Sponsor Tommy Jackson Steve Minner i Foreword As you look through this, the 1969-70 Lion may you remem- ber the fun and good times we have had during the current school year. This book will serve as a reminder of the many unforget- able hours spent in the classrooms, on the athletic field, and in the halls from day to day. Keep it, and cherish these memories always. With these memories in mind, we, the yearbook staff, have tried to recapture the pleasures in Searcy High School, and we hope that in years to come, this book will also enable you to recapture them. 2 Table of Contents Introduction 6 Administration 17-28 Classes 29-78 Seniors 29 Juniors 31 Sophomores 63 Features 79-96 Lion Beauty 80 Homecoming 86 Mr. and Miss SHS 94 Outstanding Students 96 Sports 97-142 Football 97 Basketball 113 Cross Country and Track 127 Golf and Tennis 137 Organizations 143 Fine Arts 171 Closing 183 Advertisements 193 de Maurier We compete and though a score may deny it, we never lose - for we have pocketed just one more experience that will help us grow. From contemplation one may become wise, but knowledge comes only from study. 6 7 Our tarnished individuality seeks light in a place of seclusion. A precious moment is snatched and we are alone with our thoughts. . . 8 Through our good times and our Struggle for depth, we are lonely Oneday . . . Somewhere . . . Somehow . . . We met and we knew. 9 Dwelling in the comer of our hearts are the refreshing moments of high school days. These are the ones that we memorize and relive again and again and again. The band plays a vital role in securing prestige for the school in the music field while playing a major role in boosting school spirit. Any band is only as good as its leader and Searcy has the best. Jan Shaw has directed the Searcy High School Band to superior ratings in the region contests as well as the State Band contests and various marching contests. His dedication, knowledge in his field, and personality have contributed to the fact that he is a favorite with his students. We, the 1970 Annual Staff, wish to express our appreciation for a job well done by dedicating the 1970 LION to Mr. Jan Shaw. 15 oard of Directors -L I r :.LJ 16 r| — v Ruben Adams, Harrell Greer, Alvin Van Hook, James Ahlf, Weldon Hudgins (not pictured) Phil Pyeatt. Searcy is indeed privileged to have Mr. James W. Ahlf as its superinten- dent of Schools. He has devoted many years in service to Searcy schools; first as Coach. Physical Education, and Science teacher; and then in 1953, he became Superintendent of the Searcy Public Schools. Because of his great devotion and hard work, Searcy is fortunate to have Mr. Ahlf head its school system. 19 We at Searcy High School feel grateful to have a principal such as Mr. Fletcher Sullards in our school system. He encourages students toward ex- cellence of achievements in not only sports, but in scholastic work and character as well. Mr. Sullards has shown interest in his students by attending athletic events and other extra-curricular activities. He has been a great influence to both students and teachers. Remember our sophomore year when we were the underclassmen. and when we were so scared that we dared not to speak to seniors ... Unforgettable are the long hours spent practicing for the Jr. Revue, decorating for the Jr.-Sr. Banquet, and finally picking out our senior rings ... Now before we know it we will be experiencing the climax of twelve years' work - graduation. We will receive final instructions, final rewards, and final good-byes - the end and the beginning. And now we look to the future with a small part of the reward of education - not just facts, but ideas and ideals, and perhaps for some of us, a little wisdom. BYRON T. The Nature of Youth 50 Juniors V-I-C-T-O-R-Y, that's the Junior battle cry! With the cry of the class yell, the juniors began another year at SHS. Although the newness of being in senior high was gone, the thrill was still with them as they gained habits which were, only a year ago, new ex- periences in a strange school. The junior class donates much of their time in planning the Jr. Revue and the Jr.-Sr. Banquet, which add much meaning to the sen iors' last days. The grand finale comes when they watch the senior graduation ceremonies, and when they begin to anticipate their last year in high school when they will finally be seniors. Sophomores arrived into a school much different than the school they left behind. At last, they were in on things they had watched older sisters and brothers do in the past. It was a year of ballgames with added meaning, extra midnight oil burning, and for the girls, at least one crush on a senior boy. But above all, it was a year in which they had the chance to grow mentally, socially, and emotionally. JERRY SWINDLE President ROBERT HOLEYFIELD V. For the Searcy Lions, the 1969-70 season was the winningest basketball season ever seen by the Searcy High School fans. When the Lions stepped on the court, past records bowed out to the performances of the starting five. Both the Conway Holiday Tournament and the Jonesboro N.E.A. Tournament were tucked away under the Lions' belt during the regular season. A 63 to 48 defeat of Guy gave Searcy the Conway meet. The Lions then went on to Jonesboro where they brought home another tournament championship when they defeated Forest City 56 to 46. The Lions' strength overcame all conference opposition. A perfect conference record of 8 and 0 as- sured the Lions at least three trophies. A powerful starting five and great back-up players enabled Searcy to score a season high of 98 points in a single game. The backboard strength of the Lions led by Lonnie Webber produced a season high of 63 rebounds in one game. The Lions surpassed the 1959 record of winning 26 games in a season when they defeated Pine Bluff Southeast 77 to 55. Even though the Lions played as a team, outstanding individual performances were recorded. Jerry Moon sank 28 points against Horace Mann. Phil Talkington contributed 21 points to the cause in the Jonesboro Tournament. Ron Allison scored 19 points in both the Conway and Paragould games. Allison also held the season high for assists with 14 against Jonesboro Westside. Sam Bradley scored 34 points against Benton with a big field goal percentage. Webber brought down 27 rebounds against Wynne. The individual school scoring record fell when Webber scored 43 points in the Russelville game. The 1969-70 season ended Coach Birdie Rogers' third year with the Lions. Coach Rog- ers, a former Arkansas College star, has compiled a . 834 winning percentage at Searcy. Coach Bob Maddox served as the B team coach and assistant to Coach Rogers. Coach Mad- dox, who held the 1959 Searcy High scoring record, graduated from S.C.A. in Conway. The Road- runners also put the State AAU High School championship under their belt for the second consecutive year. The Roadrunners placed fourth in the first major meet of the year, the Searcj Cross Country Invitational. Running strong, the Roadrunners captured first place honors at the Kennett, Missouri Invitational. They brought back five trophies and twelve ribbons. In keeping with their winning tradition, the Roadrunners once again outran all competition in the State AA meet to win 29 to 41 over second place Russellville. Webster defines a roadrunner as a ground cuckoo that inhabits open regions of south- western North America and runs with great swiftness. Some people think a Searcy ROAD- RUNNER is a little cuckoo for running cross country. A Searcy ROADRUNNER runs throughout the regions of the south- western North America and WINS with great swiftness. This year's team adopts the roadrunner as the official mascot for the cross country team. TRI-CAPTAINS: Kerry Adkins, Sam Bradley, Bobby Hankins.
