The man to whom the annual staff dedi- cates the 1969 Lion is just such a person. Always showing enthusiasm and interest in the individual as well as the school, he has stood by us with ad- vice, encouragement, and devotion. A willing listener, he is available at any time to solve a problem or help with an important decision. It is to you. Coach Bob Jackson, that we extend our love and devotion through the dedication of this Lion. Mr. ‘James Mlf SUPERINTENDENT The job of a superintendent is a challeng- ing one. Not only must he handle the ad- ministrative duties efficiently and promote understanding among faculty, students, and parents, but he should also inspire those about him to attack their duties with great enthusiasm. Such an administrator is Mr. James Ahlf, whose strength and conviction have brought excellence to the Searcy School System. PRINCIPAL The ability to meet the problems and demands of a large student body with ease and assurance comes only with untiring energy and determination. Our principal, Mr. Donald Pitts, combines a unique char- acter with spirited interest in youth to meet that challenge. He is one of the first to realize that bettering education is a never- Mf. Donald Pitts ending project. Beard of directors The men chosen to establish school policy are of the highest caliber. Chosen are responsible representatives from all walks of life who receive no reward other than knowledge of a job well done. With the best interest of the school and its students in mind, these men provide the Searcy Schools with quality education. DR. W. A. Yet, with 1969, Luther Hardin has won his sec- ond such award. Having been active in school affairs, sports, and maintaining straight A's throughout his high school years, he has proved himself to be the leader typified by this award. Outstanding Students Cut her Hardin Senior Zany Utk ‘Junior To be truly outstanding, an individual must be a part of the school's activities - not just an onlooker. Junior Tony Uth has become a vital part of many school functions. He serves as vice-president of the Student Council and spends many hours preparing for the next football season. Besides being a good student, Tony participates in all school activities. 88 Zom l arnetl Sophomore The myth of the mindless athlete is quickly being dispelled by students such as Tom Yarnell, the sophomore recipient of this award. Tom maintained a straight A average throughout his first high-school year. He also found time to compete in football and basket- ball, building a firm foundation for the remainder of his high school years. Smith, Epps, and Feltner begin their battle for first place. Coach Jackson holds championship f trophy. 158 The season really started at the annual Searcy Invitational held at the Searcy Country Club. The largest meet of the season saw 17 teams and 130 runners competing for the first-place trophy, but Searcy topped them all by scoring 21 points and easily defeating Little Rock Central, the second- place team, with 90 points. The Lions added two trophies and two medals to their rapidly growing collection at this meet. Besides the team trophy, Jimmy Smith ran a fine race and carried away the trophy for first place. Larry Epps and Sam Bradley received the medals for 2nd and 5th respectively. Searcy won the regional meet for the third straight year with 16 points. Russellville became the number two team in this meet with 48 points. Searcy had four runners in the top five places and carried away five new trophies. Along with the team trophy, these were received by Smith, Epps, Bradley, and Douglas. Most experts had expected Searcy to win their third CC crown at the State meet. The Lions, with elected captain, Edwin Hughes, traveled to major meets throughout Arkansas, winning the Helena Delta Relays (3 trophies, 35 ribbons), the Key Club Lion Relays (1 trophy, 34 ribbons), and the Northeast Arkansas Relays (3 trophies, 30 ribbons). In the Regional meet, the Lions placed 4th out of 17 teams and went on in the state meet to place 6th out of 35 schools.
