22 THE WINDJAMMER gang and another lad borrowed thelr father s cars They had gone onlx a short dlstance when a loud report was heard from a rear t1re of the leadlng car The blow out was soon repalred and they started on thelr way They f1nally reached the dlrt road that led to the old haunted house Flndlng the road lmpassable the boys cl1mbed out and began trudg mg along the road To top It all off ll began to ra1n The blg drops came down as lf the clouds had been torn asunder and 'ill the water was falhng at once The flat t1re and the long hlke had delayed the boys and so lt was now growlng dark Flnally thelr goal was reached The boys had lost most of the enthuslasm wlth whlch they had started out They were Just a httle t1m1d about approachmg the closed door Ned was the f1rst one to try the door It d1d not open readrly and so he gave a push w1th hls shoulder It suddenly flew op n w1th a loud bang' As they stepp d mto th doorway a flash of l1ghtn1ng stabb d across the sky followed by a burst of thunder Thxs put the boys nerves on edge daxllght the boys had brought no flashhghts As they grop d thexr way, along the hallwax one of th m stumb bled onto the stalrs Th x b gan ascend1ng th stalrs lmmedlatelx b caus all th storxes connected w1th the place mdleatecl that th murder room w as upsta1rs Thxs w as the mam Intel' st of th bovs Aboxe th sound of the creakmg stalrs th boxs heard a n'uffled far awav sound They stopped and sure enough thex heard lt agaln It was almost lflalldlble Could lt be DO5Slbl6 that the murderer had returned?
