Henry, Evans, Neu, Brandon Duncan displays his high- hurdle form in a track meet. Coon was one of the few seniors on the squad and was a real leader. Cumbie finishes the quarter with an excellent time. Mike, perhaps the most versatile man on the team, was very inspirational to the other mem- bers of the team. Che Bistanre Hlen The distance men were mostly sopho- mores and juniors. They exerted maximum effort and were a big help to the team. 104 Senior (Track Walker gets his second wind while running the 880. Every muscle straining. Price gets an excellent start toward winning the relay. Cumbie finishes ahead of the pack in this relay. He made a habit of this throughout the season. Duncan, also extremely ver- satile, takes his turn at the broad jump pit. Randall Hughes and Tommy Christopher, both sophomores, were the two discus men. These men helped our track team by the use of their arms instead of their legs, but a point in this department counts as much as a point in a sprint or a relay. Mike Dunn, with support from Randall Hughes, was the point maker in the shot put category. Mike broke his own record several times and was the only member of the team that went to the state meet. Mike Bunn itanhall Ujuglu'e Bell clears a hurdle in an attempt to gain desperately needed points. Duncan has to take second place to Nokes of Watson Chapel in the hurdles. Dun- can and Nokes were the two better hurdlers in Region 3AA-East. Up and over goes Burney Lightle. Burney came into his own during the season, giving us much needed sup- port. This is one of the many times that Watson Bell cleared the high-jump bar during the season. Watson con- tributed many points to the Searcy cause. The Lions played a near perfect game as they led 50 to 8 at halftime. This was a good opportunity for the substitutes, for they gained valuable experience in playing most of the last half. Richard Neu led all scoring with 25 points. The 1965-66 season was one of the best seasons the Lions have had in recent years. Throughout the season the Lions played good, sound, fundamental basketball. This type basketball proved Searcy to be a top contender for district and state honors. Alternates possessing equal ability was the Lions’ strongest point. When the starting five became injured or did not fulfill their capabilities, there was always someone who could replace them. Searcy was defeated by Paragould in their first game of the season but bounced back with three straight wins. Searcy’s next defeat came when they played Oak Grove at the Mabelvale Invitational Tournament. The Lions began to function as a team both offensively and defensively to win the next six games. This streak included important victories over Conway and Catholic High, top contenders for the region title. Searcy gained a berth in the state tournament by downing archrival Conway in their first game in the Region 3AA Tournament at Morrilton. In their second game the Lions easily defeated the Fuller Panthers to advance to the finals, gaining a chance to meet Catholic High, the tourney favor- ite. The Lions came through with one of their best efforts of the year and upset the Rockets by the stunning score of 56-42. The Lions entered the AA State Tournament with an impressive 19-5 record. In the first round game Searcy and Valley Springs hooked up in a real defensive battle with the Lions becoming vic- torious in the final minute. In the quarter-finals the Lions, playing with a big height disadvantage, turned in a tremendous performance and defeated Warren 58-43. This victory enabled the Lions to advance to the semifinals, farther than any other Searcy team had previously gone. After the Warren game the scrappy Lions, termed the “Cinderella” team of the tournament, met the powerful Harrison Goblins. The undefeated and number one team in the state had the Lions outmanned but our boys put up a game battle before falling in the fourth quarter. The Rockets didn’t get hot and the Lions didn’t get cold. The end result was a Searcy, 65-42 Region 3AA Western division victory here Tuesday night. Searcy sneaked out in front of the cold Catholics, 19-11, at the end of the initial quarter. The Lions held a 31-22 halftime advantage. Searcy outscored the Rockets, 18-13, in the third period and 16-7 in the fourth quarter as it sailed away with the win. After trailing Searcy by 16-12, the Rockets used fine shooting and rugged rebounding to deal the Lions their first conference loss. A three week lay-off was a factor in this loss. The Lions could not seem to find the basket consistently after the first quarter, and a number of floor mistakes proved costly. This district is regarded as the toughest AA league in the state. The first game against Benton proved to be a disappointing loss. Following this loss the Lions came back against Cabot and shutout the Panthers. In the next game the Lions played their traditional rival, Conway. Searcy put on one of their best performances of the season, but Conway capitalized on a couple of big breaks and won by two touchdowns. The next two weeks the Lions played two fine games beating Watson Chapel and Morrilton in shutouts. With injuries mounting the Lions could not find the winning combination and lost the next five games. The next week the Lions got back in the winning column with a win over Sylvan Hills in a close game. In the last game of the season the Lions played Catholic High, ranked number six in the state, and lost. The final season record was 4 wins, 8 losses. The conference record was 1 win, 4 losses. Due to key injuries the Lions were unable to start the same eleven for every game. All during the year the squad had fine leadership from the two co-captains, Greg Wall- ace and James Slayton. Late summer days mark the beginning of much hard work for the band. Under the capable direction of Mr. Jan Shaw, the band drills many hours to perfect the formations that delight football fans. With hard work and the cooperation of all the members, the band puts on a spectacular show. During concert season the band puts on many concerts that delight the listener. This year the band had the privilege to perform on television, which really thrilled every member. The band works even harder to give an excellent performance on stage. Many hours of practice are needed to be able to perform a concert. Every member must do his part.
