Towering, immense, forbidding Searcy High looms above the sen- iors, who hesitate a moment, solitary and uncertain. The School Develops the Challenge in Varied Ways To Learn Great men are they who see that spiritual is stronger than any material force - that throughts rule the world. - Ralph Waldo Emerson To Grow: To Think: We Strive to Work and to Accept Responsibility . . . Finally, We Aim to Widen Our Horizons, To Gain True Maturity The School Is U) Understand 'Odrselves Relation to God and.Man . V . ' Challenges Us to Develop Our Minds The Challenge to the Mind The chief dignity of man is Thought. These words of Pascal highlight the challenge to the mind. It is a challenge of ceaseless work, and it is a chal- lenge which often remains unrealized. High school years are, however, the time of first perception, when the student begins to search into art, mathe- matics. or the social sciences. They are the years when a person first senses his mind and its abilities and sees the awesome challenge to the mind. New courses, new books, new teachers, new ideas - a burst of enthusiasm is the keynote of early autumn. After classes students stop to relax and talk. We have tried to depict the life of Searcy High School on these pages, through the art work we have presented scenes which typify our school life. The accomplishments of our faculty and student body in all aspects of school life have been reached through united effort. We of the staff wish to acknowledge the achievements of one individual, Mr. Carl Steward, who deserves equal credit for his fine work. We are grateful for the high standards that he has set for our youth of today. The ’65 Lion Staff joins together to say Thanks for a job well done.” MR. JAMES AHLF Superintendent Our Genial Superintendent Challenges Us To Mature The first test of a leader is that he can wisely guide and counsel his followers to meet life with conviction and the will to carry on. One man with this ability is the superintendent of Searcy, Mr. James Ahlf. Not only does he handle the administrative duties efficiently and promote understand- ing among faculty, students, and parents, but he also inspires everyone around him to attack his duties with great enthusiasm. A leader such as Mr. Ahlf meets matters rang- ing from classroom problems to extracurricu- lar activities with strength and daring. Un- daunted by conferences, meetings, reports, and endless school problems, he faces daily affairs cheerfully and wisely. MR. LEE YARBROUGH Principal Many Detailed Tasks Keep Mr. Yarbrough Busy. Mr. Yarbrough, our versatile principal, meets the problems and demands of a large student body with the ease and assurance of an expert. He takes care of many behind-the-scene duties with interest and enthusiasm. Mr. Yarbrough has these areas of responsibility: organizing and maintaining records of pupils; organizing the program of instruction; super- vising those responsible for instruction; organizing stu- dent activity programs; maintaining public relations programs; and other duties of equal importance. A principal’s duties involve most of all the important parts of the educational process. He has been and is concerned with pupils, learning materials, and teach- ing methods. Because of these many responsibilities, Mr. Yarbrough rarely finds time, except during the summer vacation, to pursue his hobbies of fishing, reading, and golf. 17 The 1965 Board of Directors J. B. DAVIS WEBB World History, Government Faculty Teachers Help Us to Develop Understanding The extremely difficult task of instilling in young minds a knowledge of the world and a curiosity about it presents a huge challenge to every teacher. His ingenuity and resourcefulness are called upon at all times of the day to make difficult ideas more un- derstandable. To accomplish this gigantic task, he makes use of the facilities given him - colorfully il- lustrated textbooks, maps, charts, and films. To stimulate curiosity, he phrases statements and ques- tions so that other questions will arise in students’ minds. To encourage pupils to enlarge upon their classroom activities, he explains, defines, and adds details to basic textbook content. Again and again he must discover new ways of presenting his material. His resourcefulness encompasses all of a teacher’s ed- ucation. Emulating Plato's statement, those having torches will pass them on to others, a teacher accepts his duty with willingness, courage, and patience. MISS RUBY LANGLEY Librarian MRS. MARY KATHRYN JAMES Sophomore English and World History MR. CARL STEWARD Biology, Government, Problems of Democracy and Geography, Yearboo Advisor Our Teachers Have Important Responsibilities Each new school day brings various responsi- bilities to the teacher. He must spend the day not only instructing his students, but he must in his spare time, make out report cards, grade sheets, attendance records, and take care of study halls. A teacher, of course, is willing to aid in the func- tioning of our school, but many times he wishes that he could devote his full time and energy to the sub- ject he teaches. MR. CECIL MORGAN MRS. The challenge is even greater for the untried teacher who has just finished college. Through an initiation party in September, the new teacher is made to feel welcome. After this infor- mal gathering, the new teacher soon feels at ease with faculty and students in his position at Searcy. High. MR. OWETA HUMPHREY Typing, Shorthand, and Bookkeeping The joy in watching children learn, the delight in sharing what one knows, the satisfaction of creating a feeling of unity among diverse members of a class - these are the rewards of teaching. Though a teacher confronts many obstacles and burdens, he forgets about these when he sees students progressing under his guidance. He knows that the understanding they gain may give students a more intelligent approach to life and open new horizons for them to pursue. The sparkling eyes, radiant smiles, and eager questions of those who have suddenly grasped a truth stimulate a teacher to do his best. Altruistic by nature, he seeks only to share with others, to give of himself completely, so that his stu- dents can experience the same joy in learning which he has known. 22 MRS. CHARLOTTE MORGAN MR. DON PITTS MISS RACHEL GREER Home Economics Health, Drivers Education, Basketball Physical Education Coach Teachers Display Versatility in Their Classes Members of the Searcy High faculty teach a wide variety of sub- jects in many fields. With an excellent educational background in both a major and a minor field, they have prepared themselves to teach more than one subject. Coaches and physical education teachers also instruct health classes; and teachers of academic subjects often combine fields, such as English and a foreign language or math and science. Besides dis- playing their versatility, our teachers continually strive to increase their present knowledge by making use of summer vacations for travel and study. MRS. MARY PITNER Guidance, Occupations MR. JAN SHAW Band Director Dianna Stroup finds hunting insects educational and interesting. 23 Our Administrative Assistants Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Langford, and Mrs. Hardin fill important functions in the efficient operation of Searcy High School. They have many functions which are very necessary in their respective jobs. Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Langford handle the secre- tarial duties that are administered by the school superintendent. These duties con- sist of school finance reports, faculty, bul- letin, monthly school reports, writing of checks, publishing the school calendar, etc. Mrs. Hardin takes care of making school reports, taking up school fees, phone service, and also serves as Mr. Yarbrough's right-hand man. Mrs. Hardin's cheerful personality has made her popular with the students and teachers because she is always ready to help them in any way she can. We at Searcy High School are fortunate to have the services of our secretaries. Work, work, work is the motto of our three smiling office secre- taries, Mrs. Hardin, Mrs. Langford, and Mrs. Jackson. MRS. CHRYSTAL HARDIN Secretary to the Principal MRS. LERLEEN JACKSON Secretary to the Superintendent MRS. MARY LANGFORD Receptionist MR. BELCHER Lunchroom Supervisor Cafeteria and Staff Serve Many Hungry Students The cooks do an outstanding job each year in contributing to the healthful surroundings of our school. Their prime duties are to maintain high health standards, a pleasing atmosphere, and provide cafeteria services to our student body. The cafeteria staff, headed by Mr. Belcher, prepare well-balanced and nutritional diets for the students. The cafeteria functions smoothly because of the outstand- ing and hard work of the people in the department. Mr. Yearby and Mr. Ahlf are discussing the area that the S.H.S. school district covers from our transportation chart. The Challenge of Adequate School Transportation Continually Faces Mr. Yearby. Following are the different routes which the bus drivers make every day: Siden, Picken's Chapel, Higginson, Bald Knob, Ken- sett, Judsonia, Four Mile Hill, Hy. 16, Center Hill, Harmony, Gum Springs, Hy. 67, Sunny Hill, Pump- ing Station, Blue Community, Cloverdale, and Rose Bud. Mr. Robert Lawson, building and ground superintendent, supervises the care for build- ings and grounds. Six custodians assist him in his work. During school they sweep rooms, plant and water shrubs, repair school desks, maintain the proper temperature for the rooms and in general make the school more comfortable for the students. During vaca- tion holidays they wax floors, wash windows, and give the school a thorough cleaning. Their job is one of dedication and service to the school and students. Mr. Lawson gives special instructions for mowing Lion Stadium. Good machinery costs money, but only the best is used for Searcy High School. 29 T Mowing Lion's Stadium is one of the many jobs Mr. Lawson and his helpers undertake. BILL BUCHANAN Senior Class, V. Under the capable direction of Mr. Shaw, the band draws detailed plans for the formations that delight foot- ball fans, and then begins tedious hours of drill. Fol- lowing the hours of planning and drilling there is a time of uneasiness and tension for the whole band. However, when the night of the show arrives and everything takes place as planned, the band members wonder why they worried. Hard work, drill, and planning are the key words to each band member. They are the words that bring first frowns of worry and then smiles of satisfaction to faces in the Searcy High Marching Band. W. Austin - Head Coach and Athletic Director Regional 3AA — Runners Up East Division This was the first year under a new coaching staff com- posed of J. W. Austin, Johnny Simmons, and James Heath. After the long, hard summer practices, the members of the team felt that they were ready for the opening game with Benton. The first game was a disappointment in that we lost, but the Lions played a game with few mistakes to show that they were going to be tough during the year. The next week proved this, due to the fact that we thoroughly romped over Cabot. After the Cabot game came the clash with arch rival Conway. Conway was a heavy favorite, but Searcy came through with the best defensive game of the year. Searcy held Conway to a touchdown made in the third quarter and nearly upset the Wampus Cats. After this terrific game the Lions played Sheridan for the conference cham- pionship. The size, speed, experience, and the benefit of their home field were the deciding factors in the game. After losing the game to Sheridan, the Lions won one of the remaining six games. Although the record, 5 wins and 7 losses, was unimpressive according to the won and loss col- umn, the Lions ended up with a conference record of 4-1 and second place in the Region 3AA-East. During the year there was inspired leadership from the captains, Montie Duncan, Kenneth Stracener and seniors. The leadership, desire and the coaching was the difference in winning and losing games. Although the teams played a good game the Benton Panthers proved to be superior. Outstanding performances for Benton were given by fullback Glen Hockersmith, and quarterback R. E. Hodges. For Searcy Larry James and Jimmy Jackson were standouts. Searcy 38 Cabot 0 Getting a big offensive night from fullback Jimmy Jackson, the Searcy Lions romped over Cabot's Panthers for their first Conference win of the year. Jackson dominated the offensive statistics in scoring three touchdowns. Defensive standouts were Kenneth Stracener, Robert Edwards, and David Fletcher. Searcy 0 Conway 7 The Searcy Lions came within a hair of pulling what would have been the upset of the year in Arkansas high school.football. The Lions held the Conway Wampus Cats, Arkansas' number one high school team, to a 0-0 stand off at the half, before bowing 7-0 on a third quarter touchdown by J. B. Pendergraft. Conway held a big edge statistic wise, but the Lions proved that heart and desire still have a place in football. f _( MONTIE DUNCAN Sr. Co-Capt. KENNETH STRACENER Sr. Co-Capt. Dwight Woosley picks up good yardage up die middle against Sylvan Hills. 149 HEAD BASKETBALL COACH Don Pitts 3AA-East Basketball 1964-1965 Basketball The basketball team of 1965 was very inexperienced. Sophomores, juniors, and two seniors composed the team. The Lions were a small team and the players had to fight extra hard against the bigger teams. The point makers for the year were James and Henry. Jackson, Hays, and Neu accounted for most of the re- bounds with assistance from sophomores, Griffin, Fowlkes, and Baker. During the year the team gained composure and played some excellent ball despite the size and experience factors. The season's record was 16 wins and 11 losses. MGR.
