For many years we have looked forward to this day of happiness and achievement, but now that the zenith of our high school career has been attained, we are doubtful as to what the ensuing years hold in store for all of us. JROBERT BAILLARGEON 46 1953 CLASS HISTORY ODAY on our Class Day as we look forward to the future, it is only proper that we spend a few moments in reflecting upon the outstanding events of the past three years, here at Searles High Sdhool. I11 October of 1950, we held an election of unrealized im- portance, that is, we chose our most stable students to lead us as class otticers and members of the Student Council. Our President was Robert Baillargeong Vice President was Sally Lowe,g Secretary, Joyce Goudyg Treasurer, Carolyn Assaf, and on the Student Council were Dorothy Giles and Paul Consentino. Following the election, almost as an installation of these officers, was a Sophomore reception, at which we were greeted and welcomed most heartily by the Senior President, Timothy D'Neal. Making peace with the tradition that we Sophomores were babies, Robert Baillargeon proudly accepted a Yo-Yo. Soon afterward, as the result of a broken boiler. we were rewarded with an unexpected vacation. I believe that this was to begin our came paign for a badly needed new High School. At an open house, one eve- ning, all parents and interested towns people were invited to inspect our poor building conditions, and finally, on March 21st, the appropriation for the new school was passed. During this year, the three class parties, which had previously been annual events, were combined into one Talent Nighte -a definite success. In April, the Student Council received attractive pins, the giving of which was another first for the school. The Girls' Athletic Association, unable to hold its usual exhibition, sponsored a dance with the well known disc-jockey, Bob Clayton. As the school year came to a close, our deserving classmate, Audrey Pickles, was presented with the Good Citizenship Medal by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Thereupon, as we watched the Seniors file past, we climbed one rung of the ladder, before leaving our established schedule for our summeir vacation. YVitl1 the gaiety of the beautiful autumn foliage which surrounds Searles High School, we students returned to classes to renew our search for knowledge in September of 1951. The only change in our class otlic- ers was the position of Vice President, given to Carol Dennis, and we elected to the Student Council Norman NVaites, Audrey Pickles and Rob- ert Clarke. The next event of exceptional importance to us all was the selection of our class rings by the ring committee. The monogram on these gold rings is a tower, superimposed by an M, This tower symbolizes the benefaction of the late Edward F. Searles. I know that most of us have worn these rings with a feeling of deep pride and distinction. 47 MHS The social whirl went on. First came the Military liall, at which our girls were extremely proud of their fellow class-mates, so changed in their impressive Cadet uniforms. The grand march was led by Nicholas liuglione and .loan llabeeh, and Company D, headed by Donald Schmott- lach, won the prize drill. Next was the Band Dance, at which our hand and majorettes gave their usual lille performance. The remainder of our Junior year passed very much the same as our Sophomore year and Audrey Pickles once more received the Good Citi- zenship Medal. It was when graduation day came for the class of ,52, that we, the! class of '53, suddenly realized our position. XVe climbed the next rung of our success ladder and left forever the security of being Juniors for the honor of being Seniors! In September of our senior year, we took over the school with a proprietary Zl1I'. This year the group of class otiicers remained unaltered, but we added both .loan Petrlllo and Robert Hamblet to Student Council. The year seems to have passed without our realizing it. First, we welcomed the new sophomores at the Sophomore Reception, at which everyone was was startled by a black-out. The crowd was calmly mail- aged, however, by Philip llamford, to whom we owe our thanks. Then, as the year book cmmittee began its tremendous task, the class voted that Loring Studio be engaged to take all the pictures. It was not long before members of the class began to think of more serious problems. Individuals sought guidance from the faculty in re- gard to the future. In two of the numerous elections which filled the year, we chose Philip Bamford to represent us at Good Government Day in Boston, and Joan Petrillo to receive the Good Citizenship Medal. And in this, our last year of high school, as in all others, our class- mates earned our respect lll their excellent display ot sportsmanship on. football, baseball, basketball, track, and golf teams. For the remainder of the year, the Talent Night, Military Ball, Girls' A.A. and much anticipated, beautiful Senior Prom all passed smoothly. VVe hold the distinction of being the last class to graduate from Searles High School, and as we look back upon our three years here, we regard them as a brief, but happy interlude, crowded with recollections to be forever cherished. Ercole Sideri, with his campaign manager, Ken XYilson. Georgiana: It was necessary to assign military escorts to both candi- dates. Clinton Hoffman, Steve Young, Dick Kelleher and .lack Donovan are serving as guards. David: They've all been doing an enviable job. Have you seen any celebrities here at the convention? Patricia Derochers, the world-famous pop singer, and Marilyn Clark, who is touring the country doing concerts. are among the crowd. Georgiana: Isn't that Marlene Thornton, the noted authority on Japan, with her personal secretary, Harriet Paris, over there? I David: Yes, and there's the newly-appointed Justice of the Supreme Court, Calvin Downs. I understand Gerry Lucehesi, Shirley Simonian and Joan Higton are working in the .Iustice Department, also. Georgiana: That's what I read in the Methuen Times. Have you seen a recent copy? Toby Gaunt has made quite a name for himself as the editor-in-chief. Barbara Moore is the fashion consultant. Around the Town is a popular column with .Ioan Jukins' by-line. Gayle XVhite, the society editor, interviewed the participants of the Teacher of the Year contest. Among those entered are Nancy Espinola, who is the head of the English department at Central lligh School. Grace Ataide, well known for her theories on teaching children, .Ioan Miele, the foremost authority in the country on the effects of acids and bases, Beatrice Dil,avore, wide- ly known for her interpretations of modern jazz, and .lane Bistany, who has just written a book entitled The Importance of Island Gestures in Public Speaking. David: The paper has certainly been making great strides. Its ace reporters, Dave XVeinhold and Leo Potvin, are here covering the conven- tion. Dave was telling me about last Saturday's game. Coach XYeepy Bamford's best player, Dick Stabile, was hurt, and the team hasn't won a game this season. The noted woman lawyer, Bertha YVein- hold, was trying to get a call into the ottice of the Methuen General Hos- pital.
