont stop wlth thus week we must prevent flres every week of our llves Janet Rogers 55 23 l E . , , . , 4 . E WINDJAMM FIRE PREVENTION The neon lIghts of the cIty slowly faded away as Thomas WIllIdmS drove towards hIs farm In the country l-le had been to a Itre preventnon meetlng and was thInlcIng baclc to what they had dIscussed CertaIn rules had been brought up such as what to do IH case ol lure smolcIng In bed heatIng and coolclng hazards electrlcal wIrIng' he remembered he had Intended to have someone checlt hIs wIrIng for a long tlme but just hadnt had tIme They had stressed thIs especlally at the meetIng But he thought brIngIng hImself baclc o t e present l wouldnt ha e a e start In my house l never have so why careful and we dont go around startlng lures It happens to other people but not t3 us As he came closer to hIs house he started to speed up thInl4Ing what It somethlng dld go wrong wIth the wIrIng whIle l was away7 l-lIs home barn hIs tamIly he cattle all he possessed and cherlshed were there and would be destroyed By thls tIme he was practlcally llylng As e started up a hIll gettlng closer to hIs home he slowed down a bIt and was thInl4Ing about hIs 5 year old son, Ted l-le had come home lrom school today tallclng about hre preventlon As young as he was, he lcnew haw d6StFUCtlV2 a llre could be As he got nearer to hls home he saw a small blaze, It looked as It It was comlng from hls barn, but no, It couldnt be hls barn It must be a nelghbors house Dd l remember to pay the Insurance on the farm? If It IS our house what caused It? he wIrIng? Cr was It the hay In the barn l thought It was dry enough when we put It In but where we had so much wet weather m e lfS stlll damp Then agaln the oIl burner mlght have gone out and my wIle mlght have turned It up too hlgh and flooded It CGUSIDQ a lure and exploslon Maybe Ted and hls lrIends were playlng wxth matches IU the barn These thoughts raced through hls head as he contlnued up the road l-le couldnt tell yet whose house It was Then he could see It wasnt hls farm It was hIs nelghbors l-le parlted hls car and hurrled to has wnle and son who were startlng out to help the neIghbors l-le threw hls arms around them and told them how glad he to elp hIs nelghbor The hre was ID the garage and had just started so they were able to prevent It from spreadlng very much The next day Thomas WIllIdmS and h s Son Ted went IDtO the CItY checlced th Insurance and hlred an electrlclan to chec the wIrIng Thls taught Mr WITlIdmS a lesson he wlll never forget Jamce Stone 58 DANGER THREATENS A few more steps and we would be at the top ol the mounta1n Ir had been a hard cllmb and we vvere tlred lm glad our follcs all chose to stay at Brown Lalce thIs summer, so we could be together l-lelen saId l am, too .lane saId lm also happy T I-I E R 21 A ' ' .
