The game was scoreless the first quarter and a half before a Searcy fumble deep in Lakeside territory halted a drive that the Rams’ defense apparently couldn’t do. The Searcy defense slammed the door on Lakeside after the fumble and forced a punt which Tim Webb booted dead on the Lion three. However, there was one big difference in the two scores. White Halls conversion attempt was successful while Searcy’s was blocked and the net result was a 7-6 victory by the Bulldogs. It marked the second straight game that opponents have failed to attempt a pass against the Lions. “As we graded the film we saw tremendous improvement in our line work, both offensively and de- fensively and this is what we were looking for and knew we had to have,” said coach Alan Stoll. Searcy collected its touchdown on an 80 yard drive that began early in the fourth period. LaFantasie and Cramblett teamed for a first down at the 33. After losing four, McCulloch passed to sophomore Tim Jimmerson for eight and then to Sterling for 18 and a first down at the Pioneers 45. Two running plays (for a com- bined one yard) left the Lions with fourth down and a short four yards to go at the Yellowjackets eight. From there McCulloch dropped hack and watched his flanker Steve Sterling turn a defender in, then break sharply to the outside. McCulloch hit him perfectly and the Lions had six after only 3:35 had gone by. McCulloch thrilled the crowd by clearing the goal post with a good 10 yards to spare. The Lions were fighting to protect an 18-14 lead late in the last quarter when linebacker Keith Wehh picked off a Steve Elliott pass at the Cabot 27 and returned it all the way for a touchdown that iced the victory for Searcy. Webb, a back-up tailback on offense, displayed some of his hall- carrying prowess on the runback when he stepped around a pro- spective tackier near the sidelines and cut hack to the inside to reach paydirt. This year Butch finished as botli the leading scorer and rebounder in Region 6AA. He tied the school scoring record with 43 points against Sheridan, and scored over 30 several times. He became the second player in recent years to score over 1000 points in his career. What makes Gardner s total so significant, though, is that he only scored 61 points as a sophomore. Starting its season with a triangular meet with Batesville anti Newport, Searcy ran on to win with a wide margin. Next up was a quadrangular meet in which the Lions also won easily. In the following three meets, the Lions faced a host of injuries and finished last in all three. With many of the Lions coming hack to the team, they went on to win their next quadrangular meet. As the Jacksonville Relays rolled around, Searcy entered only three events. One was Jerry Hogan in the 120 High Hurdles. It was here that Hogan broke the school record with a fast time of 14.4. Next on the list was the Bison Relays. Even though the Lions did not come in first, they did put on a good show. Their strength was then shown in a triangular meet with Batesville and Newport. The Lions finished with a 45 point margin. Four of the Lions’ toughest meets came next: the Wildcat Relays, the N.E.A. Relays, the McClellan Relays, and Batesville Relays; Searcy again showed its strength but not quite enough to beat some of the larger schools in the state. In the last three regular season meets, the Lions won a triangular meet between Batesville and Newport, lost to Conway in the Wampus Cat Relays, and came on to win the Key Club Relays. Then came the Region 6AA meet. Again displaying tough depth, the Lions won, wrapping up their season except for the state meet. Having only nine events to qualify for the state, erased any hope of winning the meet, but the Lions made a strong showing. Thanks to a lot of hard work, the 1972 Lions left behind them an excellent season record. Bacon and Coleman headed up the lineup for the doubles. They, too, won their first match, but lost their second. Tin Lions ended up to bring home fourth place in the State AA Tennis Meet. A Message of Love And we pray that Christ will he more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in Him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of Cod's marvelous love; and may you he able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high His love really is; and to experience this love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully know or understand it. And so at last you will he filled up with God himself. Now glory he to God who by His mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts or hopes.
